Rising from the ashes of Mott The Hoople came Mott. Nigel Benjamin replaced Ian Hunter on lead vocals. This track was released as a single in 1975 but failed to chart. Mott released two albums, DRIVE ON which this is from and SHOUTING AND POINTING before they would undergo another change of lead vocalist and morph into British Lions. The singer of that group was John Fiddler, previously of Medicine Head.

Only a twinge, though, because the moment you hit “play,” and the familiar intro, “Jupiter” from Holst’s Planet Suite, echoes out over the audience, all sense of familiarity is forgotten and you’re back in the heart of the monster, knowing that for the next hour or so, you’re in for the gig of your life. Recorded at Winterland in September 1973, the first tour with Ariel Bender (”he’s been with us for exactly five gigs and eight rehearsals”) on board, the show opens with a pounding “Drive In Sister” - the sound quality is a little echoey and distant, with the drums up way too loud, but your ears adjust to that soon enough, the moment “Sucker” slithers into earshot. “Sweet Jane” is scratchy but invigorating, and the audience goes crazy for everything, even Hunter’s announcement of a new album “that I’d like to keep flogging you.” And into a typically moving “Hymn For The Dudes,” a pounding “All The Way From Memphis”… can you even imagine a time when that song needed to be introduced to a crowd? A brutal “Angeline” looks back to Brain Capers; and the b-side “Rose” is welcomed as “a little quiet before the storm.” Because then we’re into the closing sequence… well, we will be once the band finishes tuning up. “A special little number just for you,” declares Hunter, and it’s “All The Young Dudes,” as triumphant and moving as it ought to be, with that guitar line chiming down the decades - the secret of great rock ‘n’ roll is its ability to take you back to a specific time and place, and “Dudes’ is one of those songs that does that, every time. Any other band would have finished there, but not Mott. “Jerking Crocus” follows, “Rock ‘n’ Roll Queen” follows that; and we end with “Walking With A Mountain” - restored to the set, jokes Hunter, because Bender was still learning the more intricate numbers, but included, too, because it’s such a phenomenal rocker, a heads down, no nonsense barrage that will send the crowd home reeling. And that’s the sign of a great live band, isn’t it - an audience recording of the same show, almost 40 years later, still has the same effect. - Dave Thompson
