Nauru (/nɑːˈuːruː/ nah-OO-roo or /ˈnɑːruː/ NAHR-oo), officially the Republic of Nauru (Nauruan: Repubrikin Naoero) and formerly known as Pleasant Island, is an island country in Micronesia in the Central Pacific. Its nearest neighbour is Banaba Island in Kiribati, 300 kilometres (186 mi) to the east. With 9,488 residents in a 21-square-kilometre (8.1 sq mi) area, Nauru is the smallest state in the South Pacific and third smallest state by area in the world, behind only Vatican City and Monaco.
Settled by native peoples from Micronesia and Polynesia, Nauru was annexed and claimed as a colony by the German Empire in the late 19th century. After World War I, Nauru became a League of Nations mandate administered by Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. During World War II, Nauru was occupied by Japanese troops, who were bypassed by the Allied advance across the Pacific. After the war ended, the country entered into UN trusteeship. Nauru gained its independence in 1968.
something about it
The 12-hour layover in Australia's Brisbane International Airport is a whiz-bang. I find myself shopping for crystal unicorns and staring at duty-free liquor. Two entire shifts of employees come and go while I down 14 shots of espresso. It's 14 hours from California to Australia, then one more flight to Nauru. Where? Exactly. It's a tiny island nation about 1,800 miles from eastern Australia. It's in the deepest part of the Pacific Ocean, beyond Papua New Guinea, beyond the Solomon Islands. If the world were flat, this might be the last stop before you fell off. Nauru first hit my radar as the last country that CNN iReport waited on to complete its Global Challenge, a race to net an iReport story from every nation on the planet. From the Film Australia Collection. Made by The Commonwealth Film Unit 1962. Directed by Frank Bagnall. Nauru has a long association with Australia. From being a United Nations trust territory administered by Australia to becoming one of the worlds largest sources of phosphate mined by Australian companies to an Australian off-shore detention centre for asylum seekers. Nauru is now the world's smallest republic covering just 21 square kilometres. This film looks at Nauru in 1962 when it had the highest per-capita income in the world but when the depletion of the countries phosphate resources was already on the horizon meaning the only industry they had, and the only source of foreign investment, was coming to an end. Having become accustomed to the ways of the modern, industrialised world...

Once again, Nauru has become a temporary home to hundreds of people seeking a new life in Australia. While the decision to send asylum seekers to the South Pacific island is in dispute locals hope it will provide a lifeline to the country. Nauru is just 21 square kilometres, and has a population of fewer than 10 thousand people. SBS correspondent Jeannette Francis travelled to Nauru to find that many local business owners believe the tiny economy will be revived by the influx of people.
