Abbott’s agenda and the war on penalty rates

I am speaking on Tuesday evening at a Solidarity socialist group meeting in Canberra on the attacks on penalty rates and what is driving the Abbott government. Make no mistake. Cutting or abolishing penalty rates cuts the living standards o a large number of workers. Bosses won’t use the extra money to employ more staff. They’ll pocket it for their own benefits. The best way to stop these attacks and stop rotten bosses screwing us over is to take industrial action to protect our hard won gains of the past.

The theft at the heart of growing inequality

Danny Katch writes in Socialist Worker US about the increasing gap between the rich and the rest of us. He says in part:

The fact of the matter is this: The rising gap between the rich and the rest of us isn’t being caused by mysterious new forces, but by a very old-fashioned one: theft. The most significant of the crimes is the attack on wages.

Bashing the unemployed is about cutting wages

All of these government changes to the dole, as well as demonising the victims of capitalism and deflecting attention away from the system that creates unemployment by putting profit before people, are also aimed at driving wages down.

Abbott’s green army will be paid poverty wages

Can unemployed workers and others being conscripted into the green army organise and fight back against this rotten exploitation? Absolutely. Will they? Well, since they aren’t covered by industrial laws, withholding their labour won’t be illegal.
If there were a lead from the ACTU and other unions, perhaps they would take action, supported by other workers industrially and financially. If not, then the downward spiral of wages is likely to accelerate under the impact of Tony Abbott’s slave wage green army.

A wages explosion?

The problem for workers isn’t a wages explosion. It is the lack of a wages explosion.

Cut profits, not wages

We workers create the wealth of society and the bosses expropriate it. Maybe instead of cutting wages or holding them down as Crean and Ferguson did and now want, we should cut profits and increase wages. How? We can only win decent wage increases through strike action.

Australia – egalitarian and classless?

The time has come to fight back, to win a more equal society by striking for big real wage increases. And the time has come to redistribute wealth away from them and back to us by fighting to cut the working week to 30 hours.

Abolition of the wages system

The aim of socialists is first to cohere and unite and give voice to the class conscious section of the working class around immediate demands and a socialist program of workers’ power. We workers then have a world to win.

Inflation: up or down, core or non-core?

Any wage increase less than 4 percent in the coming year will be a real wage cut. Let unions fight to defend living standards.

Unemployment and the lies of the bosses

There are some eternal laws of capitalism.  The rich will always blame the rest of us for the problems of their system.  Wages are too high they will parrot. We are only trying to save jobs they will lie. The Fair Pay Commission decision to freeze Australia’s minimum wage at $14.31 an hour shows this […]
