L’histoire vraie de Murat Kurna , jeune homme d’origine turque vivant à Brême, cherche à donner un sens à sa vie en se tournant vers l’islam. Peu après le 11 septembre 2001, il entreprend un pèlerinage au Pakistan pour y étudier le Coran. Il n’y parviendra pas : en chemin, il est arrêté et livré aux autorités américaines, avant d’être emprisonné dans la tristement célèbre base de Guantanamo, sans inculpation ni jugement. S’ensuivent alors près de cinq ans - 1 725 jours exactement - d’interrogatoires, de tortures physiques et psychologiques, d’isolement et d’espoirs déçus, où Murat n’aura de cesse de clamer son innocence. Face à lui, un interrogateur implacable, Gail Holford, lui-même soumis à des pressions hiérarchiques, qui par de doucereuses manipulations et de fausses promesses tente d’extorquer à Murat des aveux quant à ses supposées "activités terroristes".

Almost 800 men have been held at the Guantanamo Bay detention facility since it was established in 2002. Today, fewer than 150 remain. Despite the fact that more than half of current detainees have been cleared for transfer from the base, and in spite of the executive order signed by President Barack Obama in 2009 ordering the closure of the prison within one year, there's no indication it will be shuttered anytime soon.
VICE News traveled to Guantanamo to find out what the hell is going on. After a tightly controlled yet bizarre tour of the facility, we sought out a former detainee in Sarajevo and a former guard in Phoenix to get their unfiltered impressions of what life is like at Gitmo.

“Los presos aquí viven como reyes”. Me lo dice, así de rotundo, el sargento Roberto, encargado de la custodia de los presos de Guantánamo. El tipo, de origen mexicano, soltero, 10 años de servicio en la Marina de los EEUU, suelta la frase y después una risa de autocomplacencia. Como le pongo cara de perplejidad, le digo, con la confianza de compartir el idioma, “Roberto, guey, ¡cómo puedes decir eso!”, se explica: “Tienen tres comidas al día, ahora pueden ver a sus abogados y hasta recibir cartas de la familia, tienen duchas, juegan al fútbol… Viven mejor que en cualquier prisión de los EE.UU. Yo si fuera preso quisiera estar en Guantánamo”.

What the hell is going on at Guantanamo Bay? We went to find out and at first glance were shocked by what we found in the first hour of being there – bowling alleys, skate parks and McDonalds. Also gift shops and beach volleyball.
Guantanamo Bay detention center is where President George Bush sent suspected terrorists after declaring the global war on terror. Nearly 800 people ended up there, and now less than 150 remain, over half of whom are cleared for transfer.

As Ramadan begins, more than 100 hunger-strikers in Guantánamo Bay continue their protest. More than 40 of them are being force-fed. A leaked document sets out the military instructions, or standard operating procedure, for force-feeding detainees. In this four-minute film made by Human Rights organisation Reprieve and Bafta award-winning director Asif Kapadia, US actor and rapper Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def), experiences the procedure.

What happens after detainees are released from the Guantanamo Bay detention facility? The answer to that question has, for the most part, been shrouded in secrecy.
When five former Guantanamo detainees were resettled to Kazakhstan in late December 2014, a senior official in the Obama administration was quoted as saying the ex-captives were now "free men". But what does that actually mean? VICE News traveled to Kazakhstan to find out.
Abdul Mohammed Rahman, also known as Lotfi Bin Ali, came into US custody in February 2003, accused of having ties to the Tunisian Combat Group and al Qaeda — allegations that Bin Ali has vehemently denied. Still, he was designated as an “enemy combatant” by the US military and was shipped off to Guantanamo, where he was held for 12 years without charge or trial.
In Department of Defense documents released by Wikileaks, Bin Ali was deemed to be of “medium intelligence” value. However, the 2004 intelligence assessment also contained a noteworthy finding, namely that Bin Ali suffered from heart problems, needed serious medical attention and, as a result, was “low risk." The military recommended that he be repatriated or transferred to the control of another country. Despite the recommendation, Bin Ali was detained at Guantanamo for 10 more years.
Lotfi is still sick, and appears to be getting sicker. His new home in eastern Kazakhstan poses considerable challenges to successful reintegration into society. "Life After Guantanamo" paints a portrait of the challenges of integration and the mysterious circumstances surrounding former detainees' basic rights and freedoms after being released from Guantanamo.

Guantánamo is a municipality and city in southeast Cuba and capital of Guantánamo Province.
Guantánamo is served by the Caimanera port and is the site of a U.S. Naval base. The area produces sugarcane and cotton wool. These are traditional parts of the economy.
The municipality is mountainous in the north, where it overlays the Sierra Maestra (mountains), and borders the Windward Passage of the Caribbean Sea in the south. It is crossed by the Guantánamo, Yateras, Guaso, San Andrés and Sabanalamar rivers. The Guantánamo Bay is a natural harbour south of the city.
The municipality is divided into the barrios of Arroyo Hondo, Baitiquirí, Bano, Bayate, Caimanera, Camarones, Caridad, Corralillo, Cuatro Caminos, Filipinas, Glorieta, Gobierno, Guaso, Hospital, Indios, Isleta, Jaibo Abajo, Las Lajas, Macurijes, Mercado, Ocujal, Parroquia, Palma de San Juan, Rastro, Tiguabos and Vínculo.
About 15 km away from the city lies the Guantánamo Bay, a superior natural harbor which has been controlled by the United States as the Guantánamo Bay Naval Base since 1902, following the Platt Amendment decree. It is the site of the Guantanamo Bay detention camp.

Dante Terrell Smith (born December 11, 1973) is an American actor and MC, known by the stage names Mos Def (
/ˌmoʊsˈdɛf/) and Yasiin Bey. He started his hip hop career in a group called Urban Thermo Dynamics, after which he appeared on albums by Da Bush Babees and De La Soul. With Talib Kweli, he formed the duo Black Star, which released the album Black Star in 1998. He was a major force in late 1990s underground hip hop while with Rawkus Records. As a solo artist he has released the albums Black on Both Sides in 1999, The New Danger in 2004, True Magic in 2006, and The Ecstatic in 2009.
Although he was initially recognized for his musical output, since the early 2000s, Mos Def's screen work has established him as one of only a handful of rappers who has garnered critical acclaim for his acting work. He is well known for his portrayal of Brother Sam in the American drama series Dexter. Mos Def has also been active in several social and political causes.
He was born Dante Terrell Smith in Brooklyn, New York City, the son of Sheron Smith and Abdul Rahman. He was raised by his mother in Brooklyn; his father lived in New Jersey. While his father was initially a member of the Nation of Islam and later an active member in the community of Imam Warith Deen Mohammed, who merged into mainstream Islam from the Nation, Mos Def was not exposed to Islam until the age of 13. At 19, he took his shahada, the Muslim declaration of faith. He is friends with Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest.

Shaker Aamer was the last British resident of Guantanamo Bay. Speaking to the BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire programme, he describes what it was like to be held without trial for nearly 14 years. Aamer was held over extremely serious claims - that he had led a Taliban unit and met Osama Bin Laden. The US military classified him as a threat, but he was never charged. His lawyers say the case against him came from unreliable allegations extracted during torture, and that his treatment at the US military base in Cuba raises serious questions about the legality and morality of the so-called war on terror. A spokesperson said the UK government "stands firmly against torture and cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment or punishment" The US Department of Defense said in a statement it "does not tolerate the abuse of detainees. All credible allegations of abuse are thoroughly investigated, and appropriate disciplinary action is taken when those allegations are substantiated." Asadullah was only 10-years-old when he was arrested and imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay. While working as a tea-boy for an Afghan commander, he, along with 30 other Afghans were rounded up by US soldiers and sent to the notorious military site in Cuba. Branded a 'terrorist' he was held for 17 months before finally being released. Al Jazeera's Sonia Verma was the first journalist to find Asadullah after he was freed, travelling to his remote mountain village to interview him. What she discovered was a young boy who had been victimised by the US, abandoned by his country, yet nostalgic for his brief and unusual taste of the West. Ten years later, Sonia returns to Afghanistan to find the 22-year-old. This is no simple task. As her friend Graeme Smith put it, "You only had a name. A first name, which is like looking for a guy called John in New York City." But when Sonia finally does find Asadullah, she discovers a young man trying to rebuild his life after a lost childhood.

As Ramadan begins, more than 100 hunger-strikers in Guantánamo Bay continue their protest. More than 40 of them are being force-fed. A leaked document sets out the military instructions, or standard operating procedure, for force-feeding detainees. In this four-minute film made by Human Rights organisation Reprieve and Bafta award-winning director Asif Kapadia, US actor and rapper Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def), experiences the procedure.

What happens after detainees are released from the Guantanamo Bay detention facility? The answer to that question has, for the most part, been shrouded in secrecy.
When five former Guantanamo detainees were resettled to Kazakhstan in late December 2014, a senior official in the Obama administration was quoted as saying the ex-captives were now "free men". But what does that actually mean? VICE News traveled to Kazakhstan to find out.
Abdul Mohammed Rahman, also known as Lotfi Bin Ali, came into US custody in February 2003, accused of having ties to the Tunisian Combat Group and al Qaeda — allegations that Bin Ali has vehemently denied. Still, he was designated as an “enemy combatant” by the US military and was shipped off to Guantanamo, where he was held for 12 years without charge or trial.
In Department of Defense documents released by Wikileaks, Bin Ali was deemed to be of “medium intelligence” value. However, the 2004 intelligence assessment also contained a noteworthy finding, namely that Bin Ali suffered from heart problems, needed serious medical attention and, as a result, was “low risk." The military recommended that he be repatriated or transferred to the control of another country. Despite the recommendation, Bin Ali was detained at Guantanamo for 10 more years.
Lotfi is still sick, and appears to be getting sicker. His new home in eastern Kazakhstan poses considerable challenges to successful reintegration into society. "Life After Guantanamo" paints a portrait of the challenges of integration and the mysterious circumstances surrounding former detainees' basic rights and freedoms after being released from Guantanamo.

Shaker Aamer was the last British resident of Guantanamo Bay. Speaking to the BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire programme, he describes what it was like to be held without trial for nearly 14 years. Aamer was held over extremely serious claims - that he had led a Taliban unit and met Osama Bin Laden. The US military classified him as a threat, but he was never charged. His lawyers say the case against him came from unreliable allegations extracted during torture, and that his treatment at the US military base in Cuba raises serious questions about the legality and morality of the so-called war on terror. A spokesperson said the UK government "stands firmly against torture and cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment or punishment" The US Department of Defense said in a statement it "does not tolerate the abuse of detainees. All credible allegations of abuse are thoroughly investigated, and appropriate disciplinary action is taken when those allegations are substantiated."

While working as a tea-boy for an Afghan commander, he, along with 30 other Afghans were rounded up by US soldiers and sent to the notorious military site in Cuba.
Branded a 'terrorist' he was held for 17 months before finally being released.
Al Jazeera's Sonia Verma was the first journalist to find Asadullah after he was freed, travelling to his remote mountain village to interview him.
What she discovered was a young boy who had been victimised by the US, abandoned by his country, yet nostalgic for his brief and unusual taste of the West.
Ten years later, Sonia returns to Afghanistan to find the 22-year-old. This is no simple task. As her friend Graeme Smith put it, "You only had a name. A first name, which is like looking for a guy called John in New York City."
But when Sonia finally does find Asadullah, she discovers a young man trying to rebuild his life after a lost childhood.

"The White House has presented to Congress a plan to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility, one of the president's long-standing goals.
He wants to transfer the remaining 91 detainees to their home countries or to US military or civilian prisons.
But Congress is deeply opposed to terror suspects being held on US soil and is expected to block the move.
The prison costs $445m (£316m) to run annually and closing it was a 2009 promise from President Barack Obama.
Human rights campaigners have repeatedly complained about the prison in Cuba, which has held 780 detainees since it opened in 2002.
The president told reporters on Tuesday it undermined national security.
"This is about closing a chapter in our history," said Mr Obama. "It reflects the lessons we've learned since 9/11 - lessons that must guide our nation going forward.””*

Our host Gianna Toboni spent a few days last March on a riveting tour of Gitmo, from the cellblock to the prison library to the local mini golf course and the fascinating commissary. We don't know what was more surprising—the huge python that we encountered, or the interesting politics of the camp's kitchen.

Tunisian Guantanamo Detainees to be Released by End of 2012
Tunisian Secretary of State for American and Asian Affairs Hedi Ben Abbes, headed a delegation of three people to Guantanamo last week to discuss the possibility of releasing the the five remaining Tunisian detainees. He said that the five Tunisians will be back to Tunisia by the end of this year. Ben Abbes also talked about their situation there and the kind of treatment they received.

Shafiq (played by Riz Ahmed in the reenactments), Ruhel (Farhad Harun), Asif (Arfan Usman), and Monir (Waqar Siddiqui) traveled to Pakistan to take part in Asif's wedding to a Pakistani girl. Once in Pakistan, they hooked up with Zahid (Shahid Iqbal), Shafiq's cousin, and they all met in Karachi. There, they attended a mosque, where the imam urged worshipers to help those in need in Afghanistan, and where an inexpensive bus trip over the border was organized. Out of a sense of charity, or perhaps a naïve lust for adventure, the young men decided to travel to Afghanistan. The American bombing campaign begins shortly after they arrive. While trying to get back over the border, they find themselves in the Taliban stronghold of Konduz, where they are captured by the Northern Alliance during the Taliban surrender. Ovnis en Guantánamo
Los ovnis entraban y salían de una gran base extraterrestre bajo el agua, cerca de la Bahía de Guantánamo hace casi 50 años, según dijo un ex marine de los Estados Unidos. El ex marine reveló que todos estos avistamientos tuvieron lugar entre 1968 y 1969, mientras se encontraba prestando servicio en la Base Naval de la Bahía de Guantánamo. A estas alturas ya no nos sorprenden los informes sobre la existencia de bases submarinas en todo el mundo. Si bien algunas de estas bases “secretas” pertenecen a diferentes gobiernos, existen otras bases que están controladas por seres extraterrestres, que habitan en la Tierra. Según declaraciones de un ex marine estadounidense, mientras servía en Guantánamo a finales de 1960, él y sus colegas fueron testigo de numerosos avistamientos ovnis debajo del océano.

Los ovnis entraban y salían de una gran base extraterrestre bajo el agua, cerca de la Bahía de Guantánamo hace casi 50 años, según dijo un ex marine de los Estados Unidos. El ex marine reveló que todos estos avistamientos tuvieron lugar entre 1968 y 1969, mientras se encontraba prestando servicio en la Base Naval de la Bahía de Guantánamo. Y entre todos estos avistamientos recuerda un gran OVNI que sobrevoló la base de 15 a 30 metros de ancho.
La entrevista fue publicada por la Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), la mayor organización sobre avistamientos ovnis en todo el mundo. El ex marine dijo que fueron testigos de muchos avistamientos durante la noche y aunque informaron a sus superiores se les prohibió hablar en público.
El ex marine no tenía ninguna duda al respecto, había una importante base OVNI bajo el agua en la Bahía de Guantánamo. Pero el testigo recordó un suceso que fue el “más soprendente” de todos, mientras se encontraba de guardia en la puerta principal de la base. Sobre las 19:00h, el ex marine salió de la caseta de vigilancia, miró por encima de la valla hacia el otro lado de la base y vio una enorme nube blanca con luces azules parpadeantes cerca del suelo.
“Fue aproximadamente sobre las 19:00h cuando salí de la caseta de seguridad y miré a través de la reja hacia el exterior de la base cuando algo me llamó la atención”, dijo el ex marine. “Detrás de la caseta de seguridad vi una enorme nube blanca con una luz parpadeante azul y blanco en medio de ella.”

De acuerdo a declaraciones de un ex marine de los EE.UU., mientras prestaba servicio en Guantánamo a finales de los 1960s, presenció junto con sus compañeros numerosos avistamientos de ovnis que salían y entraban en las aguas, lo que, según él, sugeriría la existencia de una enorme base submarina en la zona.
La información provista por el militar —que decidió por ahora permanecer en el anonimato— fue publicada por la Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), la organización ufológica más grande del mundo. El testigo describe sus múltiples avistamientos y el hecho que sus superiores le tenían prohibido hablar sobre este tipo de actividad anómala en público. «Nos asombraba la cantidad de actividad ovni que se manifestaba en los alrededores de la base. Virtualmente cada noche volaban sobre nuestras cabezas a una altitud menor a 100 metros», cuenta el ex marine. «La mayoría de estas naves medía aproximadamente entre 15 y 30 metros. En cuanto a la supuesta base submarina alienígena, cuenta que cuando hacía guardia en el lado sur de la base, pudo observar por varias noches ovnis entrando y despegando del océano, y que «unas luces azules se veían cada vez que se sumergían». El testigo declara que su experiencia más sorprendente se produjo cuando custodiaba la puerta principal de la base. «Eran cerca de las 7p.m. y ya había oscurecido. Salí de la casilla de guardia y miré hacia la valla cuando algo extraño llamó mi atención. Detrás de la casilla de guardia cubana había una colosal nube blanca que emitía una luz pulsante azul-blanca en su parte del medio».
Patidifuso, el testigo le pidió a su compañero que verificara lo que estaba viendo, dado que el objeto se había elevado y se dirigía hacia ellos. «Fue entonces cuando el vigía de la torre nos gritó para que saliéramos de inmediato de dónde nos encontrábamos. Pero ya era tarde, el ovni estaba sobre mi cabeza y la de mi compañero. No hacía ningún ruido, solo parecía una enorme y bella nube blanca con una luz pulsante». Los dos hombres se quedaron inmóviles allí mirando por varios minutos hasta que el sargento de la guardia les ordenó abandonar el puesto. «Fuimos hasta las barracas, a una distancia de 60 metros, desde donde pudimos observar todo de forma segura. Pronto la inteligencia de la base llegó con un equipo de gente que comenzó a filmar el ovni, que se quedó allí por cerca de tres horas, hasta que en cierto momento comenzó a desplazarse hacia el oeste de la línea de la valla. Luego la “nube” se movió 400 metros, se detuvo, y abruptamente salió disparada al aire hasta desaparecer de la vista», afirma.
Para concluir, el marine agrega que le gustaría regresar a Guantánamo solo para ver si los ovnis, tras casi 50 años, se siguen mostrando con tanta frecuencia. La Estación Naval en la Bahía de Guantánamo se estableció en 1898, cuando Estados Unidos ocupó militarmente la isla de Cuba tras derrotar a España en la Guerra hispano-estadounidense. El gobierno de Estados Unidos obtuvo un arrendamiento perpetuo que comenzó el 23 de febrero de 1903, con la firma por parte de Tomás Estrada Palma, primer presidente de la República de Cuba, del Tratado cubano-estadounidense. En el último cuarto del siglo XX, la base fue usada como centro de reclusión para refugiados cubanos y haitianos interceptados en alta mar, y últimamente para prisioneros sospechosos de nexos con Al-Qaeda y el ejército talibán.

Some believe that the mere foundation of this country was carried out through massive and total genocide of the Native Americans who were killed in millions and were brought into extinction. There are also the utter horrors of the two atomic bombs ever dropped on human beings and the brutal war on Vietnam. Ever since its creation the United States of America has been involved in hundreds of wars and conflicts the world over resulting in millions of deaths and tens of millions of people losing their homes and livelihood.
The most recent of US violations of human rights in large scale happened after 9/11 when it launched its not UN-sanctioned war against Afghanistan and later Iraq. Then the world witness a new phenomenon in International Law and that was the creation of Guantanamo prison camp where detainees are kept indefinitely and without any access to legal presentation or trial. This documentary looks at the US government’s encroachment of human rights throughout history with a primary focus on The Guantanamo Bay detention camp.
