Elian Masaad,
Secretary of the '
National Conference for a Secular
Syria' party and official spokesperson for the
Syrian National Work Committee, spoke at the Hmeymim airbase in
Latakia, Tuesday, during a meeting of the representatives of the opposition parties along with well-known public persons of Syria.
SOT, Elian Masaad, Secretary of the 'National Conference for a Secular Syria' party and official spokesperson for the Syrian National Work Committee (
Arabic): "Fully accepting the terms of the joint statement of the
Russian Federation and the
United States as co-chairs of the
International Syria
Support Group, we are ready to participate in a wide intra-Syrian dialogue under the auspices of the
United Nations in Geneva. We see that a military solution for the
Syrian crisis is impossible and confirm the necessity of a political settlement as outlined in the Vienna-2 and
Resolution 2254 of the
UN Security Council. We declare that we will do everything we can to establish long-awaited
peace in Syria. Terrorists and foreign mercenaries tortured our people.
Hundreds of thousands of civilians died: women, old people, children. The economy of Syria, the country which until recently was prosperous in the region, is destroyed.
The country is on the verge of collapse.
Fighting terrorists from
ISIS,
Jabhat al-Nusra and other militant groups is necessary. The joint statement of the Russian Federation and the United States as co-chairs of the International Syria Support Group to cease hostilities in Syria, which was approved a few days ago gives, perhaps, the last chance to stop the bloodshed of our people and the destruction of the country. The first success of the fragile truce in our land encourages cautious optimism. It is necessary to make this process irreversible. All Syrian patriots have to drop their ambitions, selfish interests and to unite under the only correct slogan: the salvation of the country and the people of Syria. We gathered here today in order to follow this slogan. In this regard we fully accept the terms of the joint statement of the Russian Federation and the United States as the co-chairs of the International Syria Support Group and we are firmly focused on the participation in the wide intra-Syrian dialogue under the auspices of the United Nations in Geneva. Only the efforts of all national patriotic forces, primarily led by our parties, movements and organisations aimed at the launch of the peace process in Syria will create the necessary conditions for national unity and reconciliation. The attempts to isolate a part of the Syrian society, to prepare constitutional documents on the restoration of Syria in the capitals of third countries without taking into account the views of a broad national community are doomed to failure, it can only aggravate the situation in the country and turn the whole process into a political farce. We believe that the main task on the way of political settlement in Syria is to work together on the preparation of a new constitution for the country, which will ensure the existence and prosperity of a strong, democratic, independent and secular Syria, while respecting the rights of every citizen, regardless of his/her ethnic and confessional affiliation. The initiative group was created to develop a new constitution. This group includes representatives of armed groups, religious leaders, representatives of national and ethnic groups living in Syria and those who signed an agreement on ceasefire and cessation of hostilities. We commit ourselves to finalise the draft of a new constitution as soon as possible. We call on all patriotic movements, parties and organisations to join this work and proceed with the restoration of confidence."
