The A7V was the first German tank it was built in very limited numbers in World War I and saw some action. Unlike many other German tanks it has a quite negative reputation, which is probably not justified. In this video I take a look at the production history, numbers built, armor, armament, measurements and the very interesting crew layout.

I used the tank encylclopdia articles for references values on the Mark V tanks armour. Due to several errors in the Wikipedia articles of the A7V, encountered and corrected several errors on the A7V values.

This fascinating five minute French video shows the German A7V tank, Elfriede, captured during the Battle of Villers-Bretonneux on 24 April 1918, undergoing evaluation.
The Germans only built twenty A7Vs – they had a crew of 18 and were not a very successful design – but they did put far more captured British tanks back into action.
The only surviving A7V is Mephisto, which was abandoned by its crew at Villers-Bretonneux. It was later recovered and taken to Australia in 1919 as a trophy. It is currently on display at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra.

One hundred chassis were ordered in early 1918, ten to be finished as fighting vehicles with armored bodies, and the remainder as cargo carriers. The number to be armored was later increased to 20. They were used in action from March to October of that year, and were the only tanks produced by Germany in World War I to be used in operations.

Le Sturmpanzerwagen A7V fut le premier (et seul) char d'assaut construit par l'armée allemande durant la Première Guerre mondiale. Sa mise en service fut très tardive (le premier exemplaire fut livré le 1er octobre 1917). Le haut commandement allemand ne croyait pas à l'utilité du char d'assaut. Il y eut plus de chars de prise alliés utilisés par les forces allemandes que d'A7V.

A7V er en tysk stridsvogn fra første verdenskrig, lansert i 1918. I alt ble 22 A7V stridsvogner produsert, inkludert en uten bestykning og med treplater som pansring som ble brukt til trening og den eksperimentelle A7V-U som hadde et skrog som kopierte den britiske rombeformen deres samtidige stridsvogner brukte. A7V debuterte i kamp 21. mars 1918 ved St. Quentin og ble brukt frem til slutten av første verdenskrig.

This fascinating five minute French video shows the German A7V tank, Elfriede, captured during the Battle of Villers-Bretonneux on 24 April 1918, undergoing evaluation.
The Germans only built twenty A7Vs – they had a crew of 18 and were not a very successful design – but they did put far more captured British tanks back into action.
The only surviving A7V is Mephisto, which was abandoned by its crew at Villers-Bretonneux. It was later recovered and taken to Australia in 1919 as a trophy. It is currently on display at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra.
