Dr. Bryan N. Duncan is a deputy project scientist for the Aura Mission at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. He recently presented the story of air quality in three cities: Beijing, Los Angeles and Atlanta. Instruments on NASA satellites monitor pollution around the world. One of these, The Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) on the Aura satellite, has observed large amounts of sulfur dioxide, which is released when coal is burned, over Beijing. Similarly, in the 1950s Los Angeles experienced high levels of another air pollutant—ozone. When in the higher atmosphere, ozone protects Earth from the sun's ultraviolet radiation. But closer to the ground ozone functions as a pollutant. Half a century ago in Los Angeles, levels were sometimes recorded at more than 500 ppbv. (The current National Ambient Air Quality Standard is 75 ppbv.) With the advent of catalytic converters in vehicles and other environmental policy efforts, these levels declined. But what worked to reduce ozone in Los Angeles didn’t work to reduce high ozone levels in another city: Atlanta. In this video, Duncan talks about the dynamic nature of air quality, what causes ozone, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide, and why reducing volatile organic carbon pollution worked to reduce ozone in Los Angeles, but not in Atlanta. The United States, Europe and Japan have improved air quality thanks to emission control regulations, while China, India and the Middle East, with their fast-growing economies and expanding industry, have seen more air pollution. Scientist Bryan Duncan and his team examined observations made from 2005 to 2014 by the Ozone Monitoring Instrument aboard NASA's Aura satellite. One of the atmospheric gases the instrument detects is nitrogen dioxide, a yellow-brown gas that is a common emission from cars, power plants and industrial activity. Nitrogen dioxide can quickly transform into ground-level ozone, a major respiratory pollutant in urban smog. Nitrogen dioxide hotspots, used as an indicator of general air quality, occur over most major cities in developed and developing nations. Tim Dye has been measuring our environment since he was a kid with his own weather station and a member of the North Jersey Weather Observers. "This was before the Internet," he points out, "so I guess it's not too surprising now that I'm 50 that I'm geeking out in my garage with instruments." His garage is filled with equipment: some of it part of his garage-based weather station kit, but much of it is related to his experiments testing affordable sensors to make it easier for anyone to test the quality of the air at home, in their neighborhood, workplace, school, etc. As air quality declines in many cities worldwide, this might become of interest to more of us. These days Dye helps the EPA test the air in America, but he recognizes that air quality can differ street by street and day by day and he thinks it's our right to know more about the air in our immediate environment. Working with AirCasting of New York City he's helped create a low-cost sensor system that uses Arduino and Android to record, map and share air quality data (carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, particulate matter, as well as temperature, humidity and noise levels). In 2015, California cities topped the charts for every type of air pollution, according to the American Lung Association. New research says that the state has yet another pollution problem on its hands. According to a press release issued by the University of California in Irvine(UCI), a new study found that the Aliso Canyon natural gas blowout released 100,000 tons of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. The leak was plugged on Feb. 11, but remains the largest methane leak in U.S. history. "The methane releases were extraordinarily high, the highest we've seen," said study co-author Donald Blake in the press release. Blake is a UCI atmospheric chemist who has measured air pollutants across the globe for over 30 years
