English as a second or foreign language is the use of English by speakers with different native languages. Instruction for English-language learners may be known as English as a second language (ESL), English as a foreign language (EFL), English as an additional language (EAL), or English for speakers of other languages (ESOL).
English as a second language (ESL) is often used for non-native English speakers learning English in a country where English is commonly spoken. English as a foreign language (EFL) is used for non-native English speakers learning English in a country where English is not commonly spoken. The term ESL has been misinterpreted by some to indicate that English would be of secondary importance. However, it simply refers to the order in which the language was learned, consistent with the linguistic terminology of second-language acquisition. The term ESL can be a misnomer for some students who have learned several languages before learning English. The terms English Language Learners (ELL), and more recently English Learners (EL), have been used instead, and the students’ home language and cultures are considered important.
A person's second language or L2, is a language that is not the native language of the speaker, but that is used in the locale of that person. In contrast, a foreign language is a language that is learned in an area where that language is not generally spoken. Some languages, often called auxiliary languages, are used primarily as second languages or lingua francas.
More informally, a second language can be said to be any language learned in addition to one's native language, especially in context of second language acquisition, (that is, learning a new foreign language).
A person's first language is not necessarily their dominant language, the one they use most or are most comfortable with. For example, the Canadian census defines first language for its purposes as "the first language learned in childhood and still spoken", recognizing that for some, the earliest language may be lost, a process known as language attrition. This can happen when young children move, with or without their family (because of immigration or international adoption), to a new language environment.
This is a very good episode that you might want to use in your classes. It might be adapted to different levels. Joey tries to impress a chick and because of that, he follows a beautiful woman into an English as a Second Language class and tries to impress her with his skills. It works beautifully until he becomes obsessed with being the best in the class. I don't own the rights to this video. Warner Bros. Entertainment ©2004-2012 Darcy Partridge Abridged.

When looking for service opportunities, Kerry Porter discovered that she could use her few spare hours during the week to teach English at a local refugee center. She was given a class of six students from all over the world who were very anxious to learn English. It was a difficult task since she couldn’t speak any of their native languages. But as she got to know the students and hear their stories, she realized how truly incredible each of them was. She met one man in particular whose story touched her. Basir was a police officer in Afghanistan who sustained a serious head injury that made it hard for him to remember things. He was relocated to the United States with his family, and he appreciates Kerry helping him learn English. Do you have experience teaching English as a second langu...

This video served as the video element in the June 21, 2009 Broomfield United Methodist Church sermon "Hands at Your Service" by Pastor Ken Brown, discussing 'learning' and how God uses it as an enabler, and to empower us to not only function in the world but to follow him as disciples. The video is about a group of volunteers who teach English as a second language (ESL) classes in Broomfield and Brighton, Colorado. Not speaking English can vastly impact one's ability to function in society, often leaving them with feels of isolation or lower self esteem. This video speaks to what ESL brings to a student and how this group of God inspired instructors get more out the class then even their students do. Fred Genesee gives the closing plenary at the 2008 Immersion Education Conference. Reading is fundamental to successful education. Reading competence is both an end in itself and a means to an end. A primary role of schools is to teach students how to read and, at the same time, learning to read serves academic development as students must read academic material in order to develop knowledge and competence in academic domains. In recent years, there has been substantial in research on reading acquisition in monolinguals and, as a result, our understanding of reading acquisition has advanced considerably. This has also brought with it implications for teaching reading. There have also been considerable advances in research on learning to read in a second language. This research has taken o...
