https://www.expedia.com/Patagonia-Region.d6053659.Destination-Travel-Guides
At the fabled ‘edge of the world’ the natural wonders of Patagonia await. This last frontier of South America slopes down from The Andes towards Antarctica.
This is a land of legendary beauty, where Mother Nature runs the show. Prepare to feel dwarfed by mighty volcanoes, towering glaciers and floating icebergs.
On the Argentinean side, a relaxing day trip takes you from sleepy San Martín de los Andes to Villa La Angostura. Simply follow the scenic Road of the 7 Lakes, taking in two national parks. This will bring you to San Carlos de Bariloche, a popular mountain resort on the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapi.
Take a detour along the famous Ruta 40 to the town of El Chaltén: Argentina’s trekking capital in the southern Andes. Hike to the idyllic Laguna Capri or higher lookout points to gaze up at Fitz Roy mountain. View the jagged peaks of Cerro Torre, which few dare to climb.
El Calafate is nestled on the southern shores of Lago Argentino, the gateway lake to Los Glaciares National Park. Embark on an epic journey to the world’s third-largest freshwater reserve: the Perito Moreno Glacier.
Board the 'End of the World Train’ to Tierra del Fuego National Park or join a cruise along the Beagle Channel, to experience Antarctica without actually going there.
On the Chilean side, you can find fascinating historic and cultural attractions in pretty colonial cities, such as the regional capital Punta Arenas.
On your way north, take a detour to the Milodón cave. This prehistoric shelter held the remains of a giant ground-dwelling sloth and other huge extinct species.
The dramatic national park of Torres del Paine is brimming with lakes that spill out into gorgeous waterfalls, such as Salto Grande.
Spot the spectacular outline of the Osorno Volcano, the focal point of Los Lagos, the lake region that forms the northern border of Chilean Patagonia.
This magical wilderness at the far edge of the world reminds us that we are just temporary spectators of nature’s infinite beauty.

As the longest, thinnest country in the world, Chile stretches all the way from the borders with Bolivia and Peru in the north, 4,500ks to Tierra del Fuego in the south, and yet at its widest point it, in the Atacama Desert, is only 400ks across. Sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean and the towering Andes, this fascinating Latin American country is home to the world’s driest desert, arguably the continent’s most stunning national park, an impressive wine region and, on Chiloe Island, the home of the potato! An economically sound country that is fast become a first world nation, Chile has a huge amount to offer the modern traveller.
Unless coming in overland, most trips to Chile will start here in the nation’s capital, Santiago.
Although most guidebooks will tell you Santiago is not as exciting at Rio or as elegant and enchanting as Buenos Aires, and should be used only as a gateway to the rest of the country, I feel it is an interesting place to explore for a day or two. Like many large Latin American cities it suffers somewhat from schizophrenic urban design where the city’s impressive colonial past is often dwarfed and obscured by its more ugly modern present; tenement towers and, since its rise as a regional economic powerhouse – Chile has the highest GDP per capita in South America – glass fronted office blocks. But there are still some great sites to check out including the Plaza de Armas, the Palacio Modera, the city’s main museum, and the Mercado Central, where you can enjoy a delicious seafood lunch, beneath a roof that was actually made in Birmingham! Santiago also has some lovely hotels and is famous for its excellent dining.
But Santiago is unlikely to form the main reason for your visit to Chile, that is much more likely to lie either in the far north, in the Atacama region or in the far south in Patagonia.
From Santiago, and starting in the very south of the country in Chilean Patagonia, is Puerto Aranas, entry point for what is arguably the continents most impressive national park, Torres del Paine. Deriving its name from the bull-like horns of the park’s most impressive mountain, Torres del Paine covers a quarter of a million hectares, is home to some spectacular and varied accommodation, and is a great place to hike, horse ride or just enjoy the scenery.
ADD PLENTY OF SHOTS HERE
Moving north, we come to the beautiful Lake District around the towns of Puerto Montt and Puerto Varas. Here, up the Puelo River valley, you can do some wonderful horse riding as well as walking and kayaking. A short distance off the coast you also have Chiloe Island, which along with stunning coastal walks is also famous for being home of the potato. And further still off the coast, in fact more than 2,000 miles into the Pacific Ocean, is the extraordinary Easter Island… a land shrouded in mystery with its dramatic stone head carvings, Easter Island is one of the most remote inhabited islands on the planet.
Heading further north other notable places are the beautiful coastal towns of La Serena and Valparaiso – just a stone’s throw from the capital Santiago – and the wine district of Coquimbo where some of the country’s leading wines are manufacture
And here in the far north of the country, lies the truly extraordinary Atacama Desert. Bordering Bolivia, Peru and Argentina, is a region that’s renowned as being the driest place on earth.
Sitting in the rain shadow of both the Andes and the Chilean Coastal Range, the Atacama Desert is renowned as being the driest place on earth. It is also the region that has been driest for longest, with some suggesting a continuous arid area here dating back at least three million years. Some of the soil has no life at all, a situation NASA has exploited to test instruments for Mars missions. And, due to its otherworldly landscapes, it has been used as a location on numerous space films including Space Odyssey: Voyage to the Planets.
Forming the northern chain of Chile’s ‘Ring of Fire’ the region is framed by a spectacular girdle of volcanoes and plethora of fascinating geographical phenomenon.
A country fast emerging as a first world nation, Chile offers today’s traveller a safe location with some great accommodation, fine dining and world-class wines. But first and foremost she offers some of the most varied and impressive landscapes anywhere on earth.

A CANADIAN'S GUIDE TO BRINGING ALCOHOL BACK ACROSS THE U.S. BORDER
We've given you a detailed round-up of cross-border shopping regulations, but here's a more detailed discussion of limits on bringing alcohol across the Canadian-American border.
• What You Can Bring Back within 24 hours
• Over 48 hours
• After 7 days
• Alcohol Taxes and Duties
• Shipping Alcohol to Yourself
• Hot Tips for Crossing the Border with Booze
Heading down to Seattle for a concert and unsure of what to do with your leftover six-pack? Catching a ballgame in Detroit and hoping to bring some microbrews home to celebrate? Want to return from your Napa Valley vineyard tour with a few bottle? Here's our fool-proof guide to moving across the Canada-U.S. border with alcohol.
UNDER 24 HOURS (AKA SAME-DAY CROSS BORDER SHOPPING)
Sorry. No personal exemptions. You have to declare and pay duties and taxes for any alcohol that you bring back into Canada if you're doing a trip of less than one day. If you could just pop across the border and buy a few bottles of wine, would the half of our population who live close enough to America to drive there in a few hours ever shop at their local liquor store? You can roll the dice and “forget” about a bottle in your luggage, but if you're unlucky and you get searched you could be delayed, harassed, flagged, and/or charged the duties anyhow. It's your call.
AFTER 48 HOURS
This is the ticket. After 48 hours, your personal exemption shoots up to goods valuing $800 and your “personal exemption” kicks in: you can bring back a two-four of beer (8.5 litres) or two bottles of wine (1.5 litres) or one bottle of liquor (1.14 litres) without paying taxes or duties. The personal exemption applies to everyone travelling in your vehicle who is above the legal drinking age in their province of residence, so if you can fit all of those bottles and all of your non-drinking friends in a minivan, load them up and camp out for a few days so that you can combine exemptions.
AFTER 7 DAYS
Your alcohol can travel separately from you. The personal exemption does not change.
HOW MUCH YOU HAVE TO PAY IN DUTIES AND TAXES ON ALCOHOL
That of course doesn't mean that you can't bring alcohol back across the border on a same-day trip. In fact, you can bring up to 45 litres of alcohol at a time for personal use across the border at any time as long as you declare it and pay the duties and taxes. The duties are governed by the ever-changing, byzantine schedule of Canadian tariffs that cover trade with other countries. The taxes you pay depend on your province of entry – provincial or harmonized sales taxes will apply, the amount varying from province-to-province. Check out the chart below:
Canadian Provincial and Territorial Tax Rates
Province Total Sales Tax (%) Province Total Sales Tax (%)
Alberta 5 Nunavut 5
British Columbia 12 Ontario 13
Manitoba 13 Prince Edward Island 14
New Brunswick 13 Quebec 15
Newfoundland and Labrador 13 Saskatchewan 10
Northwest Territories 5 Yukon 5
Nova Scotia 15
Ontario's liquor monopoly, the LCBO, has a series of helpful charts outlining the standard duty and taxes for importing alcohol to that province, and the rules more or less apply across the country. You must be legal drinking age, and you have to bring or ship the alcohol to your province of residence. The 45 litres can be any combination of wine, liquor or beer, and you have to produce receipts for your purchases.
In general, expect the cost of your beer and liquor to double and the price of your wine to increase by 60% once you've paid duties and taxes at the border. Because of the lower price of alcohol in America, that means an average case of 24 beer will basically reach the Canadian price for the same when you bring it across the border. Will you save money? No. But you can access a wide range of specialty items unavailable in Canada for modest extra costs. The tightly regulated alcohol markets in Quebec, Ontario, and Nova Scotia make this an especially attractive proposition — the more freewheeling alcohol policies of the western provinces mean much greater diversity in liquor store offerings, so it's best to check if your local stores offer the wine of your dreams before you plan that road trip.

When traveling from Central America to the United States through Mexico, immigrants are forced to battle drug cartels, corrupt police officers, and human traffickers, all before they even come close to the US border.
People tend to assume that the immigrants crossing the US--Mexico border are all Mexican. The reality is that a large percentage of them come from Central America, and their journey north is grueling. To get to the US, they first have to pass through Mexico, an ordeal that often ends up being even more difficult than getting into the United States. Most migrants cross into Mexico on rafts, via the Suchiate River. After that, they need to protect themselves from corrupt Mexican police, drug cartels like the infamous Zetas, and even fellow migrants. They often travel by foot and by pubic transit, but many of them ride on top of "the Beast," the freight trains that travel from the south to the north of Mexico.
While the majority of the migrants are young men, a small percentage of them are women who endure hardships like the possibility of being raped by basically anyone they come across. Some of them are forced to stay in the border state of Chiapas and work as prostitutes because they are too weak to keep going, need to save some money to continue their journey, or, if they decide to stay , so they can travel back and forth between Mexico and their home countries to visit their kids[NJ1] .
In this episode of Fringes, we followed Yoana, a young girl from Guatemala who has been living in the small town of Huixtla, Chiapas, working as a prostitute to make money to help her two sons. We tagged along with a special unit from the state government that is in charge of protecting migrants as they travel through Chiapas. We then hopped on board the Beast with more than 400 other migrants traveling from Arriaga to Ixtepec, Oaxaca, to try to understand the hardships they go through and why they leave their homes in the first place.
