Time for an early version of Lolita Goth. Strawberry Switchblade seemed to have sprung out of nowhere from Glasgow, and as with many offbeat artists at the time, caught the lucrative eye of the late great John Peel.
Borrowing from the punk scene but injecting a little art school irony, Rose McDowall and Jill Bryson infused the harshness of a heavily kohled eyeline with an explosion of polka dots. Not afraid of the wedding tiered rah rah skirt and a spot of colour and diamante sparkle, the girls found their creative nadir in this their biggest hit, Since Yesterday.
The Album itself rode off the success of this single with pretty much more of the same. The look and the sound form an essential part of the early 80s musical fabric, but the band struggled to find a foothole as mid-80s pop sheen gradually crept in. Still, they were big in japan and no prizes for guessing why.

M/S of a line of people making their way to the falls by a dusty path by the river; several shots of the falls; they look quite fierce.
M/Ss of a car crossing the Uganda Equator line as it travels along a road. M/S of a Land Rover driving through the Queen Elizabeth National Park; it passes a sign reading 'Elephant [sic] Have Right of Way'. Several shots of elephants in the park; a few babies are seen. Various wildlife shots show lions, buffalo (? or wildebeests), antelopes (?), vultures sitting beside bones and remains of an animal.
African men are seen fishing on the river (Nile?) from primitive canoes. Nice L/Ss of pelicans on the river bank. L/S of a lake which commentator tells us is in the crater of an extinct volcano. Various stunning shots of the snow-capped Ruwenzori mountains.
M/S of an African man beating a drum beside a Christian church (possibly in the capital city, Kampala) as numerous children and adults file in. We then see Acholi tribesmen doing a war-dance, wearing feathered head-dresses and carrying large shields.
Note: there is no print for this issue. Sound is intermittent on neg and transfer and is out of synch in places; may need to be adjusted if track is required. Cuts exist - see separate record.

The rah-rah (or ra-ra) skirt is a short flounced skirt that originated in cheerleading and became popular among teenage girls in the early 1980s. As such it marked, as the Oxford Dictionary noted, the first successful attempt to revive the miniskirt that had been introduced in the mid 1960s. Later in the 1980s it was often worn with leather, denim or lace.
In the 1990s the mini came back into fashion in its own right, largely discarding the frills of the rah-rah. However, the latter did return again in Britain in 2008: "Eighties look is all the ra-rave".
Examples of the rah-rah were to be seen on the covers of gramophone records or compact discs such as 99 Red Balloons by Nena (1983) and Since Yesterday by Strawberry Switchblade (1984).
Rah-rah is a reduplication of an abbreviation for "hurrah", which is used as a synonym for "cheering".

Time for an early version of Lolita Goth. Strawberry Switchblade seemed to have sprung out of nowhere from Glasgow, and as with many offbeat artists at the time, caught the lucrative eye of the late great John Peel.
Borrowing from the punk scene but injecting a little art school irony, Rose McDowall and Jill Bryson infused the harshness of a heavily kohled eyeline with an explosion of polka dots. Not afraid of the wedding tiered rah rah skirt and a spot of colour and diamante sparkle, the girls found their creative nadir in this their biggest hit, Since Yesterday.
The Album itself rode off the success of this single with pretty much more of the same. The look and the sound form an essential part of the early 80s musical fabric, but the band struggled to find a foothole as mid-80s pop sheen gradually crept in. Still, they were big in japan and no prizes for guessing why.

A boat called The Murchison is seen travelling along the River Nile with numerous tourists sitting on the roof; they look through binoculars and take photographs of animals seen along the way; hippos (nice footage of a mother hippo with a baby) wallowing in the water; crocodiles lying on a sand bank with mouths wide open. Lovely shots of a man (Caucasian) fishing by the river; a waterfall, the Murchiston / Murchison Falls, is seen in the background. M/S of a line of people making their way to the falls by a dusty path by the river; several shots of the falls; they look quite fierce.
M/Ss of a car crossing the Uganda Equator line as it travels along a road. M/S of a Land Rover driving through the Queen Elizabeth National Park; it passes a sign reading 'Elephant [sic] Have Right of Way'. Several shots of elephants in the park; a few babies are seen. Various wildlife shots show lions, buffalo (? or wildebeests), antelopes (?), vultures sitting beside bones and remains of an animal.
African men are seen fishing on the river (Nile?) from primitive canoes. Nice L/Ss of pelicans on the river bank. L/S of a lake which commentator tells us is in the crater of an extinct volcano. Various stunning shots of the snow-capped Ruwenzori mountains.
M/S of an African man beating a drum beside a Christian church (possibly in the capital city, Kampala) as numerous children and adults file in. We then see Acholi tribesmen doing a war-dance, wearing feathered head-dresses and carrying large shields.
Note: there is no print for this issue. Sound is intermittent on neg and transfer and is out of synch in places; may need to be adjusted if track is required. Cuts exist - see separate record.

I thought it would be the perfect day to record a vinyl set, so I gathered up a few records around me, new and old, just ones that I love, and I went to work. Perhaps truly haphazard behaviour on my part but, truth be known, I don't always plan out my sets when recording them, I just let the music be my guide. In this case this mix just seemed to really come together, and when I listened back, I hoped it would be worthy of the great Electronic Explorations. Thankfully, it was! * I send my apologies for the skip at 17:52, my cat Bear came flying past and clipped the deck on his way out the window. miaow. Enjoy!"

Strawberry Switchblade was a female pop rock band formed in Scotland in 1981 by Jill Bryson and Rose McDowall, best known for their song "Since Yesterday" in 1985.
The punk movement expanded rapidly in the United Kingdom in 1976. At the time, Rose McDowall and Jill Bryson were classic Glasgow punks. As the punk rock scene electrified Glasgow in the late '70s, they were a part of the bohemian art scene who adored the New York Dolls and who followed Scottish punk band Nu-Sonics during their career. As friends, McDowall and Bryson socialized in Glasgow pubs, catching many local bands at the time. One of these bands was Orange Juice, fronted by Edwyn Collins. Those emerging from New Pop and Orange Juice had recorded a live version of "Felicity" as a flexi-disc and intended to release it. The fanzine was to be named after a James Kirk song, and was to be called "Strawberry Switchblade". The fanzine never materialized, however, and the flexi eventually appeared as an addition to the debut Postcard single "Falling and Laughing". The name Strawberry Switchblade became Rose and Jill's moniker as they began their career to pop stardom.
Strawberry Switchblade was originally signed to the independent record label Postcard Records. However, none of the band's recordings were ever released under this label. They were later signed to Zoo Records, another independent label. The band's first single, "Trees and Flowers", was released after they met Bill Drummond, a Scottish musician who went on to form The KLF. The single was released in July 1983, and sold over 10,000 copies. It was featured at number 47 in John Peel's 1983 Festive 50. "Trees and Flowers" was about agoraphobia, since band member Jill suffered from it.
Drummond signed the band to Warner Music Group subsidiary Korova in 1983. John Deacon began producing the band's first and only album. In 1985, their first single release on that label, "Since Yesterday", became a Top 10 hit in the UK, peaking at number 5, and met with success in Europe and Japan. The track's opening fanfare came from Sibelius' Symphony No.5 and had also featured on the earlier hit "Beach Baby" by The First Class. The girls' strikingly contrasting black and white wardrobe, including the polka dot rah-rah skirts worn for the sleeve of "Since Yesterday", attracted coverage at the time. Their somewhat 'gothic' appearance was also of note.
However, they attained little more than the unenviable title of one-hit wonders, when all subsequent releases to "Since Yesterday" failed to reach the Top 50 in the UK Singles Chart. In order to pay their tax bills, the band recorded two singles solely for the Japanese market. By early 1986, the group disbanded.
Their cover version of "Sunday Morning" (originally by Velvet Underground) was released as an extra track on the 12" of "Since Yesterday". It was not included on any of the Strawberry Switchblade albums.
In 2005, Warner Bros. Platinum Records released a career retrospective of the band, made up of sixteen different tracks from various recordings on one compact disc.
