Fashion
Fashion is a popular style or practice, especially in clothing, footwear, accessories, makeup, body or furniture. Fashion is a distinctive and often habitual trend in the style in which a person dresses. It is the prevailing styles in behaviour and the newest creations of textile designers. Because the more technical term costume is regularly linked to the term "fashion", the use of the former has been relegated to special senses like fancy dress or masquerade wear, while "fashion" generally means clothing, including the study of it. Although aspects of fashion can be feminine or masculine, some trends are androgynous.
Clothing fashions
Early Western travelers, whether to Persia, Turkey, India, China, would frequently remark on the absence of change in fashion there. The Japanese Shogun's secretary bragged (not completely accurately) to a Spanish visitor in 1609 that Japanese clothing had not changed in over a thousand years. However, there is considerable evidence in Ming China of rapidly changing fashions in Chinese clothing. Changes in costume often took place at times of economic or social change, as occurred in ancient Rome and the medieval Caliphate, followed by a long period without major changes. In 8th-century Moorish Spain, the musician Ziryab introduced to Córdobasophisticated clothing-styles based on seasonal and daily fashions from his native Baghdad, modified by his own inspiration. Similar changes in fashion occurred in the 11th century in the Middle East following the arrival of the Turks, who introduced clothing styles from Central Asia and the Far East.

Confessions of a Shopaholic (film)
Confessions of a Shopaholic is a 2009 American romantic comedy film based on the Shopaholic series of novels by Sophie Kinsella. Directed by P. J. Hogan, the film stars Isla Fisher as the shopaholic journalist and Hugh Dancy as her boss.
Plot
Rebecca Bloomwood (Isla Fisher) is a shopping addict who lives with her best friend Suze (Krysten Ritter). She works as a journalist for a gardening magazine but dreams of joining the fashion magazine Alette. On the way to an interview with Alette, she buys a green scarf. Her credit card is declined, so Rebecca goes to a hot dog stand and offers to buy all the hot dogs with a check, if the seller gives her back change in cash, saying the scarf is to be a gift for her sick aunt. The hot dog vendor refuses but a man offers her $20.
When Rebecca arrives at the interview, she's told that the position has been filled. However, the receptionist tells her there is an open position with the magazine Successful Savings, explaining that getting a job at Successful Savings could eventually lead to a position at Alette magazine. Rebecca interviews with Luke Brandon (Hugh Dancy), the editor of Successful Savings and the man who just gave her the $20. She hides her scarf outside his office, but Luke's assistant comes into the office and gives it back to her. Rebecca knows the game is up and leaves.

Abstract: Regular expressions are commonly used for finding and extracting matches from sequence data. Due to the inherent ambiguity of regular expressions, a disambiguation policy must be considered for the match extraction problem, in order to uniquely determine the desired match out of the possibly many matches. The most common disambiguation policies are the POSIX policy and the greedy (PCRE) policy. The POSIX policy chooses the longest match out of the leftmost ones. The greedy policy chooses a leftmost match and further disambiguates using a greedy interpretation of Kleene iteration to match as many times as possible. The choice of disambiguation policy can affect the output of match extraction, which can be an issue for reusing regular expressions across regex engines. In this paper, we introduce and study the notion of disambiguation robustness for regular expressions. A regular expression is robust if its extraction semantics is indifferent to whether the POSIX or greedy disambiguation policy is chosen. This gives rise to a decision problem for regular expressions, which we prove to be PSPACE-complete. We propose a static analysis algorithm for checking the (non-)robustness of regular expressions and two performance optimizations. We have implemented the proposed algorithms and we have shown experimentally that they are practical for analyzing large datasets of regular expressions derived from various application domains.

Named Entity Disambiguation (NED) is the task of mapping textual mentions to entities in a database. A key challenge in NED is generalizing to rarely seen entities, termed tail entities. Traditional NED systems use hand-tuned features to improve tail generalization, but these features make the system challenging to deploy and maintain. In 2018, a subset of the authors built and deployed a self-supervised NED system at a major technology company, which improved performance over its hand-tuned predecessor. Motivated to understand the core reasons for this improvement, we introduce Bootleg, a clean-slate, open-source, self-supervised NED system. In this talk, we'll show how to succeed on the tail by reasoning over structured data. We demonstrate that Bootleg matches or exceeds state-of-the-art performance on three NED benchmarks and that the learned representations from Bootleg demonstrate up to 8% performance lift in a production task. Finally, we observe that embeddings from self-supervised models like Bootleg are increasingly being served to downstream applications, creating an embedding ecosystem. We initiate the study of the data management challenges associated with this ecosystem.

There are some fab fashion trends heading our way next year and there are some that are definitely worth knowing about. Some are a little unexpected, others are even a tad controversial and some are not surprising at all. I wanted to share them early though because I'm not only excited about them but I do think it's helpful getting a jump start on the trends and what is heading our way next year. Fashion
Fashion is a popular style or practice, especially in clothing, footwear, accessories, makeup, body or furniture. Fashion is a distinctive and often habitual trend in the style in which a person dresses. It is the prevailing styles in behaviour and the newest creations of textile designers. Because the more technical term costume is regularly linked to the term "fashion", the use of the former has been relegated to special senses like fancy dress or masquerade wear, while "fashion" generally means clothing, including the study of it. Although aspects of fashion can be feminine or masculine, some trends are androgynous.
Clothing fashions
Early Western travelers, whether to Persia, Turkey, India, China, would frequently remark on the absence of change in fashion there. The Japanese Shogun's secretary bragged (not completely accurately) to a Spanish visitor in 1609 that Japanese clothing had not changed in over a thousand years. However, there is considerable evidence in Ming China of rapidly changing fashions in Chinese clothing. Changes in costume often took place at times of economic or social change, as occurred in ancient Rome and the medieval Caliphate, followed by a long period without major changes. In 8th-century Moorish Spain, the musician Ziryab introduced to Córdobasophisticated clothing-styles based on seasonal and daily fashions from his native Baghdad, modified by his own inspiration. Similar changes in fashion occurred in the 11th century in the Middle East following the arrival of the Turks, who introduced clothing styles from Central Asia and the Far East.

MOVIE: Confessions of a Shopaholic (2009)
PLOT: Struggling with her debilitating obsession with shopping and the sudden collapse of her income source, Rebecca Bloomwood (Isla Fisher) unintentionally lands a job writing for a financial magazine after a drunken letter-mailing mix-up. Ironically writing about the consumer caution of she hasn't heeded, Rebecca's innovative comparisons and unconventional metaphors for economics grant her critical acclaim, public success, and the admiration of her supportive boss Luke Brandon (Hugh Dancy). But as she draws closer to her ultimate goal of writing for renowned fashion magazine Alette, she questions her true ambitions and must determine if overcoming her "shopaholic" condition will bring her real happiness.

Abstract: Regular expressions are commonly used for finding and extracting matches from sequence data. Due to the inherent ambiguity of regular expressions, a disambiguation policy must be considered for the match extraction problem, in order to uniquely determine the desired match out of the possibly many matches. The most common disambiguation policies are the POSIX policy and the greedy (PCRE) policy. The POSIX policy chooses the longest match out of the leftmost ones. The greedy policy chooses a leftmost match and further disambiguates using a greedy interpretation of Kleene iteration to match as many times as possible. The choice of disambiguation policy can affect the output of match extraction, which can be an issue for reusing regular expressions across regex engines. In this paper, we introduce and study the notion of disambiguation robustness for regular expressions. A regular expression is robust if its extraction semantics is indifferent to whether the POSIX or greedy disambiguation policy is chosen. This gives rise to a decision problem for regular expressions, which we prove to be PSPACE-complete. We propose a static analysis algorithm for checking the (non-)robustness of regular expressions and two performance optimizations. We have implemented the proposed algorithms and we have shown experimentally that they are practical for analyzing large datasets of regular expressions derived from various application domains.

Abstract:
Named Entity Disambiguation (NED) is the task of mapping textual mentions to entities in a database. A key challenge in NED is generalizing to rarely seen entities, termed tail entities. Traditional NED systems use hand-tuned features to improve tail generalization, but these features make the system challenging to deploy and maintain. In 2018, a subset of the authors built and deployed a self-supervised NED system at a major technology company, which improved performance over its hand-tuned predecessor. Motivated to understand the core reasons for this improvement, we introduce Bootleg, a clean-slate, open-source, self-supervised NED system. In this talk, we'll show how to succeed on the tail by reasoning over structured data. We demonstrate that Bootleg matches or exceeds state-of-the-art performance on three NED benchmarks and that the learned representations from Bootleg demonstrate up to 8% performance lift in a production task. Finally, we observe that embeddings from self-supervised models like Bootleg are increasingly being served to downstream applications, creating an embedding ecosystem. We initiate the study of the data management challenges associated with this ecosystem.

Abstract:
Programming by Examples (PBE) has the potential to revolutionize end-user programming by \ enabling end users, most of whom are non-programmers, to create small scripts for automating \ repetitive tasks. \ However, examples, though often easy to provide, are an ambiguous specification of the user's intent. \ Because of that, a key impedance in adoption of PBE systems is the lack of user confidence in the correctness of \ the program that was synthesized by the system. \ We present two novel user interaction models that communicate actionable information to the user to help resolve ambiguity in the examples. \ One of these models allows the user to effectively navigate between the huge set of \ programs that are consistent with the examples provided by the user. \ The other model uses active learning to ask directed example-based questions to the user on the test input data over \ which the user intends to run the synthesized program. \ Our user studies show that \ each of these models significantly reduces the number of errors in the performed task without any difference in completion time. \ Moreover, both models are perceived as useful, \ and the proactive active-learning based model has a slightly higher preference regarding the users' confidence in the result.
