Pot roast is an American variation of the French dish boeuf à la mode, which includes numerous influences from German and Jewish immigrants. Exact origins are difficult to find however, in an early cook book titled: "The Yankee Cook Book" by Imogene Wolcott, the author publishes a recipe for Pot Roast that includes raisins along with the traditional ingredients.
French immigrants to the United States are known for a cooking method called à l'étouffeé for tenderizing meats. Their influence through New Hampshire and Maine can be seen as reasonable evidence for this origin. Later immigrants from Germany to Pennsylvania and the Mid West would create sauerbraten and marinated roasts, larded and slow cooked for taste and tenderness. In New Orleans, Daube was a popular dish. Jewish immigrants would bring in adaptations from Hungary, Austria, and Russia.

Everyday Food from the test kitchens of Martha Stewart Living was a digest size cooking magazine and PBS public television program published and produced by Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (MSLO). Both feature quick and easy recipes targeted at supermarket shoppers and the everyday cook.
Everyday Food was established in 2003. The television show, which is distributed nationwide on PBS by WETA-TV, includes recipes and tips from the magazine and is hosted by five members of the MSLO senior editorial staff. It stopped print versions in December 2012.
A companion series, Everyday Baking from Everyday Food, with John Barricelli as the principal chef, is also presented on PBS by WETA-TV.
Unlike most other PBS cooking shows, these programs are heavily edited, using extreme closeups, and never show any of the product brands used.

In our first video we show you how to simply prepare a pot roast with wine. A few tips for making this dish: Use a dutch oven for all preparation if you have one. This will allow you to sautee, braise, and prepare the gravy all in one pot. If you don't have one, you can sear all of your meat and vegetables in a pan and then transfer to a slow cooker or roasting pan. At the end when your roast has finished cooking, simply remove all of your ingredients and ladle the broth into a saucepan and complete the gravy there. The one pot method also minimizes clean up! Use kosher salt if you can. This type of salt will hold up to the searing better than iodized table salt. Plus it just tastes better to me. Add the cornstarch to COLD water and always add the cornstarch to the water and not the oth...

This recipe will work with any beef roast. You can use any carrots and potatoes, but the baby carrots and new potatoes taste better and cut down on preparation time and effort. I usually prepare 8 ounces of beef per person, and 6 ounces of carrots and 6 ounces of potatoes per person (per-cooked weight). I always use yellow onions and you can add more or less to taste. You will also need salt, pepper, garlic powder or fresh garlic, Worcestershire sauce and cornstarch. I cook the roast slowly and for a long time which makes it very tender, at least an hour per pound. If you are making a smaller or larger roast adjust the corn starch. A little corn starch will thicken a lot of liquid. So when you are making your gravy add your corn starch/water mixture slowly and stop as soon as it starts to ...
