Palenque (Bàak' in Modern Maya) was a Maya city state in southern Mexico that flourished in the 7th century. The Palenque ruins date back to 226 BC to its fall around 1123 AD. After its decline it was absorbed into the jungle, which is made up of cedar, mahogany, and sapodilla trees, but has been excavated and restored and is now a famous archaeological site attracting thousands of visitors. It is located near the Usumacinta River in the Mexican state of Chiapas, located about 130 km (81 mi) south of Ciudad del Carmen (see map) about 150 m (164 yd) above sea-level. It stays at a humid 26°C (79°F) with roughly 2160 mm (85 in) of rain a year.
Palenque is a medium-sized site, much smaller than such huge sites as Tikal or Copán, but it contains some of the finest architecture, sculpture, roof comb and bas-relief carvings that the Mayas produced. Much of the history of Palenque has been reconstructed from reading the hieroglyphic inscriptions on the many monuments; historians now have a long sequence of the ruling dynasty of Palenque in the 5th century and extensive knowledge of the city-state's rivalry with other states such as Calakmul and Toniná. The most famous ruler of Palenque was Pacal the Great whose tomb has been found and excavated in the Temple of the Inscriptions.

Carlos Palenque Avilés (La Paz 28 de junio 1944 - La Paz 8 de marzo de 1997), conocido por sus espectadores como el Compadre, fue un cantante, músico, empresario, comunicador social, presentador de televisión y político boliviano. Producto de un infarto cardiaco, Carlos Palenque fallece el 8 de marzo de 1997, el mismo año que postulaba a la presidencia. Esto causó tristeza entre sus seguidores, y cuando ese mismo año se hizo pública la separación y el divorcio de su esposa se inició la controversia que condujo a la desintegración. Ya fallecido su cuerpo fue velado en la Alcaldía de la ciudad de La Paz y la ciudad de El Alto donde gran cantidad de personas fueron a despedirse del Compadre para más tarde lo acompañarlo en millares hasta su última morada. Carlos Palenque Avilés (La Paz 28 de junio 1944 - La Paz 8 de marzo de 1997), conocido por sus espectadores como el Compadre, fue un cantante, músico, empresario, comunicador social, presentador de televisión y político boliviano.
Producto de un infarto cardiaco, Carlos Palenque fallece el 8 de marzo de 1997, el mismo año que postulaba a la presidencia. Esto causó tristeza entre sus seguidores, y cuando ese mismo año se hizo pública la separación y el divorcio de su esposa se inició la controversia que condujo a la desintegración. Ya fallecido su cuerpo fue velado en la Alcaldía de la ciudad de La Paz y la ciudad de El Alto donde gran cantidad de personas fueron a despedirse del Compadre para más tarde lo acompañarlo en millares hasta su última morada. Años más tarde el programa de televisión continuó, esta vez con Pepe Murillo y su viuda Mónica Medina, junto a otros componentes, pero sin Adolfo Paco ni Remedios Loza.
LEGADO:
La muerte de Palenque significó la pérdida de influencia de CONDEPA en El Alto, cercano a La Paz, e inició su crepúsculo. Luego del fallecimiento abrupto del caudillo, CONDEPA se dividió en dos grupos, uno dirigido por Remedios Loza, conocida como 'Cholita Remedios', y otro por la hija de Palenque, Veronica Palenque. CONDEPA actualmente desapareció de la escena política, pero es reconocido como el instrumento político que permitió la participación posterior del grupo indígena.

The monumental architectural character of this pyramid-like temple is typical of the ancient building style of the legendary Mayan people. In contrast to other Mayan towns in the central Mexican lowland, the buildings in Palenque are well built and decorated with bright stones. The colours of the surrounding rainforest are a picturesque setting for these splendid structures. In 1952 a Mexican archaeologist discovered a deep shaft that led him to an underground crypt that contained the stone sarcophagus of King Pacal. The face of the sovereign was covered with a jade mask and many other jade figures surrounded his body. Today, the beautiful carved lid of the sarcophagus is on public view in the crypt. Wide, raised steps lead to the most important construction area in Palenque, The Great Palace, that was built during the 7th and 8th centuries. The palace area was not just an embellishment as numerous living and bathing rooms attest to the fact that the daily life of the monarchy also took place here. Palenque is one of the most beautiful Mayan towns in Mexico. In 1994, after discovering another sarcophagus, excavations were extended over the entire area. We had to set off early for Palenque to avoid traffic jams caused by armed union activists who had blocked roads to demand "contributions" to their strike fund. En route we stopped at Aqua Azul and Cascadas de Miso-ha waterfalls. We swam and were able to walk behind the second waterfall. Our choice for the options available for the day was a visit to the archeological site at Pelenque where our guide gave us some more insights into the Mayan world. The Palenque site is unusual for the burial chamber under the pyramid of the inscription and the collection of interconnecting buildings called The Palace, the comb like constructions on the temple of the sun and the temple of the cross. It is also interesting to see where the jungle has grown back over other temples such as the Groupo Norte and the Complex of the Bats. We then travelled to Merida by bus. We opted for the trip to Acanceh with its pyramid beside the modern main square and then on to a ruined sisal hacienda Chunkanan. We viewed Merida's "Posh" district Paseo de Monjejo and watched some typical Yucatan music and dance. The following day we set off for Playa del Carmen via the huge Mayan site Chichen Itza with its central pyramid "El Castillo" and ball courts. We had a swim in the amazing Il Kil centoe before reaching Playa del Carmen with it's Caribbean night life for our final dinner.

One of the most successful of these cities was Palenque - which became the dominant center in its region. The setting here is incomparable
and the first glimpse of this mystical place is sure to stir deep and profound feelings.

finely laid out palace and great ceremonial center are exquisitely adorned with sculpted stones
and covered everywhere with hieroglyphic inscriptions. Imagine these buildings as they once were
decorated entirely with brightly colored paint
and roofed with palm thatch.
It was here
at Palenque that Mexican archaeologist Alberto Ruz discovered a crypt
deep inside the majestic Temple of Inscriptions proving that this pyramid was a funerary monument with exactly the same function as the Egyptian pyramids. The man entombed here was surely one of Palenque's mightiest rulers
who ascended the throne when he was twelve years old
and lived to the age of 80. This entire city had been completely swallowed by the jungle when it was rediscovered by Americans John L. Stephens and Frederick Catherwood in 1837.
Alberto Ruz spent his entire life here working to unravel Palenque's mysteries He was so dedicated to excavating this site that he chose to be buried here.
Today visitors pass by his tomb just inside the entrance gates.. His work has inspired generations of archaeologists to spend their lives searching for the secrets that lie locked in the past.
Today Mayan descendants still inhabit many parts of southern Mexico
and these proud people continue to struggle fiercely against losing all vestiges of their great culture.

Palenque, Mexico Travel - Palenque was a Maya city state in southern Mexico that flourished in the seventh century CE. After its decline it was absorbed into the jungle, but has been excavated and restored and is now a famous archaeological site attracting thousands of visitors. It is located near the Usumacinta River in the Mexican state of Chiapas, located about 130 km south of Ciudad del Carmen (see map) about 150 meters above sea-level.
Palenque is a medium-sized site, much smaller than such huge sites as Tikal or Copán, but it contains some of the finest architecture, sculpture, roof comb and bas-relief carvings the Maya produced. Much of the history of Palenque has been reconstructed from reading the hieroglyphic inscription on the many monuments, and historians now have a long sequence of the ruling dynasty of Palenque in the seventh century and extensive knowledge of the city states rivalry with other states such as Calakmul and Toniná. The most famous ruler of Palenque is Pacal the Great whose tomb has been found and excavated in the temple of the inscriptions. ( source Wikipedia )

I have been asked by my guides to go to Palenque for the March Equinox, in order to complete the work I began there 2 years ago. Palenque is considered by Drunvalo to be the new third eye chakra of Gaia. We will spend 3 days in the ruins themselves, to truly enter into the energies of this amazing heart and third eye opening Pleiadian sacred site, connecting in particular with the Sun and Moon temples.
We will be guided as to how to communicate with the Light Beings who hold the energies in the temples, and how to reconnect our codes with the energies available there. We will also explore the stunning jungle in Palenque - walking up rivers, finding waterfalls and connecting with Gaia and her creatures with the help of a jungle guide. There are also many optional trips available from El Panchan - to the amazing Agua Azul waterfalls, Mayan villages, etc.
I am planning to stay in the cabanas at El Panchan (see below), a rustic complex of huts and buildings in the beautiful tropical jungle, with rivers running through the land. El Panchan is walkable (or a short collectivo bus ride) from the ruins itself. There are howler monkeys in the trees, beautiful birds, frogs & lizards - and believe it or not, not too many bugs!
I absolutely loved it there 2 years ago - you will meet travellers from all over the world , the restaurants are very reasonable, with a wide variety of food, and there is an internet cafe, etc - but this is not a luxury trip! Your cabana might have a lizard living in it, whether you book one with a bathroom or not! :)
El Panchan Accomodation: I believe it is better to just turn up than book, as you can see what's available and which type of cabin you prefer. I stayed in one of the $8 cabins with shared bathrooms at Jungle Palace last time, because it was right on the river. But you can book using the number below if you prefer!
El Jaguar is up the road from Jungle Palace/Chato's Cabanas/the restaurant, nearer the ruins themselves but I believe it is walkable to both. I cant tell from the information and what I've read if El Jaguar is any smarter than Chato's -- I think it's much of a muchness.

All these activities will be discussed when we are there, depending on how many are in the group, what guidance we are given, etc. But if you wish to make your trip longer, you will make friends on the course that will travel further with you - so leave time after the 21st to do extra travelling! This is easy to arrange when there, you don't need to decide beforehand what to do - just have a few extra days for further travel!
Travel: I believe there's an airport at Palenque but I couldn't find flights there, so I'm arriving in Villahermosa on the 15th March at 8.25am (from LA) From Villahermosa I am catching a bus 2 hours to Palenque (don't have to book).
From Palenque, left out of the bus station, walk up around 200m to a large roundabout, take the left exit (to the ruinas) and wait there for a collectivo. Tell the driver 'El Panchan', about 10 pesos per person.
If you coordinate with me (or stay the night of the 14th in Villahermosa) then we can go together. My flight from LA cost $251 with Aeromex (via Mexico City)

Travel Tips: 7 Places in Mexico you did not know even existed and other travel tips.
Agua azul waterfalls.- This wonder is located in the beautiful state of Chiapas right in the middle of the Lacandon Jungle. If you ever go to the Mayan archeological site “Palenque” you can’t miss this natural beauty. Its turquoise color is caused by carbonated salts and minerals. Just to throw an interested fact, Chiapas has 9 different ecosystems, it is not purely jungle. It is amazing when you are driving up a mountain you can see the warm jungle transforming into cold woods.
Marieta Islands.- Located just a few minutes boat ride away, called by locals “Hidden Beach”. Catch your ride from Punta Mita, a town a few minutes away from Puerto Vallarta. Only look for authorized tours, they are the only one allowed to get there. Actually the boats do not take all the way. Getting there is a little adventure. Once you get out the boat, you have to swim through a tunnel, the price is the amazing “hidden beach” that is breathtaking.
Sumidero Canyon.- This is another wonder from the state of Chiapas. It is just minutes away from Tuxtla Gutierrez, the main city and capital for the region, and main airport. So as soon as you drop off the plane you can go directly to this magnificent site.
Montebello Lakes.- Within the Montebello Lakes National Park, also located in Chiapas you can find a natural complex composed of beautiful turquoise coloured lakes that is not considered a natural paradise for the color alone, but the entire surroundings. The beautiful lakes are just the cherry on the pie.
Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary.- This site is located in the state of Michoacan. It is a protected ecosystem in the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. Every year millions of Monarch butterflies make a stop in their annual migration this place, offering a natural spectacle like no other when millions of these creatures cover trees and the rest of the landscape and dye the view in its beautiful orange.
The Cave of Swallows.- It is 376m (1233 ft) deep. This is considered by many the most beautiful vertical cave in the world. As time goes by and more people know of this place, skydivers are some of the tourism attracted to this place. It is the home of a bird species known as swifts often confused with swallows. This is where this place gets its name. To descend down this cave means getting surrounded in a world with different rules, especially if you get to see the magnificent sunrise when thousands of swifts fly out the cave in a spiral manner, spectacular view.
Las Pozas Garden of Xilitla. - This man made wonder is found in the state of San Luis Potosi in the middle of waterfalls and natural pool. Many say this surreal garden evokes the Garden of Eden. Although this place may look like the ruins of some ancient civilization, it is actually the art work of the eccentric British millionaire, Edward James. He actually arrives to Mexico with the idea of building a Garden of Eden and handpicked himself this spot near the town of Xilitla, San Luis Potosi.

"On the way to Pelenque we visited Xmel, its even bigger than Chichen Itza and has fantastic carvings. Pelenque is set in the Chipas jungle, we saw toucans and heard howler monkeys. The site has parts under gound that you can walk through and you can climb some of the pyramid temples. Its similar, but different enough to be well worth the visit. We moved on to San Cristobal in the highlands, in a mini bus ( am missing the public buses with chickens ) and got held up for a couple of hours as there was a prang on one of the bends between a lorry and car. This gave Bri a chance to play cards with the locals, only loosing his car, house and children in the process. It rained in big splobs overnight , so the Misol-Ha and Agua Azul waterfalls were a muddy brown colour, instead of the turquise blue seen in post cards. The indigenous people in the highlands are amazing. They managed to resist being conquered by the Spanish and each village has its own traditional dress, language, religious ceromonies and laws. Bri managed to snap a great pic as we were leaving, their clothes are brightly coloured and all hand woven.They use the abandoned catholic churches for their own worship, which often involves live chickens....much more fun than the Pope ranting! They have a really low crime rate as they have prisons that have doors facing the street, to shame people and if you re- offend they may chuck out of the village. The street kids here are really cheeky, if they see you eating, they ask for food, I gave up my breakfast and lunch in the same day. Bri has become a babe magnet to the girls selling bracelets ...they see him coming from miles away! Mable x Oh look. more grey pyramidy looking buildings AND these are even bigger, gosh Mac was enjoying himself. The guides have been very good and brought the sites to life. They were really cleaver builders the Myans, secret passages, underground chambers with hidden locking systems, just like in the Tomb Raider games, Bri keeps moaning that his new 2GB card is not big enough even though the trip is for 16 days, he will have to stop taking photos of his feet! The van driver, a Mexican called Ludvic, no honest, is not only a mad driver but listens to TERRIBLE music, if Mac´s iPod fails there could be blood shed... Leaving Xmel the group were held up by a real bad accident and the local ambulance was over 80kms away with an average speed through the mountain passes of 50-60 kmh, not good for the injured. To pass the time Bri played cards with some of the locals on the bonet of their truck using the Spanish deck Mable had bought. With his now near perfect German Bri impressed them in the game they had just taught him and promplty lost. Moving onto poker Bri played them for their car and girlfriend AND won. He gave them the chance to win them back though. Much amusement for all concerned including Sam our tour guide who was very selective on what she translated into Spanish to them for Bri. The road through the mountains was shocking and according to Sam at least one person on every group she has taken has hurled up during the ride.... we are obviosly made of tougher stuff munching our way through double strength chilli crisps, tortillas with cheese dips and bananas throughout, she was mightily suprised. They arrived late evening and headed into town for a much deserved drink and dinner in the lovely town of San Christobel, Mac is looking very much to exploring it. Yep, San Cristobal is fab, colours that you could only get away with here in South America. The local villages are very interresting, shame that ..."

It is in Uxmal where historic Mexico is at its most beautiful and that our journey through the millennia begins, along the Yucatan Peninsula, land of Maya culture.The Cuadrángulo De Los Monjas comprises four buildings with many entrances that lead into various small rooms, typical of Puuc architecture. The forty two metre high Fortune Teller Pyramid is situated in the centre of the complex and the main entrance to the Nuns’ Quadrangle dates back to the 9th century and is flanked on both sides by columned halls. Since the 10th century the remains of the Pre-Columbian architecture of Chichen Itza have combined two cultures, the Maya and the Toltecs. The total number of steps that lead up to the temple, including those on each of its four sides, number an amazing three hundred and sixty five - one for each day of the year! The facades of its buildings are adorned with mosaics. Geometrical ornaments alternate with images of numerous deities and the heads of fantastic animals. Today, the Isla Del Cozumel, an island close to Yucatan, is the destination of luxurious cruise liners that lay anchor so that passengers can enjoy the local scenery. Whether feathered or scaled, the abundant variety of Yucatan’s animal kingdom is a fascinating sight both above and below water. The turquoise coloured water of the bay makes it possible to view the seabed to a depth of thirty metres. Women in traditional costume prepare tortillas: what Cortez once referred to as a ‘corn pancake’ is today an international favourite. Daily routine is just as it was hundreds of years ago and each season of the year determines the daily work of the rural population. Ancient culture and snow white sandy beaches, this is the YUCATAN Peninsula!
