Every year hundreds of Yellowstone National Park bison are shot and aggressively chased by helicopters and ATVs back into the park to prevent disease transmission to domestic cattle herds in Montana. Bison advocates believe the disease brucellosis is the primary stumbling block to restoring America’s last wild-bison population. Meanwhile, the ranching community believes the current management is the only way to protect their economic and cultural way of life from collapse. Silencing the Thunder takes a deeper look into the controversial management of Yellowstone National Park bison and questions whether this iconic species should be lethally managed to control the spread of brucellosis.

Man Attacked by Bison After Taking Up-Close Photo with His iPad
It seems people still aren’t learning to keep their distance from wild animals when shooting tourist snapshots. A man was attacked and seriously injured by a bison in Yellowstone National Park yesterday after he tried to take photos of it with his iPad from just 3 to 5 feet away.
A Yellowstone spokesperson says that the bison was lying the grass near a paved walkway near the famous Old Faithful Geyser. Several people surrounded the bison, and then man decided to step forward and shoot some up-close photos.
The Associated Press reports that the 62-year-old Australian was tossed several times into the air by the animal.
The National Park service recommends that people stay at least 25 yards away from bison, as they can weigh as much as a small car and run three times faster than humans. Bison and elk may seem friendly compared to bears and wolves, but they’re actually responsible for more attacks and injuries in Yellowstone than the latter.
In case you’re not convinced at how dangerous bison can be, here are a few eye-opening videos showing bisons charging people in Yellowstone:
his latest incident was actually the second photo-related bison attack in Yellowstone in the past month. Back on May 16th, a 16-year-old Taiwanese girl was gored by a bison after she tried to pose for a photo with it.

One of several theatrical trailers for the feature documentary, FACING THE STORM: STORY OF THE AMERICAN BISON. The documentary is the epic account of our tempestuous relationship with the iconic symbol of wild America. The American bison once dominated the plains of North America, numbering in the tens of millions. Native Plains Indians shared a sacred relationship with the species that went far beyond survival and sustenance. Then, in the nineteenth century, they were nearly eradicated from the continent, and an entire Plains culture was forever changed. FACING THE STORM recounts this harrowing history, and thoroughly explores the future of bison in the twenty-first century. It graphically exposes the annual slaughter of bison outside of Yellowstone National Park. Finally, the film explores the epic vision -- and monumental obstacles -- to restore bison to immense tracts of the Great Plains. This involves a dramatic transformation of how we understand the Great Plains - from a utilitarian worldview to a fully-functional ecosystem that combines a lost culture with modern science and innovative economies. FACING THE STORM shows us that the American bison is not just an icon of a lost world, but may very well show us the path to a more sustainable future. A Co-Production with The Independent Television Service (ITVS) & Montana Public Television.

Zach and Sarah draw two of Montana's hard to get Yellowstone Bison tags. Montana gives 50 of these tags out a year with over 10,100 applicants this year. These bison are free to roam in and out of Yellowstone Park. Zach and Sarah are able to locate a small group of large bulls hanging out not far from the park boundary. They are each able to take down monster bulls with Sarah's possibly making the trophy books.
