MTH Premier PRR T1 Duplex (4-4-4-4) O-Gauge Steam Locomotive in True HD 1080p
The Pennsylvania RR T1 Duplex (4-4-4-4) was conceived in the late 1930s as a replacement for the Pennsylvania Railroad's aging fleet of K4 Pacifics. Although it looked like an articulated locomotive (such as a Challenger or Big Boy), it was actually a duplex, two engines on a single rigid frame. The idea was to eliminate all the moving parts (including flexible steam pipes) required to swivel the front engine of an articulated, yet retain the additional power offered by two pairs of cylinders. Styled by famed industrial designer Raymond Loewy, the T1 represented the Pennsy's best hopes for a technologically advanced steamer that could compete with diesels. Extensive testing of the first two T1s, delivered in 1942, indicated the new design was a winner - a single passenger engine capable of hauling a sixteen car train at a hundred miles an hour. Glowing reports from these tests convinced management to place an order for 50 additional engines. Pennsy's Altoona works and Baldwin Locomotive Works split the order, each producing 25 engines in 1945-46. In actual service, however, the locomotives did not live up to the promise of the test engines. Although they were indeed speedy and powerful, the rigid duplex frame gave the engine an unfortunate tendency to rock back and put most of its weight on the rear drivers, allowing the front engine to slip uncontrollably. It took a very skillful engineer to keep a T1 pulling surely on all eight drivers. Given more time, these problems ...

Lionel Legacy T1 4-4-4-4 Duplex Review & Running Session
please visit: www.pghtrainfanatic.com History Designed for fastest passenger service the T1 locomotive was everything: beautiful to behold, unusual, powerful, & fast. The Pennsylvania Railroad's 52 T1 class duplex-drive 4-4-4-4 steam locomotives, introduced in 1942 (2 prototypes) and 1946 (50 production), were their last-built steam locomotives and their most controversial. They were ambitious, technologically sophisticated, powerful, fast, and uniquely streamlined by Raymond Loewy. However, they were also prone to violent wheelslip both when starting and at speed, complicated to maintain, and expensive to run. In 1948, the PRR vowed to place diesel locomotives on all express passenger trains, leaving unanswered whether the T1's flaws were solvable. However, a Spring, 2008 article in the Pennsylvania Railroad Technical and Historical Society Magazine revealed that the wheel-slip problems were caused by the failure to properly train engineers transitioning to the T1, resulting in excessive throttle applications, which in turn caused the wheel-slips on this very powerful locomotive. There were two experimental engines, the first, the 6110, and the second the 6111, both were built in 1942 by Baldwin for the war time traffic. The 6111 was equipped with a Franklin booster in its trailing truck; this added 13500 lbs. of tractive effort, no other T1's had boosters. In April 1944, the 6110 was sent to Altoona test plant for a thorough instrument check after compiling 120000 miles ...

Live Steam Model Locomotive - CPR Hudson in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada
Running our 3-1/2" gauge CPR Hudson live steam locomotive at the Golden Horseshoe Live Steamers track in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Boiler, cylinder block & wheel castings were commercial items, the rest is custom machined. The loco is a great runner, and includes functional steam turbogenerator with (bright!) headlight and cab lights, working duplex boiler feed pump, and steam-operated locomotive brakes.

LEGO Pennsylvania T1 Duplex #5544
My LEGO version of a Pennsylvania T! Duplex 4-4-4-4 steam locomotive. The locomotive performed decently at the TexLUG display, but unfortunately the tables provided to us were so unlevel and warped that it caused a lot of problems with the track, so it had a few issues. When TexLUG finally builds its' own tables, we'll finally be able to solve these problems.

PRR T1 Duplex #5505 at Horseshoe Curve (1949)
*Watch in HD and Pump Volume Up* Track Description... "Class T1 (4-4-4-4) #5505 westbound, climbing Horseshoe Curve just west of Altoona, PA with a Harrisburg-Pittsburgh Local Train #19. First heard 1/4 mile away, the T1's exhaust fades then strengthens as she passes the site of Kittanning Point Station and rounds the Curve, heading towards Gallitzin. Note the unusual sounds of the T1's poppet valves. This recording was made on July 5, 1949. From "Steam on the Standard Railroad of the World.
