Federico Moreno Torroba (3 March 1891 – 12 September 1982) was a Spanish composer, conductor, and theatrical impresario. He is especially remembered for his important contributions to the classical guitar repertoire, becoming one of the leading twentieth-century composers for the instrument. He was also one of the foremost composers of zarzuelas, a form of Spanish light opera. His 1932 zarzuela, Luisa Fernanda, has proved to be enduringly popular. In addition, he composed ballets, symphonic works, and piano pieces, as well as one-act operas and one full-length opera, El poeta, which premiere in 1980, starring well-known tenor Plácido Domingo. Moreno Torroba also ran his own zarzuela company, which toured extensively, especially in Latin America.
Over the course of his long career, Moreno Torroba composed many works, both in traditional Spanish forms and for the concert hall. He is often associated with the zarzuela, a traditional Spanish musical form. He achieved his greatest success in the 1930s with the zarzuelas Luisa Fernanda (1932) and La Chulapona (1934). Directing several opera companies, Moreno Torroba helped introduce the zarzuela to international audiences. In 1946 he formed a zarzuela company with singers Plácido Domingo Ferrer and Pepita Embil, the parents of Plácido Domingo and close friends of his. The company toured Latin America for two years, becoming particularly popular in Mexico. Moreno Torroba also composed operas, of which La Virgen de Mayo (1925) and El poeta (1980) with Plácido Domingo in the title role, are his best known. In addition to his vocal works, he is well known for his compositions for the classical guitar, many of which were dedicated to either Maria Angélica Funes or Andrés Segovia. He also frequently conducted.

Filmmaker Christopher Nupen about the film: "The title, "Andrés Segovia: The Song of Guitar", comes from a short poem by the Spanish poet, Eugenio d'Ors, "La Canción de la Guitarra", which Segovia recites in the film. "La canción del piano - es un discurso - la canción del 'cello - es una elegía - la canción de la guitarra - es una canción." (The song of the piano is a discourse. The song of the cello is an elegy. The song of the guitar - is a song). In the first film (Segovia at los Olivos), Segovia talks on camera. In the second, his voice is out of vision, except for a short statement at the beginning and he talks not about his career, but about his youth and about the spirit in which he set out on his remarkable quest - a great artist in late maturity remembering the genesis of his ex...

Edson Lopes play Burgalesa by Federico Moreno Torroba Edition: Edson Lopes Level: Advanced Guitar: Andrea Tacchi, 2015
I'm trying to walk up the stairs
My hands are snatchin' at the slivers of light
I'm stickin' to the steps
Each one a release
From the place below
I'm on a mission
On the hunt for clean
Clear vapour skies
'Cos I'm choking on my own
I need some air
The dark skies behind me
Begging you to scrape off, your disco paint
It's open to the night
And I'm sick as a hospital
And empty factories
You look so tiny, so very unimportant
I'm nearly there, and everything feels fine
Don't wanna look behind me
Don't wanna look beneath me
Every movement
Every vibration
Every movement
Every vibration
High above piss city
Watch the pigs-ear people
All dead in their drows
Some suffer in silence
Someone sparks
Some gorge sucking on silicone
I've got the urge to jump
Watch life whizz by
Fast foward flash
But hold on boy
I feel... alive
Don't wanna look behind me
Don't wanna look beneath me
Every movement
Every vibration
Every movement
Every vibration
Don't wanna look behind me
Don't wanna look beneath me
Every movement
Every vibration
Every movement
Every vibration
Don't wanna look behind me
Don't wanna look beneath me
Every movement
Every vibration
Every movement
