"TOTAL TERRORISM SOLUTION" STUNS EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT

Hoax highlights failures of military, security approaches to terrorism

Today in the European Parliament in Brussels, a "defense and security consultant" (actually Andy Bichlbaum of the Yes Men, working together with Greek MEP Stelios Kouloglou) presented an industrial solution to terrorism" which—unlike all other military and security solutions—is guaranteed to actually work

During the presentation, Bichlbaum described the failures of military action, drone operations, assassinations, surveillance, and policing to reduce terrorism in any way—before presenting the "solution": a fully-defended orb called the "ENDURAsphere," that gives well-heeled citizens the ability to outlast any terrorist attack. The audience, which included media, members of the public, and several MEPs, asked over 10 minutes' worth of questions.

"This hoax was about highlighting that there really is no solution to terrorism within the defense and security paradigm," said Bichlbaum. "Military 'solutions' backfire badly."

Bichlbaum wore a colonial-era moustache. "Any 'solution' to terrorism that doesn't take colonial history into account is bound to fail completely," said Bichlbaum. "From the parcelling of the Middle East after WWI to the invasion of Iraq by the US, there are reasons things are as they are."

Speaking to press after the event, MEP Kouloglou highlighted some actual solutions to terrorism. "Bombing is a recruiting tool for ISIS," he said. "If we want to undermine terrorists, we need to end the war in Syria, welcome Middle Eastern refugees, and marginalize extremists by establishing better relationships with moderate forces in Islam. We also need to better integrate the youth of our most disadvantaged communities."

Today's hoax, part of a Charlie Hebdo commemoration organized by Kouloglou together with MEP Martin Sonneborn, represents the first action of its sort to take place within the European Parliament. It's also the first time the Yes Men have collaborated with any national representatives to develop an action.

Greetings, friends and spies!

We can’t afford to send you all fruitcakes. But we do have a small gift – a few fun tales from this past year. At the end of this post, we’ll also let you in on a few little secrets about the next one.

And oh, by the way--all of our work depends on donations from people like you. If anything in here tickles your fancy, please consider sending an end-of-year gift to us at the Yes Lab.

Ok, here we go:

In 2015 we...

… released a new movie!
The critics loved our third feature film, The Yes Men Are Revolting. Looking ahead to 2016, we still have a DVD to release and we’re hoping it gets widely televised around the world.  Unlike our last two films, we don’t already have deals in France or the UK, so please do tell if you have any ideas. Note to aspiring filmmakers: fooling the BBC in a prior film could make it hard to ever get on the telly again in that territory! Luckily, we’re troublemakers, not filmmakers, and it is pretty hard to get blacklisted from mischief.

… got into trouble releasing a new movie!
A bunch of odd shenanigans transpired while we toured with the film. Like when we were ejected from the lavish “Cinema for Peace” gala in Berlin – for bringing a polar bear and hijacking the microphone (video here).  Or when when we found ourselves in New York, dressed as Shell representatives, offering residents their first taste of the last frontier: snow cones made from the Arctic’s last icebergs (video here).

… single-handedly defeated Shell’s diabolical plans to drill the Arctic!
Okay, maybe it wasn’t just us, but after sustained actions from thousands of activists and organizations like Greenpeace, Shell withdrew from the Arctic. It may not have been our victory alone, but they did send out their withdrawal announcement just when Andy was returning from a secret project to foil them in Greenland. Coincidence?

… pardoned Ed Snowden!
When we were asked to interview the exiled Edward Snowden at Politicon in Los Angeles, we decided to take it a step further, and have him make a live appearance. The crowd went nuts when they thought Snowden was there – giving us a chance to see the joy many Americans will feel when Obama really does pardon him (it’s up to you to help make that happen!). We had a great time working with Snowden, and we expect more to come.

… haunted the US Army!
On All Hallow's Eve, we dressed as spooky ghosts and invaded downtown Frederick, MD to spread the truly terrifying story about how the U.S. military disposed of chemical and biological weapons in a bunch of local neighborhoods, causing a slew of rare cancers. A video about the action is slated to be on a new MSNBC program this winter – and we expect to be back there with more ghosts next year… and every year thereafter until the military admits what happened, compensates victims, and cleans up their act.

… skipped showers for beef!
Our wackiest project to date was about a very serious way to address the California drought by changing the way we do agriculture. When we discovered that factory-farmed beef uses up an astonishing 1800 gallons of water per pound—half of California's annual water use—we knew we needed a radical solution. Working with the brilliant, twisted folks at Funny or Die, we came up with a “beef industry campaign” encouraging people to offset each quarter-pound hamburger by skipping 55 showers. Very few folks ever realized it was a fake; it's come to that. (video here)

… eulogized the World Economic Forum!
When we were asked to participate in the last ever “public eye on Davos” WEF counter-summit, we conducted a funeral for that pompous body. And the WEF really is dead, at least intellectually – the world’s problems are not going to be solved by bringing the world’s richest people (plus Bono) into a fortified ski resort high in the Alps. The WEF may well meet again this year—but that'll just be reanimating the corpse.

… trained new recruits and gave motivational speeches!
This past year we also launched a new distance-learning workshop for creative activism to incubate new projects. The first class cooked up several interesting capers, all of which are still underway. We also did workshops and presentations at 51 conferences, schools, and social centers around the world! We’re confident that these events spark more mischief after we leave… and sometimes we get put up to something on the spot, like the impromptu speech we gave as Shell at Seattle’s Earth Day celebrations, or the time we found ourselves suddenly representing consultants for the Regents of the University of Iowa. One more highlight from this year’s trainings: our residency at Bogazici University in Istanbul.

In 2016 we will…

… kick more butt!
We have a very busy year ahead. We are still releasing the new film, and plan to be on the road quite a bit with that. We may do a television show—more on that later. We might also dig a bunch of really funny stuff out of the archive and release it, if we can dig up a bit of money for an editor. We have a few crazy secret projects in the works. But if we tell you about them, they won’t be secret, right?

...stop eating meat!
Yes, We’re doing that too. We realized that some young people look up to us (ha ha!) so it’s time to be role models. And also in the meat department, we have this awesome thing called the Action Switchboard, our perverted Zuckerbergian attempt at getting billions of the world’s denizens involved in direct action mischief in the name of social causes. But so far there are barriers that have prevented billions from populating it with awesome ideas…  so we’re retooling for the new year by incorporating it into our distance-learning program and workshops.

...get arrested!
One big part of what we do now that we’ve got a bit of notoriety is get out there and inspire the youth (and sometimes the elderly) with speeches and workshops. We’re more available than ever for this kind of thing, especially since Andy’s faculty appointment (and thus paychecks) from NYU ended last summer. If you have ideas on who we should talk to and where we should speak (and on where Andy might get a new job), please give us a holler. Oh, and about those arrests—for one thing, we’re planning to join some indigenous activists in Minnesota who are planning some things along proposed routes of some post-Keystone pipelines. We've also joined with thousands to take a pledge of resistance for democracy next April, and you should too! So expect some news of direct action in the coming year—and we hope you can join us for the fun.

Thanks again for your support. We hope that we can do even more together in 2016!  With your help, we most certainly can!

Much love,

Mike and Andy

As world leaders and civil society converge on Paris for the UNFCCC COP21, a group of award winning international filmmakers have come together to share urgent, funny, engaging and provocative stories that you could use in your community to kick off conversations about climate and social justice. Our desire to connect, to find ways to work together to reimagine a sustainable future is even more urgent after the tragic attack in Paris. Feel free to pass on this list far and wide.

The Yes Men Are Revolting

For the last 20 years, notorious activists The Yes Men have staged outrageous and hilarious hoaxes to draw international attention to corporate crimes against humanity and the environment. In their third cinematic outing The Yes Men Are Revolting  (after The Yes Men and The Yes Men Fix the World), they are now well into their 40s, and their mid-life crises are threatening to drive them out of activism forever – even as they prepare to take on the biggest challenge they’ve ever faced: climate change. Revealing the real people behind the ruses, at its heart lies a hopeful message about fighting for change. Watch the film now on itunes and Vimeo On Demand

This Changes Everything

Celebrating solutions and resistance from frontline communities around the world and asking “What if global warming isn’t only a crisis? What if it’s the best chance we’re ever going to get to build a better world?” the release of This Changes Everything was timed to to assist grassroots groups with their organising ahead of - and beyond - the Paris COP21. The documentary from Avi Lewis & Naomi Klein is now available worldwide for theatrical, community and home screenings. If you are in Paris during the COP21 you can join a special presentation about the The Leap Manifesto and screening with the filmmakers on December 2nd in Paris. And we encourage you to read Naomi’s od-ed ‘What’s really at stake now that marches are banned’.

Merchants of Doubt

Inspired by the acclaimed book by Naomi Oreskes and Erik Conway, Merchants of Doubt lifts the curtain on a secretive group of highly charismatic, silver- tongued pundits-for-hire who present themselves in the media as scientific authorities – yet have the contrary aim of spreading maximum confusion about well-studied public threats ranging from toxic chemicals to pharmaceuticals to climate change. Watch the film now at Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, Starz, VUDU, or YouTube.

How to Change the World

In 1971, a group of friends sailed into a nuclear test zone and their protest captured the world’s imagination, inspiring the creation of the global organisation that became Greenpeace.   How To Change The World from director Jerry Rothwell is a thrilling and sometimes terrifying look at these pioneering activists and their struggles and dilemmas as an international movement grew around them.  Their experiences serve up some essential lessons for any activist. If you are in Paris during COP21 then join Sea-Shepherd founder Paul Watson and activist Emily Hunter (daughter of Greenpeace’s first president Bob Hunter) at a special screening on the 10th December.  For details of this and how to watch the film or organise a screening go to http://howtochangetheworldmovie.com/.

The Age of Stupid

Franny Armstrong’s The Age of Stupid stars Pete Postlethwaite as an old man living alone in the devastated world of 2055, watching “archive" footage from the early 2000s and asking: why didn’t we stop climate change when we had the chance? Stupid was released in cinemas and on TV worldwide in 2009, won lots of awards, got tonnes of press coverage (everything from the front cover of New York Times to a full-on fashion shoot in Vogue) and also inspired the formation of the 10:10 climate campaign in 41 countries. Watch the film on the Spanner Films website or buy a license to hold your own screening from Indie Screenings.

Chasing Ice

Chasing Ice is the story of one man’s mission to change the tide of history by gathering undeniable evidence of our changing planet. James Balog, an acclaimed environmental  photographer, conceived the boldest expedition of his life: The Extreme Ice Survey. With a band of young adventurers in tow, Balog began deploying revolutionary time-lapse cameras across the brutal Arctic to capture a multi-year record of the world’s changing glaciers. His hauntingly beautiful videos compress years into seconds and capture ancient mountains of ice in motion as they disappear at a breathtaking rate. The film is available to view on Netflix, Amazon, and iTunes.

From the fracking frontlines there are two brilliant, urgent films to watch:

Unearthed

Unearthed from South Africa Investigates fracking from an international perspective and what this method of gas extraction could mean for the rural Karoo region of South Africa. Unearthed makes an urgent call for active citizenship, community-driven development plans and a responsible, renewable energy future. Visit the film website to find out more about how to screen the movie.

Frackman

Frackman shot in Australia, tells the story of accidental activist Dayne Pratzky and his struggle against international gas companies. Australia will soon become the world’s biggest gas exporters, as more than 30,000 wells are sunk in the state of Queensland where Dayne lives with many requiring controversial ‘fracking’. He and his neighbours have unwittingly become the centre of a massive industrial landscape and they have little power to fight the wishes of the $200 billion industry. Dayne embarks on a journey that transforms him from conservative pig-shooter to sophisticated global activist as the Frackman. On digital release in Australia from Dec 9th at Frackmanthemovie.

OBAMA PARDONS SNOWDEN; BI-PARTISAN CROWD GOES WILD

On Saturday, a capacity crowd at the Los Angeles Convention Center saw Edward Snowden make a surprise in-person public appearance, his first on U.S. soil since receiving a pardon from President Obama last week. The crowd at the bi-partisan event immediately burst into cheers, jumped to their feet, and rushed in to take Snowden's photo.

Sadly for everyone, "Snowden" was in fact a lookalike actor named David Neale, and the real Snowden—who appeared shortly after on a live video link and spoke for 45 minutes—was still in Russia, and hadn't been pardoned at all.

"The crowd's reaction demonstrates what would happen if Snowden were honored instead of punished for what he did," said Chris Paine, an L.A. filmmaker who was in attendance.

US presidents have pardoned thousands of people accused of or convicted of crimes, often because their actions were deemed to be in the public interest. "Edward Snowden's actions launched an extraordinary global debate and led to the most significant reforms in intelligence oversight in a generation," said Ben Wizner of the ACLU. "He should be thanked, not charged with espionage and locked in a cage."

During his talk, the real Snowden addressed a wide range of issues, including the surveillance state’s influence on free speech, how to stand up against eroding civil liberties, and the wide (and wild) variety of NSA programs built for warfare but now used to spy on U.S. citizens.

By mary@yeslab.org on Dec 15 2014 - 4:30pm Tagged: Project: Calling All Climate Activists

Before the UN Climate Talks in Lima, the New York Times told us that “at stake now is the difference between a newly unpleasant world and an uninhabitable one.” But in Lima, the world's governments chose the latter, offering the world not solutions but rather a roadmap to global burning

Are we really just going to sit by and watch until most species on earth—including our own—go extinct? Or are we going to turn up the heat on our tone-deaf leaders in every way that we can, until they finally realize they have to stand up to the fossil fuel companies, and stop the carbon madness?

Beginning in Janurary, we're inviting the entire People's Climate March network to join us for an ongoing organizing campaign on the Action Switchbaord so we can keep the pressure building. You're invited! Please join us! The Action Switchboard is a new organizing tool designed specifically to help movements continue building momentum in between the big moments. We'll be using it to stay connected as a network and keep doing actions together all year long!

Join us by entering your name and email address into the form on this page, and we'll invite you to calls and actions as we get started!

How will history remember the People’s Climate March?

In September, we all answered the rallying cry and came out for the People’s Climate March. It was the largest demonstrations for climate justice the world has ever seen. With 2000 demonstrations in 162 countries, the People’s Climate March (PCM) brought millions of people into the streets. It was incredible! It was inspiring!

But was it enough? What will history ultimately say about the People’s Climate March?

History will certainly remember the march itself, but what about the impact afterwards? Will the march have been a one-time event that got a big media splash and raised awareness of climate change issues—only to fade into memory as we all slip back into the status quo? Or will it have been the game-changing, catalytic event that sparked a new level of climate action all over the world, putting continual pressure on governments and corporations so that they finally started making the right decisions affecting our planet?

Obviously, we’re hoping for the latter outcome…. and we want to help make it happen. We know you do too.

Here’s the plan:

We are the Yes Men. You may have heard of us; we’re pretty well known for our outrageous satirical interventions at business events, on the internet, on television, and in the streets.

Over the years, literally thousands of activists have asked us to help them get more attention for their campaigns. We get way more requests for help than we can possibly handle! So, we recently released the Action Switchboard, an online platform that helps anyone at all pull off creative actions to launch continual actions for building movements. Not only that, but we also just premiered our third movie, The Yes Men Are Revolting, which we specifically crafted to inspire people to get out into the streets, take matters into their own hands, and take real action around climate change.

Of course we didn’t know that the climate movement would be at this critical crossroads just as we were releasing these new tools for action, but since it is, we need to use everything that we’ve been working on for the past few years to help make sure that the PCM is remembered as the moment that truly did change everything... the moment that turned things around, and—who knows—even saved the world!

Join us! We need you!

How’s this going to work?
  • The Action Switchboard is a new tool that helps activists brainstorm ideas, build a team, and get the resources you need to pull them off. Not only that, but if you need someone with a particular skill (videographer? actor? people willing to be arrested?) - then we will help you find the right person from our database of activists who are standing by to help!
  • We’ve partnered with network organizers from the People’s Climate March, who can help develop and support your actions.
  • Over the next 6 months, we will be hosting ongoing conference calls and in-person brainstorms so you can come up with actions and keep your network strong and working together. We will help you stay connected and informed by sharing news from all of your actions with everyone who joins this project.
  • As our new film, The Yes Men Are Revolting, is screened across the world, it will bring new climate activists into our movement. By continuing to stay active and engaged now, those newly inspired activists will discover a thriving network to help shepherd them into participating in actions. This could be great way to build our movement.
  • We are also exploring ways that you can screen the film yourself, in your own communities, to get the conversation started about climate activism. You might do this as a fundraiser for your projects, or use it to start local climate action groups to plan actions in your community.

Honestly, this is all a no-brainer. We have to do this. We just released these tools that support a network to build ongoing actions together, and it just so happens that it is ready just in time for this huge network that just formed from the PCM.  Will you join us so we can keep building pressure, reject their roadmap to global burning, and just maybe turn things around?

(This press release is courtesy of the SaveCanada organizers. See also this article, among many.)

TransCanada tries to replace Grassroots with P.R. Assholes

Leaked TransCanada documents about their proposed Keystone XL alternative, the Canada-spanning Energy East Pipeline, show just how dirty TransCanada is willing to get in their desperate attempt to ship dirty tar sands oil to the coast. According to these leaked documents, some of that dirt is to be slung at the Yes Lab.

To push their newest mega pipeline, they hired the mega misinformation PR goons Edelman to mess with the communities and groups along the route. The leaked documents show the strategy of attacking grassroots groups with smear campaigns while at the same time establishing phony grassroots to emulate support. Third-party proxy groups would be used to do the smearing, and to "put the pressure on, especially when TransCanada can't"—while the phony grassroots support would be conducted by the same Edelman PR gang that were caught astroturfing for the fake 'Working Families for WalMart' campaign (among other notable PR fails).

Perhaps TransCanada posing as a grassroots movement to establish phony public support was somehow inspired by the YesLab's SaveCanada action where we impersonated their PR team at their official community consultations.

In towns across Canada, troupes of mischievous activists swarmed TransCanada's events dressed just like their reps, but with lookalike "SaveCanada" shirts, name tags and brochures. Instead of promoting the pipeline, the SaveCanada reps communicated the risks. They even used TransCanada's map for an impromptu game of Pin the Spill on the Pipeline.

In one of the leaked documents SaveCanada is listed second on a list of groups targeted by Edelman for conducting "a preliminary audit of opposition groups and their messages."

Elsewhere, SaveCanada is listed as a national group that apparently "migrated (their) efforts and expertise into the Canadian policy arena." It seems Edelman's prowess for misinformation even extends to the briefings they put together for their client TransCanada.

TransCanada has run into difficulty selling this Keystone XL replacement to the public, and out of difficulty comes desperation. The leaked documents vow they will "add layers of difficulty for our opponents, distracting them from their mission and causing them to redirect their resources." This is part of their "pressure approach." All this is very classy for a company that has just filed this Energy East Pipeline project for regulatory consideration in Canada so is currently trying to sell themselves to the communities as a "good neighbor."

Edelman is the largest public relations firm in the World and Energy East would be the largest tar sands pipeline in the World. One leaks dishonesty and the other would leak diluted bitumen.

The main strategy document leaked emphasizes the ruthlessness of these tactics by saying, “we cannot allow opponents to have a free pass.” We would very much agree with that sentiment, but change it slightly, "we cannot let our opponents build the Climate-destroying, community-polluting Energy East Pipeline."

On June 18, 2014 Op de Valreep which won Alert Fund's Most Valued Project Award, was evicted by city government but not before activists put up an epic thirteen hour resistance where riot cops had to break through massive barricades and angle grind loose more than 10 people out of lockons. The neighbourhood has lost her living room, the city has lost one of her very, very few last free spaces, the politic establishment has lost all their credibility and Valreep volunteers have lost their home. But as they told the Yes Men:

WE DIDN' T LOSE OUR IDEALS!

Read the Eviction timeline here.

Despite a major campaign in the run-up to the elections, where the posters of all political parties were spoofed…
Despite putting the city slogan "I AMsterdam" in massive three dimensional letters on top of the roof…
Despite going to the city council for the hundredth time with hundreds of sympathisers, thousands of signatures, and a fullsize brassband…
Despite the massive support from the neighbourhood, in the city, throughout the country…
Despite winning the Alert fund Most Valued Project Award…

…Despite all of that, the city stubbornly decided to evict social centre Op de Valreep, the peoples initiative that was free to everyone and was run for almost three years solely by volunteers and without subsidies.

The city government has NEVER granted Valreep's SINGLE demand: Let us present our plans and consider us for renting/buying the place. We have a valid businessplan and investors backing that plan.

The Valreep will probably remain empty for a year, or more likely a few years, or as the case may be much longer, as they will presumably focus on redevelopment of the surrounding grounds. Eventually it will be renovated into yet another posh grand cafe (for the elite).

Despite the sense of loss of Valreep, its crucial to look at what worked.Valreep volunteers wrote in that they were able to survive for three years by enacting a massive campaign which incorporated feedback from The Yes Men. The kind of person to person, online to on-the-ground collaboration, support and hard core organizing that the Action Switchboard is rolling out to the wider movement very soon.

AmeriCAN or AmeriCAN'T? Contractors Dance Their Answer
Security bigwigs applaud plan for renewable energy revolution Twitter

Contractors, lobbyists and officials attending the Homeland Security Congress in Washington DC yesterday did a "traditional" Native American circle dance to celebrate a fictitious new US government plan, the "American Renewable Clean-Energy Network" (AmeriCAN), to convert the US to 100% renewable energy by 2030. (Photos here; other material here.)

The conference attendees—including a retired Navy Admiral, a retired USAF General, a former Seal Team Seven leader, an aspiring Republican Congressman, lobbyists, and many homeland security contractors—applauded frequently during the stirring announcement by the US Department of Energy's "Benedict Waterman" (actually Andy Bichlbaum of the Yes Men), as well as the eloquent speech by "Bana Slowhorse" of the Bureau of Indian Affairs (actually Gitz Crazyboy, a youth worker from the Athabascan Chippewyan First Nations, whose land includes the Alberta Tar Sands).

"Bana's" speech concluded: "We are all the Department of Energy." All attendees then danced a "celebratory circle dance" to the singing of "Drum Chief Four Feathers" (actually Tito Ybarra, an Ojibwe comedian and singer). After the event, two dozen contractors lined up to hand "Waterman" and "Slowhorse" their cards and offer their services in carrying out the conversion.

"Waterman's" energy plan would redirect oil company tax breaks and subsidies to support renewables instead; commit "Manhattan Project-level" Defense spending to renewables in order to prevent future climate-change-related conflicts; and partner with Native American nations whose lands could provide all of our renewable energy needs.

The plan, based on a number of sources including Stanford's Solutions Project (FAQ here), would produce nearly 8 million jobs; save $530 billion per year in health-care costs alone; result in much lower eventual fuel costs and greater price stability; and provide much greater energy security. It would also reduce the risk of the climate change effects that are projected to cost the US at least $2 trillion per year by 2100 if nothing is done to address it.

Best of all, "Waterman" said, the plan would make a survivable future more likely. He also said that the government was enacting this plan because people are increasingly upset about climate change, and that if we don't take revolutionary action today, there could be a real revolution tomorrow. The conference attendees applauded this statement too.

The action was intended to spread two messages: first, that a complete renewables conversion is indeed possible today, with our current technology; and second, that it will only happen if millions of people take action to force our leaders to truly represent us.

Besides the Yes Men, Crazyboy, and Ybarra, participants in this project included members of Idle No More, Iraq Veterans Against the War, and several other groups. The action occurred just a few days after the "Cowboys and Indians Alliance" rally against the Keystone XL pipeline.

"Waterman's" wig was made by RuPaul's wig designer for the occasion.
