The Incredibles 2 Is Brad Bird's Next Movie; Talks Star Wars Franchise
Ever since Brad Bird’s 1999 directorial debut The Iron Giant, it’s been clear the guy is a very talented filmmaker. He continued to hone his skills in the animation world with the terrific Pixar films The Incredibles and Ratatoullie, but in 2011 he attempted to make the leap to live-action—a leap that many before him have tried and failed. But Bird’s talent clearly transcends which visual medium h

Now playing in theaters is Brad Bird‘s Tomorrowland. The film stars George Clooney as Frank, a disillusioned boy-genius who teams up with the optimistic and scientifically-inclined Casey (Britt Robertson) to discover the secrets of the enigmatic place known as “Tomorrowland”. The film also stars Hugh Laurie, Tim McGraw, Judy Greer, Kathryn Hahn, Keegan-Michael Key, and Thomas Robinson, and was written by Damon Lindelof and Brad Bird, from a story by Lindelof & Bird & Jeff Jensen.
At the recent Los Angeles press day I landed an exclusive video interview with Brad Bird. He talked about his first cut of the film, test screenings, deleted scenes, how they landed Clooney, why he made Tomorrowland over helming Star Wars, the status of The Incredibles 2, the possibility of The Iron Giant returning to theaters (I’ve heard it’s happening), and a lot more. If you’re a fan of this gifted director I think you’re going to dig what he had to say.
As usual, I've listed what we talked about.
Brad Bird:
:05 - How long was his first cut vs the final release?
1:10 - Talks about doing test screenings early in the process.
2:08 - Were there any last second changes that came very close to being included the final film? Talks about why they removed the animation piece that was releases online.
3:54 - Says there are quite a few deleted scenes for the Blu-ray release.
4:50 - Are there Easter eggs in the film?
5:19 - How difficult was it to land George Clooney in the role of Frank? Talks about why he was interested in the film despite the fact it was a major studio blockbuster.
7:19 - Talks about why he chose to stick with Tomorrowland rather than jump on Star Wars.
8:02 - Is he interested in directing an Anthology film?
8:45 - Says he's writing a sequel to Incredibles.
9:07 - Where is he at in the process of writing the Incredibles sequel?
10:03 - Says he thinks the Incredibles sequel is probably his next project.
10:07 - Talks about the possibility of a theatrical re-release of Iron Giant and the various discussions he's had about it over the years.
11:41 - Says the Blu-ray and theatrical re-release will "happen in good time".
12:47 - Says Warner Bros. needs to know there's an audience for it.

A new Incredibles movie is on its way and writer/director Brad Bird is sharing new info on the status of the sequel and what we can expect plus details on his possible involvement in the Star Wars franchise! Today’s episode of Clevver News Feed is brought to you by Pitch Perfect 2, in theaters May 15th! When it comes to Pixar movies and films in general for that matter, there’s one that fans have been wanting a sequel to for years and that is, 2004’s The Incredibles. The tale of a superhero family is one of the most beloved and also one of the studio’s most financially successful films, so a sequel was practically inevitable and fans will finally be getting their wish, but what’s the status of the sequel? While promoting his new film, Tomorrowland, The Incredibles writer/director Brad Bird revealed to Collider that he’s currently in the process of working on the script and already has some pages written saying quote, “I had a lot of ideas for the original Incredibles that I didn’t get a chance to use, that I like. I have ideas that I wanted to pursue a little bit and there wasn’t enough time in Incredibles. There are new ideas I have, and I think there are enough of those together to make an interesting movie.” He went on to say that it feels like The Incredibles 2 will be his next film after Tomorrowland which, depending on how long the writing process takes, means we could potentially see part 2 arriving in theaters as early as 2017 with 2018 seeming more likely. Of course, an Incredibles sequel may have to compete for Brad Bird’s attention with another big franchise. With Josh Trank no longer directing the 2018 Star Wars Anthology project that is rumored to focus on Boba Fett, Bird was asked if we could potentially see him take over that film to which he responded quote, “Well [LucasFilm President] Kathy [Kennedy] and I have discussed the possibility of—I mean she’s basically saying this is a very large sandbox and other people can play in it. I was particularly attracted to the idea of picking up and—J.J. got very excited about the notion of shaping the next trilogy, and that idea was interesting to me too. But I kind of—I’m writing a sequel to The Incredibles and I can’t think too much farther beyond that. I have other things I want to do as well.” So it sounds like Bird has had some serious discussions about taking on one of the upcoming Star Wars films, which doesn’t come as too much of a surprise considering he was at one point considering directing Episode 7 while at the same time attempting to bring Tomorrowland to the big screen, but ultimately decided it would be too much. We’ll have to wait and see what he decides to do, but which would you rather see him direct next - The Incredibles 2 or one of the Star Wars films? Share your thoughts in the comments or tweet us @ClevverMovies and be sure to check out Tomorrowland when it arrives in theaters on May 22nd. And click here to find out where The Incredibles landed on our ranking of all 14 current Pixar movies. Until next time, I’m Ryland Adams, thanks for watching and we’ll see you soon with more movie news!

In 2008 as Frank Miller's live action feature film based on Will Eisner's "The Spirit" was being released I wrote a piece for the Los Angeles Times on the time, back in 1980, when I became involved with Brad Bird and Gary Kurtz (producer of the first two "Star Wars" movies) in trying to get into production an animated feature based on "The Spirit" In that piece, which you can read here: http://herocomplex.latimes.com/uncategorized/the-spirit-that/ I spoke of a pencil test "trailer" for the our proposed film that was made by Bird along with several classmates from Cal Arts, most of whom were working at Disney at the time. Quite a few people who read the article contacted me about seeing the film. I did have it on an old VHS, but it was deep in storage at the time plus as I did not really own the film, I told them they would have to look elsewhere to find a copy. Later, I found the VHS and put it aside. Recently Andrea Fiamma, an Italian journalist writing on the subject for the website Fumettologica," asked again if the film could be seen. As it is a small piece of animation history, I've decided to post it here.

This guy has put on A+ films like Iron Giant,The Incredibles,Ratatouille, and even his first live action film Mission: Impossible- Ghost Protocol until Tomorrowland comes out which I was excited about at the time, it got mixed reviews. I know his next film would The Incredibles 2 which I am excited about. My point is Should Brad Bird direct a live action film again after The Incredibles 2?

Ever since Brad Bird’s 1999 directorial debut The Iron Giant, it’s been clear the guy is a very talented filmmaker. He continued to hone his skills in the animation world with the terrific Pixar films The Incredibles and Ratatoullie, but in 2011 he attempted to make the leap to live-action—a leap that many before him have tried and failed. But Bird’s talent clearly transcends which visual medium he’s working in, as Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol was not only an impeccably crafted and wonderfully entertaining blockbuster, but also the highest grossing film in the Mission: Impossible franchise to date.
Given the fact that Bird is one of the best filmmakers working today—in both animation and live-action—it’s no secret that he’s being courted for a number of different projects. One that’s been a possibility for a long while is The Incredibles 2, which Pixar officially announced last spring.
When Steve caught up with Bird at the press day for his latest film, the Disney live-action sci-fi adventure pic Tomorrowland, he asked the director for a more specific update on The Incredibles 2, and also broached the prospect of him taking the helm of a Star Wars movie down the line:

“’Tomorrowland’ is a quintessential Disney movie,” says executive producer Jeff Jensen,
who is credited with story by with Bird & Lindelof. “ It is steeped in the values of Walt
Disney: you’re going to see some amazing special effects and very innovative
storytelling. And we’ve tried to remain true to the spirit embodied in places like
Tomorrowland and Epcot—places Walt imagined would constantly develop new ideas
for the future. Walt and his work was constantly changing, constantly evolving because
in his mind the future was never fixed; the future is a project that is never done.”
Lindelof and Jensen wrote a detailed story draft, then Brad Bird and Damon Lindelof
went out for lunch and, according to Lindelof, “It turned out that Brad knew quite a bit
about Walt Disney and the hook was in. Brad and I started writing together from that
point on.”
It is true that writer/director Brad Bird is no stranger to the world of Disney and it isn’t
just from working on his previous films. When he was 11, Bird developed an interest in
animation and visited the Disney Studios. Over the course of three years he finished a
15-minute animated film that came to the attention of Disney Animation, who offered
to assign a mentor—the famous Master Animator Milt Kahl—to the then 14 year old.
Bird stayed with a family friend in Los Angeles to take advantage of the once-in-a-
lifetime offer.
Commenting on the story for “Tomorrowland,” Bird says, “It’s a very untraditional story
and the protagonists are atypical. It’s a chance to do to work on a grand scale but do
something that hopefully will be very surprising. It embodies both aspects of the
future—the scary and the wondrous—both of which are somewhat unknowable, so it’s
an interesting ride.”
THE PROMISE OF TOMORROWLAND
In the movie, the premise that the futuristic city of Tomorrowland could actually exist
pays homage to Walt Disney’s vision for both Disneyland’s Tomorrowland and Disney
World’s Epcot, where ever-evolving technologies are showcased along with ideas to
make the world a better place for all. But many believe—although it is generally thought
to be myth—that Walt Disney was part of a secret band of thinkers and optimists and
that Tomorrowland might actually exist in another dimension as a direct result of the
forward-thinking, futuristic ideas that the group developed.
As the story goes, genius French structural engineer Gustave Eiffel, who designed and
built the famous Eiffel Tower, built himself a private apartment in it where he would
later conduct meteorological observations and perform various scientific experiments.
Legend has it that on one fateful autumn evening in 1889, Eiffel quietly gathered
together three of his most illustrious peers—the American Thomas Edison, Frenchman
