From time to time, I decide to comb through my various e-mail accounts as well as my desktop and external hard drives looking for old conversations with my late friend Ibne Hasan. At this point – almost four years after his passing – I have probably discovered almost everything I have left, with much of our old conversation threads being lost due to my hard drive crash in 2011 and the necessity to regularly update e-mail clients and clean out mailboxes for the sake of storage.

But when someone is gone forever, a fragment from a bygone, otherwise mundane conversation becomes precious. Such is the case with a recent e-mail thread I found in the “sent items” mailbox of one of my oldest e-mail accounts. Hasan’s patient and insightful replies to my questions regarding Indian film and music from a 2010 conversation thread are presented below for posterity, along with with contextual explanations in italics.

I will also add this thread to the memorial page I established for Ibne Hasan for posterity.

While he had not seen it, he expressed a willingness to watch it and have a discussion. Hasan also shared about about his collection of rare music.

I have not watched the film Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (Who/What I Am For You). This film was released one or two years back and I have not watched it. I have been collecting Indian film and classical music and the number of songs has reached almost 13 thousand. The collection is mostly from 1932 to 1956.

Indeed, Hasan had sent me a huge cache of CDs the previous year and I reminded this of him, asking if I could make copies and share them with someone who had recently opened a new Indian and Pakistani grocery store near my home. Hasan’s generosity was resoundingly clear in his response.

I have never refused copies of DVDs to any one who has some interest in such stuff. You may give copies to any person. The collection has many rare songs which are not available on the internet. These were recorded from 78 RPMs.Yes, you may write your comments on the film. If possible send me an email.

Hasan later read my review of Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! and decided to seek out a copy for himself so we could compare notes. He also expressed some curiosity regarding my interest in Indian music, noting that I could neither speak nor understand Hindi or any of the other languages of the region. I had hoped he would expound on the matter of his comments regarding “pure music,” but I do not recall ever having that conversation in detail.

…I read your comments. I will procure a copy of the film and watch it. Because of my “notoriously classical bent of mind” it is a hard job to watch modern Indian movies. I watch a film only for its music.

India did produce some good films in the past. Some critics say India produced only two good actors in the past: Motilal and Balraj Sahani. It is very difficult to procure the films in which Motilal acted but some of Balraj are easily available.

India produced good music during the years from 1940 to 1955; after that most of the stuff is rubbish. India also gave some great classical singer. Some of the names are: Omkarnath Thakur, Narayanrao Vayas, Vinayakrao Patwardhan. You can get some songs of these singers on the internet.

My question should be: when you do not understand the language, what is it in these films that interests you? You do not understand the language of the songs. So do you find the tune itself absorbing? I am myself a believer in “pure music.” I mean that music does not need the help of words to create the effect or the mood of the melody/tune. Indian classical music proves this point as words are absolutely of no value in it.

I can’t remember if Hasan ever actually procured a copy of Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! and if we had any further discussion about the movie, our correspondence about that subject has vanished into the ether of the Internet forever. Based on the opinions he shared about contemporary films and music, I would gess that he probably would not have appreciated the movie regardless of the fact that it was one of the most successful films in Bollywood history.

We had also talked in passing about discussing a 2005 biopic about Subhas Chandra Bose but we never got around to that as we both has many projects to tackle, both individually and together through our work for the Marxists Internet Archive.

The Red Army in Vienna

A friend who recently traveled to Vienna, Austria sent me some photos he took of the city’s monuments to the Red Army. The main monument (depicted in the bottom two photos) is the Heldendenkmal der Roten Armee, which serves as a memorial to the 17,000 Red Army soldiers who died during the Battle of Vienna. The aforementioned battle began on April 2, 1945 when the Soviets approached from the south, and ended on April 13 with the defeat and withdrawal of German forces.

Joseph Stalin noted the Red Army’s victory in “Order of the Day, No. 334,” Issued on April 13, 1945.

TROOPS of the 3rd Ukrainian Front, with the support of troops of the 2nd Ukrainian Front, after stiff street-fighting to-day, April 13, captured the capital of Austria, the city of Vienna, a strategically important centre of the German defences covering the routes to the southern areas of Germany.

Tank army, took prisoner more than 130,000 enemy officers and men, and destroyed or captured 1,345 tanks and self-propelled guns, 2,250 field-guns and much other military equipment.

Ephemera as art and history

Here’s a recent acquisition for my collection of interesting ephemera. I scored it from an online seller and although I didn’t know much about it when I purchased the item, I have learned a bit through some research.

On the back of the post card are the words “Union Postale Universelle” (Universal Postal Union, which is the name of an organization that fosters international postal cooperation.

A Russian-language site suggests that the postcard was produced in 1906 and features an allegorical depiction of a May Day celebration in front of the altar of human freedom. Another site suggests the postcard was a issued in honor of the State Duma, which was dissolved in 1917.

On the banner, the words read “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity.”

The pedestal features the words “Of Mankind” in German, an image of Karl Marx with his name in Russian on either side (and in German within the circular image). A form of the word “humanity” appears in Russian at the bottom of the pedestal.

At the very bottom of the picture is the inscription “1 May – Proletarian holiday.”

Guilty Pleasures: The Stories, Songs and Symbols of Roderick Taylor’s “Otherworld”

One might effectively argue that there weren’t many good shows on television back in the mid-1980s. At any rate, there certainly weren’t as many shows on TV then as there are today. And because I was only 12 years old at the time, I was easily impressed. I guess that explains my nostalgia for shows like the lip-sync game show Puttin’ on the Hits and the Don Adams sitcom Check it Out. Anyway, despite the fact that I only saw a handful of episodes of Otherworld during the show’s original run, it stuck with me for a long time and I was really excited a few years ago when I discovered that the entire series had been uploaded to YouTube. I watched them all (in order) shortly after finding them and I still found the show to be very entertaining. In fact, I was so enthusiastic regarding my rediscovery of Otherworld so much that I even procured a DVD set featuring the show’s entire run and I watch still watch the show on a fairly regular basis.

The Sterling family

Sounds pretty simple, right? It’s a unique show that I appreciate mostly because of the nostalgia surrounding it but also because I’m a lifelong fan of comics and the science fiction genre. But It’s a guilty pleasure, nonetheless. My conflicted feelings regarding my gratuitous enjoyment of the show stem almost completely from the unmistakable political undertones that permeate every episode. Otherworld was a product of its time—and that time was the very pinnacle of Ronald Reagan’s role in the Cold War.

It’s worth pausing here to note a little about the show’s creator, Roderick Taylor. His biography for Bumbershoot Productions, Inc. describes Taylot as “an artist with notable accomplishments in literature, music, film and television.” Better known to some fans as Roderick Falconer, Taylor was a moderately successful recording artist back in the 1970s and early 1980s. As a recording artist, Taylor appeared to embrace the same kind of Randian-styled rugged individualism that influenced Rush when they penned their epic concept album 2112. Actually, Taylor took it just a bit further and even went to far as to employ a bit of fascist imagery on the cover of his 1976 album New Nation. A December 1976 review of the LP harangued the album as “a package wrapped in crypto-fascist overtones.”

“I feel I represent austerity, discipline, order, power, and purity, and I wanted a graphic representation of those things,” Taylor explained to the interviewer. “Maybe I believed that’s what people wanted. Then again, I’m such a powerful ego to myself that I believe that’s what people wanted anyway. A statement that’s pure.”

To be sure, history has generally proven that mixing politics with the notion of “purity” isn’t exactly in the best interests of humanity. Later in the same review is quoted as declaring that his follow up to New Nation would “synthesize” Nazi Germany’s infamous Nuremburg Rally with the 1933 American musical Footlight Parade.

Taylor continued employing fascist-themed imagery in his more recent digital releases, using a Nordic crest as the “cover art” for his Roderick Taylor Falconer collection. For Roderick Taylor Falconer II, he channeled Lani Riefenstahl’s 1935 film Triumph of the Will

His regrettable sources of inspiration aside, Taylor’s music isn’t the least bit hard on the ears. In fact, much of it is quite good, particularly the above-noted New Nation as well as the platter that followed, Victory in Rock City. His recording work spanned a number of genres, from folk to glam to radio-friendly pop. Moreover, there’s a good deal of overlap with Taylor’s music career and his work on Otherworld. More on that later.

Otherworld debuted on CBS in January 1985. As noted above, the series only lasted eight episodes. The show told the story of the Sterling family, who accidentally passed through an inter-dimensional portal while on vacation in Egypt. The five family members—Hal, June, Trace, Gina and Smith—end up in a dystopia that features elements of ancient mysticism and futuristic technology. The primary story arc chronicled the Sterlings’ attempt to return back to their world. Shortly after they land in the strange dimension, they run afoul of high-ranking Zone Trooper Nuveen Kroll who tries to arrest them all. After a scuffle with Hal, Kroll is KO’ed and the Sterlings take off with his car and an important crystal that serves as Kroll’s means of accessing important computer systems. This sets up one of the main, ongoing plot lines for the series, as Kroll relentlessly pursues the Sterlings as they travel through different “zones” in the world hoping to reach the capital province of Imar so they can return home. Incidentally that Nuveen Krool was played by Jonathan Banks who won critical acclaim decades later in his role as Mike Ehrmantraut in Breaking Bad.

Another story arc in Otherworld was the Sterling family’s ongoing struggle against the totalitarian social order throughout all of the lands they visit in the strange dimension. The political climate of Otherworld largely reflected America’s view of the USSR, featuring themes and conditions that upheld collectivism and rejected individuality. For example, in the first episode of the series—named “Rules of Attraction,” (also the title of Rod Taylor’s 1984 album)—an android couple hails the guiding principles of Imar, offering a quote from one of their most important texts: “What you need, you have to make.” It’s a rather clear parody of one of the most famous passages written by Karl Marx, “From each according to his needs, to each according to his ability.” In the fourth episode, entitled “Rock and Roll Suicide,” teenagers Trace and Gina lament their expulsion from school with Gina explaining that they paid a price because they “resisted the pressure to become mediocre,” echoing the deeply held beliefs of social conservatives that communism suppresses creativity and innovation. I’d even go so far to say that the province of Tarka (as depicted in the opening scene of episode two, “The Zone Troopers Build Men”) is based on Soviet-era Ukraine…but maybe I’m reading too much into things (Probably not, though). These examples are but a small sample of the prevailing ideological message of Otherworld. Gender relationships, militarism, and popular culture also receive heavy critique through the series.

It’s not just Roderick Taylor’s philosophy and music that figure prominently in Otherworld. He makes a cameo in every episode, as well. At least he as a sense of humor about it, though. In the episode entitled “I Am Woman, Hear Me Roar,” a gaggle of young women ogle a flyer featuring what appears to be a PR photo of Taylor along with the caption, “My name is Rod, and I like to sing and eat.”

Taylor also infused his recording work into Otherworld. A handful of his songs appear in the “Rock and Roll Suicide” episode, including “Only So Much Time,” “Rock and Roll Will Never Die,” and “Rock City.” The episode also includes original material that Taylor composed with occasional Kiss collaborator Mikel Japp.

For whatever reason, Rod Taylor’s formula for Otherworld still works for me. I never forgot the show after only seeing the original episodes one time, decades ago. And despite Taylor’s philosophical foibles and the decidedly dated flavor of Taylor’s vision of the far-flung future, Otherworld remains in heavy rotation in my present-day viewing habits. “The Zone Troopers Build Men” and Rock and Roll Suicide” are probably my favorite episodes of the lot but looking around online, I’ve read that there are five more installments that were never aired. It’s unlikely that a renaissance of ’80s sci-fi will happen anytime in the near future but Otherworld has been re-aired on SyFy within the past several years, so maybe at some point, CBS (or whoever owns that material these days) will open up the vault and provide fans with some newer material as a reward for our collective patience.

Over the past few weeks (well, months, actually…) I’ve been slowly transcribing a rare booklet featuring a paper written by Nexhmije Hoxha entitled “Some Fundamental Questions of the Revolutionary Policy of the Party of Labor of Albania About the Development of the Class Struggle.” The paper was originally delivered by Hoxha at a meeting on June 27, 1977 and later published by The “8 Nëntori” Publishing House. At that time,Nexhmije Hoxha was the Director of Marxist-Leninist Studies at the Central Committee of the Party of Labor of Albania. Once I have transcribed the entire text and added in all necessary references, the document will be posted on the Marxists Internet Archive as the cornerstone of a new English-language Nexhmije Hoxha Internet Archive.

One particularly interesting portion of the paper provides some insight into Marxist-Leninist perspectives on incarceration and capital punishment. Having some familiarity with the field of penology through my own academic and professional experiences, I found her writing to be noteworthy with regard to its specificity, as she touches on matters related to both theory and practice.

Along with the work of historians such as Bill Bland—who touched on matters concerning the USSR’s penal system in his 1999 work “Stalin: The Myth and the Reality“—and academic studies that appropriately juxtapose the draconian Tsarist-era prisons with the comparative reforms of the Soviet system, Nexhmije Hoxha’s work offers an added dimension to the larger questions regarding crime and justice under socialism.

The Socialist State Is The Most Powerful Weapon Of The Class Struggle.

The socialist state remains the state of the dictatorship of the proletariat until communism. The “theories” of the Titoites about the “withering away of the state” already, as well as the “theories” of the Khrushchevite revisionists about “the state of the entire people”, are nothing but “theories” of the dying out of the class struggle, of the rejection of the dictatorship of the proletariat. Lenin stressed that in order to go on to communism the dictatorship of the proletariat must be strengthened and not weakened. Our Party of Labour has always followed these immortal teachings.

The dictatorship of the proletariat is the most powerful weapon of the class struggle in the hands of the working class and its party. To wage the class struggle correctly, it is important not only to accept that the socialist state, even after the elimination of the exploiting classes, for the entire period of transition to communism, remains the state of the dictatorship of the proletariat, but also to define the functions of this stale for the entire period correctly on a class basis.

At the 4th Congress of the PLA, when the building of economic bases of socialism in town and countryside and the entry into a new stage, that of the complete construction of the socialist society, was announced, the Party made it clear that also in this stage the function of repression of the socialist state, along with the function of the defence of the Homeland, remained always “very important functions.”

At the same time, the economic-organizational and cultural-educative role, Which our proletarian state began to perform when it was set up, with the construction of the economic base of socialism deepened and extended further in the sphere of the activity of the socialist state.

But with this the importance of the function of repression did not lower. As long as the antagonistic contradictions and the fierce class struggle between us and the enemies, between the socialist road and the capitalist road exist, the function of repression of the socialist state is neither eliminated, nor passes on a second plane.

Every function of the state of the dictatorship of the proletariat has its great importance. Its functions of organization and management of the economy and culture, education, suppression of the hostile and criminal activity, of the defence of the Homeland from the external enemy are exerted in unity, fulfils one another.

Overestimation or underestimation of the one function of the state to the detriment of the other has dangerous consequences. Underestimation of the function of repression or defence leads to the slackening of revolutionary vigilance and weakening of the class struggle against internal and external enemies. Underestimation of the economic organizational and cultural-educative function also has catastrophic consequences for the complete construction of socialist society.

The dictatorship of the proletariat uses violence for the destruction of the old society and the construction of the new socialist society, despite the resistance put up by the enemies (it acted in this way in the liquidation of the economic base of the big land proprietors, foreign and local capitalists, etc.).

Thus, we have the universal use of violence as a means of the class struggle to settle the issues of the revolution, while the level and forms of the violence depend on the level of the resistance of the enemies. Lenin has stressed, “The greater the extremes of the exploiters’ resistance, the more vigorously, firmly, ruthlessly and successfully will they be suppressed…* Hence, the level, forms and severity of the violence of the suppression, depend on the resistance and activity of the enemies, but not the universal use of violence.

The differentiated stand in waging the class struggle is also one of the essential elements of the revolutionary method of waging the class struggle. Our Party and the socialist state have always applied a differentiated class policy.

Differentiation is made not only between kulaks, elements of the former exploiting classes in general, anti-party elements, on the one hand, and their offspring in the other, but also between the enemies themselves. In conformity with the degree of culpability and the social danger they represent, one is left at large but kept under control, the other is imprisoned, one is sentenced to 2-3 years, another to 10 or 20 years, while still another is shot.

It is in our interests to have the minimum number of enemies, therefore efforts are made for their re-education, both when they are in prison and when they are not, nevertheless the control, vigilance must never be slackened.

The question arises: Can it be said that the function of suppression is reduced parallel with the strengthening of the revolutionary education of the masses? This is linked with and dependent on the development of the class struggle in socialism.

The function of suppression has to do less with the actual number of enemies within the country, than with the great danger threatening the dictatorship of the proletariat and our socialist country from the internal and external enemies who are always linked in collaboration against us, as well as from liberalism, bureaucracy, and bourgeois-revisionist degeneration, when those are not combated directly and continuously.

Practice has proved that during the process of the development of the revolution, and the socialist construction, while one bunch of internal enemies are being eliminated or destroyed, other new enemies are emerging. If the class struggle is not waged correctly, hostile strata may emerge from individual enemies, reaching the point of the creation of a class of bourgeois enemies as occurred in the Soviet Union.

Therefore the dictatorship of the proletariat always keeps its weapons sharp and ready to suppress the enemies.

Lessons from the Old School: A Look Back with “Leaping” Lanny Poffo

LANNYPOTDMy first-ever “serious” article about pro wrestling was written on a dare by someone who was, at that time, the top-ranked wrestling writer on a sports website that specialized in publishing user-generated content. I took that particular opportunity to wax philosophical about my longstanding appreciation for pro wrestling and added “Q & A” style e-mail interview with one of my childhood favorites, “Leaping” Lanny Poffo. Much to my surprise, the article was voted “Pick of the Day” for the entire site (I even grabbed a screen shot of that distinction for posterity) and less than a year later—after attempting to launch my own wrestling site with a handful of friends—I ended up landing the dream gig of anybody who has ever written about the sport, a spot with Pro Wrestling Illustrated.

I met Lanny in person a few years later at an independent show in Chicago but I am not sure if I actually thanked him for helping to launch my writing “career.” But Lanny and I did collaborate again on an article for PWI a few years later following the tragic death of his brother Randy Savage. In 2011, Randy was the posthumous recipient of PWI’s Stanley Weston Lifetime Achievement Award and Lanny graciously provided me with some pleasant reminscences to include in the write-up. It was a surreal experience to have grown up watching Lanny and Randy and then have the honor of penning such a noteworthy piece.

Looking back at the article below, it’s amazing to think that it all started with this…

Part One: Love for the “Old School”

Over the course of last few years, I have finally come to the realization that no matter how old I get, I will never outgrow my love for professional wrestling. Like most longtime fans, I became hooked as a kid and my interest lasted well into my teenage years. As a young adult, my attention shifted to more important things. I got married, landed a real job, started a family, and pursued some post-college studies as well as some other endeavors. I pretty much missed out on most of the “Attitude Era” and the original ECW promotion but then again, I was having a pretty good time doing some grown-up things during those years.

Somewhere along the way to my new life as a responsible adult, I got sucked back in to the world of wrestling. My enthusiasm for the spectacle of pro wrestling came back stronger than ever several years ago and ever since then, I’ve been almost powerless to fight it. It’s like I’ve been caught in a mental hammerlock of sorts. So here I am, a grown man with children of my own and I’m watching hours and hours of wrestling every week, buying action figures and DVDs, and reading news and gossip on Internet wrestling forums.

I think I realized wrestling had become an obsession for me the day I heard my two young daughters trying to sing Rey Mysterio’s theme song. The funny thing of it was that they couldn’t figure out the line “Booyaka, booyaka, 6-1-9” and it somehow came out as “Hoolika, hoolika, one State Farm…” That’s the truth, folks. Funny stuff, indeed.

Anyway, I am certainly enjoying some aspects of today’s pro wrestling scene and I have spent a few years getting caught up on what I missed in the mid to late 1990s. However, there’s a big part of me that longs for the “good old days” when pro wrestling was still considered to be a sport and the rule of something called “kayfabe” still prevailed. I miss the decidedly low-tech entrances, the full-on shoot-style promos and the smash-mouth, in-your-face style of the local organizations and the regional territories. I’m talking about the “old school,” people.

When I was about 10 years old, my family moved to central Kentucky. Up to that point, I was largely unfamiliar with pro wrestling. I think my dad had taken my older brother and me to a live event at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia a few years earlier, but this was a special occasion. We hadn’t really seen wrestling on a regular basis on television before then. I vaguely recall that Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka and Andre the Giant were on the card that night, but I was too young to appreciate it all. That would all change a few years later.

Central Kentucky was a hotbed of pro wrestling activity in the early 1980s. The two dominant promotions in the area were Jerry Lawler’s Championship Wrestling out of Memphis, Tennessee and Angelo Poffo’s International Championship Wrestling (ICW). My brother and I picked up on the action pretty quickly. I’m almost positive that the first televised wrestling show I ever saw was an episode of ICW in which “Pistol” Pez Whatley had to wear a mop on his head as a consequence for losing a big match. The studio audience kept chanting “Mop head! Mop head! Mop head!” at Pez and the louder they yelled, the angrier he became, stamping his feet and swinging the mop around on his head. It is fair to say that with this episode, my youthful curiosity was piqued. I was completely and utterly hooked.

Lawler’s Championship Wrestling was a great show, but it was ICW that really captivated me. In fact, some of the kids in our neighborhood started calling me “ICW” because I talked so much about the show (and also probably because they never bothered to learn my real name).

ICW was an exciting show with a brilliant talent roster. “Macho Man” Randy Savage, the son of Angelo Poffo, was one of the biggest stars to come out of the promotion, but in its heyday, ICW featured an impressive collection of seasoned veterans and rising stars. Ox Baker, Ronnie Garvin, “Iron” Mike Sharp, “Cowboy” Bob Orton, The Great Kabuki and Elizabeth Hulette (Miss Elizabeth) all worked in ICW at one time or another.

“Leaping” Lanny Poffo, also the son of promoter Angelo Poffo, was another prominent “main eventer” for ICW. Although Lanny is probably best known for his run in the WWF as the poetic professor “The Genius,” he spent a number of years at the top of the card on television shows and at packed venues throughout Kentucky, Tennessee, and other southern states.

Lanny established himself as a dynamic athlete and performer during his years with ICW. His expertise as a technical wrestler and his unique acrobatic abilities made it possible for Lanny to hold his own with some of the larger wrestlers and legendary talents of the day.

His cerebral approach to promotional spots made his microphone work seem more like legitimate theater and less like the vitriolic tirades that are most commonly associated with “sports entertainment.”

Lanny was one of the most popular babyface wrestlers on the ICW roster for the better part of the promotion’s existence. When ICW folded in 1984, Lanny and his brother Randy Savage went to Championship Wrestling. Managed by the villainous Tux Newman, they wrought havoc throughout the promotion, engaging in long and bloody feuds with the region’s biggest talents, including Jerry Lawler and the legendary Fabulous Ones.

Part Two: Reminiscing with Lanny Poffo

As a young wrestling fan, I was absolutely thrilled to follow Lanny’s exploits week after week, and I followed his career with great interest for many years. I recently caught up with Lanny through his official website and asked him to spend a few moments reflecting on his early days with ICW and Championship Wrestling. He was kind enough to answer a some questions via e-mail for this article.

M: Lanny, these days it seems that a lot of wrestling historians like to refer to International Championship Wrestling as an “outlaw” promotion. Of course, this has a lot to do with the fact that ICW was not affiliated with NWA, but in your opinion was there anything else that made the promotion stand out from those of the neighboring territories?

Lanny: The word outlaw implies that running a rival wrestling promotion is illegal. The NWA was an attempt at a monopoly which is illegal. Most of those promoters died broke anyway. Crime doesn’t pay.

M: By some accounts, the ICW roster was prone to letting fights spill over out of the ring. I have even read accounts of real life run-ins and parking lot brawls with wrestlers from the Memphis Championship Wrestling promotion. What was the ICW locker room like during the heyday of the promotion?

Lanny: I was in the babyface locker room. We had Ronnie Garvin, Bob Roop, George Weingeroff, El Bracero, Rick McCord, and others. Our locker room was very happy. Those guys had personality.

M: One of my favorite memories of ICW was your epic feud with “Hustler” Rip Rogers. The buildup to the steel cage, hair vs. hair match at Rupp Arena was tremendous. As you likely recall, your match was the second main event for the evening with the first main event being a bloody cage match between Ratamyas and Randy Savage. To my mind, this was the peak of your run with ICW. What are your reflections on being in the main event that night and was this the pinnacle of your success with ICW or were there other moments that you think were more important?

Lanny: According to Mick Foley’s book, Rip Rogers was the best worker who never made it. That was true. Rip Rogers was a great athlete and a great worker. He never made it because he was too weird even for this business. That’s a quote from his book. I agree.

Rupp Arena has a lot of prestige. It also has a lot of expenses. It’s a beautiful building but I’m only interested in the bottom line. We did better when we wrestled in Henry Clay High School and let their boosters club sell tickets. That may not seem quite as glamorous, but profits are better than losses when you’re living in the real world.

M: When you moved to Championship Wrestling, you adjusted quickly to a “heel” role. I remember one particular promo in which you wore a suit of armor and stood on a hillside reciting a funny poem about Jerry Lawler. When I go back now and look at footage from your Memphis years, it seems as though you were laying the groundwork for the “Genius” character you portrayed during your run in the WWF. How different was the creative process in the territories compared to your time in the WWF?

Lanny: Not being ugly or crazy looking was a handicap as a heel. I had to go for outlandish ideas.

M: Did the poetry that you wrote come naturally or was it difficult to come up with new and interesting verses week after week? How was it that you came upon the poetic side of your in-ring persona?

Lanny: I met Shel Silverstein twice in my life. He inspired me to write. In the WWF, I had a handicap named chief Jay Strongbow. He knew who I was going to wrestle on TV but never let me know in advance so I could have more time to write a better poem. When I asked him about this he said. “I don’t like your gimmick!” It wasn’t a gimmick. It was real. His name is Joe Scarpa. He’s Italian. He’s not an Indian. that is a gimmick.

M: Your in-ring style has always involved an intriguing mixture of traditional wrestling holds and fast-paced acrobatics. This really helped you to stand out in territories that favored mat-oriented grappling and smash-mouth brawling. How do you think the “Leaping Lanny” character would fare against today’s high flying superstars like Rey Mysterio?

Lanny: In no way do I consider myself the talent that Rey Mysterio is. The bar has been raised. I’m from the ’80s. He’s the man.

M: On your official website, you discuss your recent endeavors, including your work as a motivational speaker and an author. Would you care to share a bit more regarding your post-wrestling endeavors?

Lanny: I have a tuxedo and love to speak. I’m in my element. It’s my way to make a difference.

M: Thanks very much for taking the time to reminisce with a dedicated fan. Your unique contributions to the spectacle of professional wrestling have given many of us some terrific memories. I wish you the best of luck in all that lies ahead.
