By summer 1597, Jonson had a fixed engagement in the Admiral's Men, then performing under Philip Henslowe's management at The Rose. John Aubrey reports, on uncertain authority, that Jonson was not successful as an actor; whatever his skills as an actor, he was evidently more valuable to the company as a writer. By this time Jonson had begun to write original plays for the Admiral's Men; in 1598 he was mentioned by Francis Meres in his Palladis Tamia as one of "the best for tragedy." None of his early tragedies survives, however. An undated comedy, The Case is Altered, may be his earliest surviving play. In 1597 a play which he co-wrote with Thomas Nashe, The Isle of Dogs, was suppressed after causing great offence. Arrest warrants for Jonson and Nashe were issued by Queen Elizabeth I's so-called interrogator, Richard Topcliffe. Jonson was jailed in Marshalsea Prison and charged with "Leude and mutynous behavior", while Nashe managed to escape to Great Yarmouth. Two of the actors, Gabriel Spenser and Robert Shaw, were also imprisoned. A year later, Jonson was again briefly imprisoned, this time in Newgate Prison, for killing Gabriel Spenser in a duel on 22 September 1598 in Hogsden Fields (today part of Hoxton). Tried on a charge of manslaughter, Jonson pleaded guilty but was released by benefit of clergy, a legal ploy through which he gained leniency by reciting a brief bible verse (the neck-verse), forfeiting his 'goods and chattels' and being branded on his left thumb. While in gaol Jonson converted to Catholicism, possibly through the influence of fellow-prisoner Father Thomas Wright, a Jesuit priest. In 1598 Jonson produced his first great success, Every Man in His Humour, capitalising on the vogue for humorous plays which George Chapman had begun with An Humorous Day's Mirth. William Shakespeare was among the first actors to be cast. Jonson followed this in 1599 with Every Man out of His Humour, a pedantic attempt to imitate Aristophanes. It is not known whether this was a success on stage, but when published it proved popular and went through several editions. Jonson's other work for the theatre in the last years of Elizabeth I's reign was marked by fighting and controversy. Cynthia's Revels was produced by the Children of the Chapel Royal at Blackfriars Theatre in 1600. It satirised both John Marston, who Jonson believed had accused him of lustfulness, possibly in Histrio-Mastix, and Thomas Dekker. Jonson attacked the two poets again in 1601's Poetaster. Dekker responded with Satiromastix, subtitled "the untrussing of the humorous poet". The final scene of this play, whilst certainly not to be taken at face value as a portrait of Jonson, offers a caricature that is recognisable from Drummond's report -- boasting about himself and condemning other poets, criticising performances of his plays, and calling attention to himself in any available way. This "War of the Theatres" appears to have ended with reconciliation on all sides. Jonson collaborated with Dekker on a pageant welcoming James I to England in 1603 although Drummond reports that Jonson called Dekker a rogue. Marston dedicated The Malcontent to Jonson and the two collaborated with Chapman on Eastward Ho, a 1605 play whose anti-Scottish sentiment briefly landed both authors in jail. A man of vast reading and a seemingly insatiable appetite for controversy, Jonson had an unparalleled breadth of influence on Jacobean and Caroline playwrights and poets. Jonson claimed his family was of Scottish Border country descent, and this claim may have been supported by the fact that his coat of arms bears three spindles or rhombi, a device shared by a Borders family, the Johnstones of Annandale. His father died a month before Ben's birth, and his mother remarried two years later, to a master bricklayer.Jonson attended school in St. Martin's Lane, and was later paid for by a friend to go to Westminster School, where one of his teachers was William Camden. Jonson remained friendly with Camden, whose broad scholarship evidently influenced his own style, until the latter's death in 1623. On leaving, Jonson was once thought to have gone on to the University of Cambridge,but Jonson himself contradicts this, saying that he did not go to university, but was put to a trade, probably bricklaying, immediately: a legend recorded by Thomas Fuller indicates that he worked on a garden wall in Lincoln's Inn. He soon had enough of the trade and spent some time in the Low Countries as a volunteer with the regiments of Francis Vere. In conversations with poet William Drummond of Hawthornden, subsequently published as the Hawthornden Manuscripts, Jonson reports that while in the Netherlands he killed an opponent in single combat and stripped him of his weapons. Jonson married a woman whom he described to Drummond as "a shrew, yet honest." His wife has not been definitively identified, but she is sometimes identified as the Ann Lewis who married a Benjamin Jonson at St Magnus-the-Martyr, near London Bridge. The registers of St. Martin's Church state that his eldest daughter Mary died in November 1593, when she was six months old. His eldest son Benjamin died of the plague ten years later aged seven (Jonson's epitaph to him On My First Sonne was written shortly after), and a second Benjamin died in 1635. Ben Jonson (originally Benjamin Jonson /ˈdʒɒnsən/; c. 11 June 1572 – 6 August 1637) was an English playwright, poet, and literary critic of the seventeenth century, whose artistry exerted a lasting impact upon English poetry and stage comedy. He popularised the comedy of humours. He is best known for the satirical plays Every Man in His Humour (1598), Volpone, or The Foxe (1605), The Alchemist (1610), and Bartholomew Fayre: A Comedy (1614), and for his lyric poetry; he is generally regarded as the second most important English dramatist, after William Shakespeare, during the reign of James I.[1] Jonson was a classically educated, well-read, and cultured man of the English Renaissance with an appetite for controversy (personal and political, artistic and intellectual) whose cultural influence was of unparalleled breadth upon the playwrights and the poets of the Jacobean era (1603–1625) and of the Caroline era (1625–1642).[2][3] Ben Jonson said that his family originally came from the folk of the Anglo-Scottish border country, which genealogy is verified by the three spindles (rhombi) in the Jonson family coat of arms. One spindle is a diamond-shaped heraldic device shared with the Border-country Johnstone family of Annandale. Jonson's clergyman father died two months before his birth; his mother married a master bricklayer two years later.[4][5] Jonson attended school in St. Martin's Lane. Later, a family friend paid for his studies at Westminster School, where the antiquarian, historian, topographer, and officer of arms, William Camden (1551–1623) was one of his masters. In the event, the pupil and the master became friends, and the intellectual influence of Camden's broad-ranging scholarship upon Jonson's art and literary style remained notable, until Camden's death in 1623. John Addington Symonds demonstrated in The Academy 16 (1884) that almost every line has its counterpart in “Epistle xxxiii” of the erotic love-letter Epistles of Philostratus, The Athenian.[4] Richard Cumberland had, however, identified the link to "an obscure collection of love-letters" by Philostratus as early as 1791.[5] George Burke Johnston noted that "the poem is not a translation, but a synthesis of scattered passages. Although only one conceit is not borrowed from Philostratus, the piece is a unified poem, and its glory is Jonson's. It has remained alive and popular for over three hundred years, and it is safe to say that no other work by Jonson is so well known."[6] Another classical strain in the poem derives from Catullus.[7] In a brief notice J. Gwyn Griffiths noted the similarity of the conceit of perfume given to the rosy wreath in a poem in the Greek Anthology[8] and other classical parallels could be attested, natural enough in a writer of as wide reading as Jonson.

The final scene of this play, whilst certainly not to be taken at face value as a portrait of Jonson, offers a caricature that is recognisable from Drummond's report -- boasting about himself and condemning other poets, criticising performances of his plays, and calling attention to himself in any available way. This "War of the Theatres" appears to have ended with reconciliation on all sides. Jonson collaborated with Dekker on a pageant welcoming James I to England in 1603 although Drummond reports that Jonson called Dekker a rogue. Ben Jonson was Shakespeare s great contemporary and [Jonson's canon] is not quite as large a corpus, but it s a pretty large corpus of plays, poems and some prose, as well. He lived longer than Shakespeare. He was a very argumentative, quarrelsome, contentious man. They got along apparently, as far as we know, pretty well, although there was a famous sense of the difference between the two of them, but he is the other major dramatic figure during Shakespeare s lifetime. So Ben was his great rival in the contemporary and he wrote Volpone, The Alchemist, Epicoene, Every Man In His Humor, Every Man Out of His Humor. These are plays which were very big on the London scene. Especially in the theater, texts keep changing. The truism of the post-structuralist: that there isn t a text, but texts. There s a plural--that they evolve through time. It is so true of the theater. A man writes a script or a woman writes a script, submits it to a company, they act it, they don t like this and that, they throw certain things out and amend it as it s going along. It gets published in various editions, then it gets performed by later generations, through the 19th and 20th and 21st centuries. Then you ve got a whole structure here, which is somehow based around a thing that s called Volpone. This is called the edition of Herford and Simpson, those are the two editors. It s available in eleven volumes, big, fat volumes. It s again, quite a corpus. It is a very substantial piece of work based very primarily on the great folio edition that he brought out first in 1616. There was a later folio in the 1640s and he did a lot of revising. The older school of method used to take the view that you should use the folio because that would seem to represent his final views and so on. But the folio is very literary, whereas the earlier texts are sometimes much more theatrical. He wanted to make them literary, because he thought of himself as a literary giant. He s preparing this text for his posterity and so on. But there are real questions now in terms of textual method and what you want and so on and there are arguments in favor of going back to these earlier editions as the basis for your work. So the text will actually be different. where as that earlier edition is very scholarly and it s not a user-friendly edition in terms of something available for graduates, undergraduates, even for people in the field. The learning in it is very scholarly. The old spelling means that you really have to love that and it s not one you d want to use for your classroom use or for theatrical use. So we re going to use modern spelling and introduce more, sort of glossing and terminology. We're just straightening out verbal and meaning difficulties in the text too and will try to aim at user-friendly for an audience that will include sort of the whole academic community. There are a number of things we are changing that will make it a very different edition. One is that we re now going to bring out an electronic edition, along with the print edition. So the electronic [edition] will be able to expand into having more extensive information about sources and textual problems, that sort of thing. We can also, if we want, include essays because an electronic edition can be open-ended; you can keep bringing stuff into it. So that s exciting. We re still piecing out what the electronic edition of this Jonson will be like, but obviously it offers opportunities for hypertext so that you can pull up the 1616 folio and put it side-by-side with an earlier quarto or also with your edited page. We will provide an old spelling edition of the text and you can compare that with the modern. There are lots of good illustrations about Jonson's costuming especially, you can pull up other commentaries, you'll just be able to work as they were in the library by putting things up on your screen. I'm hoping that that s what s going to happen. I assume that that's the case.
