The Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium (沖縄美ら海水族館, Okinawa Churaumi Suizokukan) is located within the Ocean Expo Park in Okinawa, Japan. It welcomed its 20 millionth visitor on 30 March 2010 and is a member of the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums (JAZA). It was the largest aquarium in the world until it was surpassed by the Georgia Aquarium in 2005.
In 1975, the World's Exposition or World's Fair was held in Okinawa, Japan at the Ocean Expo Park. Afterward, the park began to lose tourism and it was believed that a new aquarium would help revive the area and celebrate Okinawa's marine tradition. The aquarium was designed by Yukifusa Kokuba and was opened on 1 November 2002.
"Churaumi" was selected as the name of the aquarium by public vote amongst Japanese people. "Chura" means "beautiful" or "graceful" in the Okinawan Japanese dialect, and "umi" means "ocean" in Japanese.
The aquarium is a part of the Ocean Expo Park located in Motobu, Okinawa. The aquarium is made up of four floors, with tanks containing deep sea creatures, sharks, coral and tropical fish. The aquarium is set on 19,000 m2 of land, with a total of 77 tanks containing 10,000 m3 of water. Water for the saltwater exhibits is pumped into the aquarium from a source 350 m offshore, 24 hours a day.
Okinawa Prefecture (Japanese: 沖縄県, Hepburn: Okinawa-ken, Okinawan: ウチナーチン Uchinaa-chin) is the southernmost prefecture of Japan. It comprises hundreds of the Ryukyu Islands in a chain over 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) long. The Ryukyus extend southwest from Kyushu (the southwesternmost of Japan's main four islands) to Taiwan. The Okinawa Prefecture encompasses the southern two thirds of that chain. Naha, Okinawa's capital, is located in the southern part of Okinawa Island.
The oldest evidence of human existence on the Ryukyu islands is from the Stone Age and was discovered in Naha and Yaese. Some human bone fragments from the Paleolithic era were unearthed, but there is no clear evidence of Paleolithic remains. Japanese Jōmon influences are dominant on the Okinawa Islands, although clay vessels on the Sakishima Islands have a commonality with those in Taiwan.
The first mention of the word Ryukyu was written in the Book of Sui. Okinawa was the Japanese word identifying the islands, first seen in the biography of Jianzhen, written in 779. Agricultural societies begun in the 8th century slowly developed until the 12th century. Since the islands are located at the eastern perimeter of the East China Sea relatively close to Japan, China and South-East Asia, the Ryukyu Kingdom became a prosperous trading nation. Also during this period, many Gusukus, similar to castles, were constructed. The Ryukyu Kingdom entered into the Imperial Chinese tributary system under the Ming dynasty beginning in the 15th century, which established economic relations between the two nations.
The Kuroshio (黒潮, , "くろしお", [ku͍ɽoɕio] "Black Tide", "Japan Current") is a north-flowing ocean current on the west side of the North Pacific Ocean. It is similar to the Gulf Stream in the North Atlantic and is part of the North Pacific ocean gyre. Like the Gulf stream, it is a strong western boundary current.
It begins off the east coast of Luzon, Philippines, Taiwan and flows northeastward past Japan, where it merges with the easterly drift of the North Pacific Current. It is analogous to the Gulf Stream in the Atlantic Ocean, transporting warm, tropical water northward toward the polar region. It is sometimes known as the Black Stream — the English translation of kuroshio and an allusion to the deep blue of its water — and also as the "Japan Current" (日本海流, Nihon Kairyū).
The path of Kuroshio south of Japan is reported every day. Its counterparts are the North Pacific Current to the north, the California Current to the east, and the North Equatorial Current to the south. The warm waters of the Kuroshio Current sustain the coral reefs of Japan, the northernmost coral reefs in the world. The branch into the Sea of Japan is called Tsushima Current (対馬海流, Tsushima Kairyū). The Japan Current is responsible for the mild weather experienced around Alaska's southern coast and in British Columbia.
An aquarium (plural: aquariums or aquaria) is a vivarium of any size having at least one transparent side in which water-dwelling plants or animals are kept and displayed. Fishkeepers use aquaria to keep fish, invertebrates, amphibians, aquatic reptiles such as turtles, and aquatic plants. The term, coined by English naturalist Philip Henry Gosse, combines the Latin root aqua, meaning water, with the suffix -arium, meaning "a place for relating to". The aquarium principle was fully developed in 1850 by the chemist Robert Warington, who explained that plants added to water in a container would give off enough oxygen to support animals, so long as their numbers do not grow too large. The aquarium craze was launched in early Victorian England by Gosse, who created and stocked the first public aquarium at the London Zoo in 1853, and published the first manual, The Aquarium: An Unveiling of the Wonders of the Deep Sea in 1854.
An aquarist owns fish or maintains an aquarium, typically constructed of glass or high-strength acrylic. Cuboid aquaria are also known as fish tanks or simply tanks, while bowl-shaped aquaria are also known as fish bowls. Size can range from a small glass bowl to immense public aquaria. Specialized equipment maintains appropriate water quality and other characteristics suitable for the aquarium's residents.
The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is a slow-moving filter feeding shark and the largest known extant fish species. The largest confirmed individual had a length of 12.65 m (41.5 ft) and a weight of about 21.5 t (47,000 lb), and unconfirmed reports of considerably larger whale sharks exist. Claims of individuals over 14 m (46 ft) long and weighing at least 30 t (66,000 lb) are not uncommon. The whale shark holds many records for sheer size in the animal kingdom, most notably being by far the largest living nonmammalian vertebrate. It is the sole member of the genus Rhincodon and the family, Rhincodontidae (called Rhiniodon and Rhinodontidae before 1984), which belongs to the subclass Elasmobranchii in the class Chondrichthyes. The species originated about 60 million years ago.
The whale shark is found in open waters of the tropical oceans and is rarely found in water below 22 °C (72 °F). Modeling suggests a lifespan of about 70 years but measurements have proven difficult. Whale sharks have very large mouths and are filter feeders, which is a feeding mode that occurs in only two other sharks, the megamouth shark and the basking shark. They feed almost exclusively on plankton and therefore, are completely harmless to humans.

This video highlights our visit to the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium in Okinawa, Japan. I’ve been to a bunch of public aquariums, and the okinawa aquarium certainly holds its own as one of the best. Obviously the sheer size of it is impressive, but the quality of the individual displays is top notch. The signature display is called the kuroshio sea. It measures 115 ft long, 89 ft wide, and 33 ft deep. For those keeping score at home, that is just shy of 2 million gallons of water. The acrylic panel you see here is 74 ft by 27 ft and is 2 ft. thick. This is a longish view of the central tank (the Kuroshio Sea) at the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium. It is longish in the fact I was mesmerized by it. I hope you enjoy it and find it as relaxing as I did. Today was the day we achieved the whole purpose of the side trip to Okinawa, visiting the Churaumi Aquarium. This was the largest aquarium in the world until 2005, so it’s a pretty awesome place, but first… We had to drive there. This was the first time I'd ever driven overseas before, and to say that Kathryn was apprehensive, is a bit like saying that Apollo suffered a bit of bother. While she was giving out the nervous vibe, I was pretty excited. In reality, driving in Japan is the same as driving in New Zealand. You drive on the left, all the cars in New Zealand are from Japan, and with GPS, you can’t really get lost. So I only got lost once. Took the wrong turn. The GPS tells you about five times about the turn, and I took one turn one traffic light too early. No dramas. Kathryn was...

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium See multiple whale sharks in captivity at one of the world's largest aquariums “Churaumi” means “clear, beautiful seas” in the Okinawa language. Under the catch phrase “The Mysteries of Okinawa in Living Color,” Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium opened its doors as one of the world’s largest aquariums in August 2002 inside the Okinawa Commemorative National Government Park located in the northwest area of Okinawa Island.
Ocean Expo Park, Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium uses the DRX-Revolution to capture x-rays of its animals because it can be used to expose continuous radiographic images of dolphins, for example, without having to place and change the cassettes under them each time. Boredom always lurks within strange places
But still I find a way to feed my mind
The worlds collide beyond those spaces
I'm never sure of what goes on inside
If I apologize for every crutch I've used
I guess I never would have walked inside those shoes
Be hold the world that I've been shaping
I never said that I'd belong
In other words have I been flaking
Don't you know what I would have done
If I apologize for every crutch I've used
I guess I never would have worked inside those shoes
So let me down, down, down, let it bubble all around me
Always something else to do, let me down, down, down
Let the shallowness surround me, let me drown in it
From the tint of my eyes I can see the world
Spinning like a girl never satisfied
And though it's plain to see, you don't exist for me
Don't believe every word that they say
So let me down, down, down, let it bubble all around me
Always something else to prove, let me down, down, down
Let the shallowness surround me, let me drown in it
A part of my mind never wonders still
Why it's close at hand? It's never out of sight
And though it's part of me, you're never going to see
Don't believe every word that they say
