Dozens of people blocked traffic near the Bulgarian National Radio building in central Sofia, Tuesday, to protest against political censorship after the radio show 'Deconstruction' was forced off air by the Council for Electronic Media after being accused of a lack of pluralism, restricting freedom of speech and not "giving alternative opinions."
The protesters held banners reading "Truth cannot be arrested" and "No to political censorship," while demanding the resignation of the Head of the Council for Electronic Media Georgi Lozanov. 'Deconstruction' host Peter Volgin was among the participants of the protest. Volgin labelled the accusations against the radio program as "most ridiculous," as the show was "funded from the state budget."

Travel video about destination Bulgaria.
Bulgaria is located in the extreme south east of Europe, a country of natural splendour, fairy-tale like villages, ancient ruins, and monasteries with remarkable frescos as well as a culture that is between both Orient and Occident. Sofia, the ‘wise woman’ and, since 1879, capital of the new Bulgaria, a city whose roots date back to the fifth century B.C. Once Thracians settled, then followed Romans, Goths, Huns and Ottomans. At the end of the nineteenth century the city’s appearance changed from Oriental to European into a dynamic metropolis. Sofia’s historic city centre features the most splendid sacred building in the Balkan Peninsula, the Aleksandâr Nevski Cathedral, a work of art of the Russian Orthodox religion that can accommodate a congregation of more than five thousand. Vidin is dominated by the Baba Vida Fortress whose impressive towers and bastion date back to the thirteenth century. From the banks of the Danube the north western entrances to the mediaeval realm were strictly controlled and the fortress protected it from invasion by ship. Varna is the biggest city on the Black Sea coast and is one of Europe’s oldest cities. The golden, shining domes of the impressive cathedral in the city centre are one of its main landmarks. The caves of western Rhodopes are the main destination for many of the region’s visitors, such as the Jagodina Cave that is ten kilometres long and extends up to five levels within the limestone mountains. It is the longest and deepest of the Rhodopes and its tunnels and huge galleries feature traces of prehistoric inhabitants. Bulgaria – on the border of both Occident and Orient - a country full of history and natural beauty with authentic culture and overwhelming hospitality. A colourful mixture of fascinating tribes with a large variety of tradition and, according to legend, a part of paradise that God gifted to the Bulgarian people!

Sometimes when you travel somewhere you don't need to spend a lot of time in that particular city and/or country to form distinct memories and impressions. For us, our brief four day stay in Sofia, Bulgaria certainly fit the bill. From amazing local cuisine to street performances, we tried our best to see and do as much as we possibly could in short period of time. The following is a travel video we've put together highlighting the top attractions and things to do in Sofia, Bulgaria:
1) Our first day in Sofia we hit the ground taking in many street performances, getting caught up in a football mob / rally, visiting major landmarks and eating street food. These are our first impressions of Sofia.
2) Already impressed by Bulgarian street food, we decided to treat ourselves to a sit down meal to further sample Bulgarian cuisine. At Lubimoto we feasted on Chushki Burek (stuffed red peppers with feta cheese) and Bulgarian pork loin with potatoes, cheese and gravy. Both were delicious!
3) Wanting to indulge our taste buds further we visited the ever popular Made In Home restaurant where we sampled Rakia and goat cheese salad.
4) On our last day in Sofia we tried to cover parts of the city we didn't get to visit on previous days. Some of the highlights included checking out Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and witnessing more street performances. Those Bulgarian break dancers really do have all the moves!
This is part of our Travel in Bulgaria series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Bulgarian culture, Bulgarian arts, Bulgarian foods, Bulgarian religion and Bulgarian people.

Once Thracians settled in the city followed by Romans, Goths, Huns and Ottomans. In the fourteenth century the city was named after its patron saint, the Goddess Of Wisdom. Today’s Sofia originated at the end of the nineteenth century. At that time the city’s appearance changed from one of Oriental, to European, when Neo-classical buildings and tall civic houses replaced the low-built Ottoman constructions as well as Communist building megalomania! Sofia is a popular city and knows how to captivate its visitors. Its historic city centre features the most splendid sacred building in the Balkan Peninsula of the twentieth century, the Aleksandâr Nevski Cathedral, a huge structure that dominates the highest point of the city. At the entrance to the president’s palace, the changing of the guards ceremony is a popular attraction. Dressed in red-white parade uniforms with lace jackets and feathered hats that date back to the nineteenth century, the soldiers goose-step a pre-determined route. The transformation of Sofia into a lively, cosmopolitan capital has succeeded well with history and tradition still very much in evidence. Young, modern and exciting with all the flair of the mystical Balkans!

Bulgaria Travel Video Guide. From wild, wooded mountain ranges speckled with remote villages and enchanting monasteries to vibrant modern cities and long sandy beaches hugging the Black Sea coast, Bulgaria rewards exploration.
Black Sea Beaches
It isn't hard to see why so many foreign -- and Bulgarian -- holidaymakers descend on the Black Sea coastline each summer. Bulgaria Travel Video GuideThe long, professionally maintained sandy beaches at the big resorts are the equal of some of the most popular Mediterranean destinations, and, if you just want to relax, top up your tan or try out some water sports, there's nowhere better. Away from the parasols and jet skis you'll find smaller, more traditional seaside towns ideal for young families, as well as ancient settlements with cobbled lanes, quaint wooden houses and long, fascinating histories. Even the coast's two big cities, Varna and Burgas, have attractive beaches within minutes of their busy urban hearts.

Bulgaria Travel Guide http://bit.ly/11miBJu
Shepherd Entertainment gives you the history of Burgas in the Bulgarian Riviera and takes you on a tour of the city's sites
and attractions.
The center of the southern coast is Burgas with a population of 210000. It lies on the bay also called Burgas which penetrates the mainland. The town much like its neighbors was founded by the Thracians. It was named in the 4th century after the tower Burgos which stands here. The town lit in the shadow of Sozopol, --, and Nesbar until the end of the 19th century. After the destruction of the Roman settlement, it was an unimportant fishing village for centuries. It was inhabited only in the 17th century by settlers attracted by the bay with the lagoon. During the war between Russia and Turkey in 1828, the Turks banished from the northern coast to the Black Sea settled here.
At the corner of the street named after Lermantoff stands the church wehre the poet fought during the war between Russia and Turkey. We can find here a memorial plaque in his honor. Burgas belonged to East Romalia and was joined to Bulgaria only in 1885. During this time, the majority of the Turks returned to their native country, thus the population of the town fell to 6500 people. The Turks regarded Varna as the capital city of the seaside and they built the terminal of the railway there as well as developing the harbor. It was just this act that initiated the slow improvement of Burgas in 1903. In the meantime, it has become the center of administration, culture and tourism of the southern coast. Today Burgas presents itself with a modern face. The buildings of the city center no more than 100 years old with its public buildings having been built in the 1960s and 70s.
It's interesting that almost every settlement of the Bulgarian seaside has its twin. Golden sands looks like sunny beach. Albena looks like -- Constantine, Sozopol looks like Nesbar and Burgos looks like Varna. The network of the streets is similar to that of Varna and it also has a green park along the seaside. We can find pedestrian zones starting from the park with elegant shops and banks. Burgas also has an opera house. As well as three museums, a museum of archeology, ethnography and natural science. The main street is the straight Alexandrovska which leads from the bus station to the university with several high rise hotels to be found along the way.
The most beautiful religious building is St. Hach, Armenian church in Bogoridi Street. In eastern orthodox countries, it's the custom that an obituary notice with a photograph of the deceased is put on the wall of the church. Thus giving those who only know the person's face but not their name the opportunity to pay their respects. Burgas is not specifically a resort so it isn't abundant in hotels. The best rooms are available at the Hotel Mirza and the Hotel Bulgaria in the city center. From the beautiful railway station built in the 19th century, there are trains chiefly to -- and Sofia. We can reach the cities of the seaside and Istanbul by bus from the bus station opposite the railway station. Sozopol, Nesbar and Sunny Beach are 50 minutes from here. Varna is a two hour journey, the capital city is almost twice as far. The marine park of Burgas is a favorite place to take a stroll and relax. The international folklore festival, the water music festival of Burgas and the flower exhibition are organized on the stage of the summer theater set up here.

http://www.aswetravel.com/sofia-bulgaria-travel-video/ - Sofia, Bulgaria Europe Train
first stop was Sofia in Bulgaria, where we actually gave ourselves an extra day to rest before the next 2 night-trains which we knew would be exhausting. Sofia - MY city, which was a completely normal capital city - but also slightly different. There were simply some things we saw that we just couldn't understand.
Like why they needed to have so many different churches, or why the kiosks had their shop windows by your feet on the pavement so you had to sit on your knees to buy stuff ...
Or why all women insisted on dying their beautiful brown thick hair with grey streaks á la Halloween style (even the dolls in the shopping windows had wigs with the same grey streaks) ...?
The extra day we had given ourselves was a day for resting - or so we thought ... instead we used that day to catch up on all the things we had postponed... like washing our clothes ...
Because of the short time we've been able to spend in each city, and all the things we have had to fit in while there, we haven't been able to wash our clothes other than one item here or there in the shower and sink, because they never have had time to dry!
We're getting used to the way things work in this part of Europe, because it is, trust me, VERY different from the west.
For example, there is no such thing as timing here: ask the train conductor if the train leaves at 7pm like it says on the ticket and he will smile, shrug his shoulder and say "nooo, not seven - maybe half hour later... or maybe later."
Everyone actually counts on the trains leaving and arriving late, and so far not one train has left or arrived on time!

Bulgaria Travel Guide http://bit.ly/11miBJu
Go on a journey with Shepherd entertainment and discover the sites and wonders of Golden Sand in the Bulgarian Riviera, Spain.
Learn about the popular tourists spots and the variety of hotels, boat trips and entertainment it presents to its visitors. Discover the rich selection of unique traditional Bulgarian restaurants, snack bars and shopping spots.
Golden Sand, -- in Bulgarian has been the show piece of the seaside since 1957 celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2007. Its popularity is partly due to the airport in Varna which is close to here. The 3.5km long and 120m wide passage had 50 hotels in 1967. Today, there are many more increasingly modern hotels to choose from. Over 16000 beds are available in hotels, apartments and villas. The slopping hills covered by forests reach all the way down to the sandy beach. The hills and the surroundings, besides giving a beautiful view protect the beach from the cool winds. On the north side of the resort complex, lies the harbor called fisherman's village where cruise ships looking like old pirate boats lie at anchor. The modern metal frame is covered by wooden structures and the decoration also gives the impression that we've gone back in time.
Half or full day trips are available to Valchek, Albeyna, -- Constantine and Varna. Lunch served on deck consists mainly of grilled fish and salad. Those who would like a slightly more modern way of travelling than with pirates may set sail in the Black Sea in a real old timer built on a raft. There's also an outdoor stage here which is protected by towers. In the morning, performances for children are held and in the evening plays are performed. Information about the programs is available at the reception desk of hotels. If you're lucky, you can see a real folklore performance or meet the stars of the local pop music scene. The most sought after specialty of the restaurant of fisherman's village is pig roasted on a spit. The device that rotates the skewer is driven by water power. Cooking on an open fire outside and dishes made over a grill or a spit have always been a big tradition all over the Balkan area.
Nowadays, there may be no resort in the world where there are no small buses which look like small trains. We can find them on Golden Sand too, where they're needed considering the length of the beach. As traveling by car is not really an option here, we should walk along the seaside until we reach the beach or restaurant or shop we like and on the way back, we can take one of these cheap small buses. The seafront following the traditions of seaside beaches has every kind of shop, restaurant and entertainment facility.
Some grocery stores are open even at night and none of them close before 11 p.m. In the shops, we can buy clothes, shoes, swimsuits, suntan lotion, souvenirs, watches, medicine, bags, stationary, film, batteries, toys, newspaper and many other things. The snack bars also offer a great variety. Choose from a selection of donuts, pancakes, corn, fruit salad, hamburgers, giros, pizza, sandwiches, hotdogs and ice cream. In the restaurants, we can choose from traditional Bulgarian dishes as well as Chinese, Italian, Mexican, Russian and other international dishes. We can have photographs taken of ourselves in various costumes, attend dance or surfing courses and hire a boat.
The banks usually close at 4 in the afternoon but some exchange booths are open all day. Almost all tourists have breakfast at the hotel between 8 and 10 in the morning. International fastfood restaurants and the buffets of Golden beach are open until late evening. But the restaurants usually open only for lunch at noon and close at 3 in the afternoon. Diner time is from 6 to 11 in the evening. In Bulgaria, people have a siesta in the afternoon because of the hot climate. In restaurants, the service is mainly slow. The custom is that people spend three or four hours eating and chatting at the table. At more frequented places, we can find a menu in English and/or German and those who work in tourism mostly speak these two languages. Those who've ever learned Russian can use their knowledge here, at least reading the text written in Cyrillic letters.

Take a tour of Historic Nessebar in Nessebar, Bulgaria - part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
The wonders of Nessebar, in Bulgaria, quickly become apparent to anyone walking through the historical district.
In fact, this city is also frequently known as the pearl of the Black Sea for its wonder and beauty.
There are many landmarks from the city's long and rich history, such as the eleventh-century Church of John the Baptist.

Bulgaria Travel Guide http://bit.ly/11miBJu
Shepherd Entertainment gives you the history of Aladzha Monastery, a medieval Orthodox Christian cave monastery complex in
northeastern Bulgaria.
The primary goal of those people who spend their holiday on golden sand is the nearby Aladia Monastery. Don't think of something similar to the Meteoros or a church with a tower and dome. Aladia is a monastery carved in a cave in the middle of a dense forest. Only its inner parts have survived. The forest where it can be found belongs to the 1320 hectare gold sand nature reserve park. We can get there by taxi or bus if we don't have a car and it's only a five minute walk from the car park. Monks invested a lot of hard work to make a kind of labyrinth in the natural caves of the limestone rock starting in the 16th century. Everything was to be found that is to be expected in a monastery. A refectory, a kitchen, a storeroom, rooms, library, chapel and even a cemetery.
We can approach the cave safely on the metal stairs and wooden pavement built during the excavation. Carved in the cliff in front of the caves, a rock church used to stand. Although the exact time is unknown, the church collapsed due to an earthquake or landslide and since then what is left of the monastery has seemed like a cutaway view. On the outdoor stage of the park between the monastery and the museum, classical music concerts are held on summer evenings.
Walking around the area, we can see even more hermit caves but the majestic forest itself, full of birdsong and serenity is an experience in itself. The dense shade of the forests is a pleasant change after the burning sun of the seaside. The remaining belongings of the monks are on display in the small museum of the monastery and here, we can also look at the drawing of the excavation in cutaway form which explains the construction of the labyrinth. Besides the mosaics, icons and articles for personal use, we can get to know the process of the excavation too. The subject of the exhibition is ecclesiastical but is completed by works of modern fine arts.

Our latest transportation travel video showcases our train ride from Istanbul, Turkey to Sofia, Bulgaria.
Recently we had experienced a train derailment en route from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, Thailand. Initially, we felt shell-shocked and our initial sense of feeling naively safe and secure traveling by train (as opposed to any other method of transportation) is something we no longer take for granted. However, even though after our accident it is still our favorite method of getting from point A to B.
Arriving at the train station in Istanbul, Turkey we wondered if we'd even be able to board a train. The station itself was heavily under repair and certain sections were nearly abandoned. After a few minutes of clueless wandering we finally found a ticket booth where we secured tickets for several days in advance.
On the evening we were set to depart the train station was nearly empty. In fact, our first leg of the journey would be by bus as parts of railroad are also under repair. As we sat down waiting to catch our bus we were joined by a young mother cat and her adorable kittens. On the floor next to the chair was a bowl of cat food and water. Istanbul, is a city where cats are part as part of the community as people. As cat lovers ourselves, we wish the care and attention stray cats receive here was more commonplace all over the world.
After dozing off in the bus we were awakened by our driver who announced we had arrived at the train station where we would finally actually be boarding our train. Our compartment was a tiny space where six of us would be sleeping for the night. Three bunks on each side of the confined walls - with no space for extra luggage - was the intimate environment we'd all be sharing for the next 14 hours.
After conversing with several of our bunk-mates we drifted off into a deep sleep only to be awakened several hours later at the border. The get stamped out of Turkey we all shuffled out of the train, climbed over several sets of tracks and waited inside of a small building about the size of a spartan cafe. On the way back from Bulgaria to Turkey, the Immigration officer slept in and we all waited for him to arrive for nearly two hours. His sheepish almost apologetic face was much like that of a teacher or professor who was late for class. it's the first time I've ever been stuck at a border because of a lack of official personnel.
After immigration procedures were completed we drifted back to sleep almost immediately and when we woke up the landscape had changed drastically. Shades of orange, auburn and yellow of the forest occasionally gave way to small rustic rundown little towns. We had arrived during the fall - my favorite season. The scenery reminded me of Canada and I felt instantly nostalgic.
This was the perfect journey in may regards: 10 hours of sleep and stunning fall views outside of our window. However, we had made an error miscalculating we'd be able to buy food on-board the train. Equipped with a package of dates and walnuts - snacks Audrey doesn't enjoy - the collective grumbles of our stomachs made us less tolerant of the fact our train was going to be two hours late arriving.
Overall, we really enjoyed taking the train from Turkey to Bulgaria. We would do it again; however, not without snacks and plenty of water ;)

Bulgaria Travel Guide http://bit.ly/11miBJu
Go on a journey with Shepherd entertainment and discover the sites and wonders of Nesebar in the Bulgarian Riviera. Walk
through this colorful town and discover this ancient city who became a part of the UNESCO world heritage and is now mainly known for its wooden houses, rich history and archeological findings, sided by unique architecture and a handful of touristic opportunities.
From Sunny Beach, we reach Nesebar, one of the pearls of Bulgaria by car or ship in a short time. The ancient Mesembria has been a museum town since 1944 and a part of the UNESCO world heritage. The town with a population of 9500 is mainly known for its wooden houses built in the 19th and 20th centuries while the relics of its distant past are not so eyecatching. Nesebar was a built on an 850m long and 300m wide peninsula which is linked to the main land by a narrow dam. Buses arrive regularly at the station located at the neck of the dam from Varna, Burgas and Sophia. Over 30 centuries ago, the first inhabitants of the settlement were Thracians who inhabited the northeast part of the Balkan Peninsula.
Judging from the Thracian and Skecian motifs on the archeological relics, there was a bigger Thracian influence here than the other cities of the seaside. The craftsmen of Mesembria made the weapons and helmets for the neighboring Thracian tribes. They dealt mainly with the Greeks but their ships travelled all over the Black Sea, even to Egypt. In the 6th century BC, Doric settlers arrived to the peninsula which was easy to protect. The town kept its Doric complexion even during the Roman reign contrary to the two ionic settlements Odessos which is Varna today and Apollonia which is Sozopol today which became Roman.
Mesembria rode out the conquest quite well but its commercial importance declined. This can be accounted for by the commercial connections with the Byzantine empire because it was much closer than the capital city Rome. From the 5th century, Mesembria was an Episcopal seat surrounded by strong walls and its first Christian churches were built during this time. Emperor Justinianos left with his army against the Bulgarian Khan from here. From the 10th century, the town lived its everyday life sometimes under the reign of the Byzantines and sometimes under Bulgaria. Rich merchantmen lived in the strong and populous town in the time of Czar Ivan Alexander. They made it the town of 70 churches although they did it to show their wealth rather than for the sake of their spiritual bliss.
In the 15th century, the foraged emptied coast had been conquered by the Turks and the peninsula was in an exceptional situation. A Turkish traveler, Evilya Cheleby writes the small but totally intact, fortified town is inhabited mainly by Greek people. It's abundant in vineyards and fruit gardens. Its main products are grapes, wine and salt. In the harbor, many kinds of fish are sold. None of the Christian churches was converted into a mosque. The destruction of the town happened later in the 18th century when the front of the Russian Turkish war encroached upon them. Local people talk about 40 churches but only 10 of them are intact. The others, but ruins. The most significant ones are the church of the Almighty and the church of St. John the Baptist. Both were built during the early phase of Byzantine architecture. The floor plan of both buildings takes the shape of a Greek cross and the exteriors are ornamented by blind arches with brick patterns.
One the ruins of the basilica located on Metropolisca Street, we can also study the features of byzantine architecture through the remnants which retain much of the simplicity of ancient Christianity. The 25m long three aisle basilica is the oldest church of the town. More and more people come here to escape from the marauding --. In this way, the population of Nesebar replenished and the town once consisting of spacious merchant houses with large courtyards became a crowded eastern town with meandering streets. It was the world of fishermen, tradesmen and vineyard owners living their patriarchal life. In 1885, Nesebar also became part of the Bulgarian principality.
