Hong Kong media mogul Sir Run Run Shaw, who created an empire in Asia spanning movies to television, has died at the age of 106.
He Shaw passed away peacefully at his home in Hong Kong, surrounded by his family, his company, Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB), said in a statement.
One of Hong Kong cinema's defining figures, Shaw popularised Chinese kung fu films in the West and helped turn the former British colony into a "Hollywood East" over an 80-year career.
A passionate film-lover from an early age, legend has it that Shaw first cut his teeth in the business by distributing film reels on a bicycle to rural cinemas in Singapore and Malaysia, giving poignancy to his name "Run Run".
The Shaw studio produced about 1,000 titles, including melodramas, historical epics and kung fu classics like 'The One-armed Swordsman' - helping to redefine genres and lure new cinema-goers not only in Hong Kong and Asia, but in the West.
Shaw also invested in a number of co-productions, most notably the Ridley Scott classic, 'Blade Runner', starring Harrison Ford, in 1982.

Run Run Shaw
Sir Run Run Shaw, GBM, CBE (23 November 1907 – 7 January 2014), also known as Shao Yifu and Siu Yat-fu, was a Hong Kong entertainment mogul and philanthropist. He was one of the most influential figures in the Asian entertainment industry. He founded the Shaw Brothers Studio, one of the largest film production companies in Hong Kong, and TVB, the dominant television company in Hong Kong.
A well-known philanthropist, Shaw donated billions of Hong Kong dollars to educational institutions in Hong Kong and mainland China. More than 5,000 buildings on Chinese college campuses bear his name, as does Shaw College of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He also established the Shaw Prize, often referred to as the Nobel Prize of Asia.
Early life
Run Run Shaw was born in Ningbo, Zhejiang, Qing China, and moved to Shanghai as a child. He was the youngest of the six sons of Shanghai textile merchant Shaw Yuh Hsuen (1867–1920) and his wife Wang Shun Xiang (1871–1939). His name at birth was Shao Renleng (邵仁楞), which was later changed to Shao Yifu (邵逸夫) because he thought that the average Chinese person would not know how to pronounce the character 楞 (léng). There are a number of explanations given for the use of his English name Run Run Shaw, but Shaw reportedly said that it was simply a transliteration of his birth name Shao Renleng in the Ningbo dialect.

Hong Kong
Hong Kong (香港; "Fragrant Harbour"), officially Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, is an autonomous territory on the southern coast of China at the Pearl River Estuary and the South China Sea. Hong Kong is known for its skyline and deep natural harbour. It has a land area of 1104 km2 and shares its northern border with Guangdong Province of Mainland China. With around 7.2 million inhabitants of various nationalities, Hong Kong is one of the world's most densely populated metropolises.
After the First Opium War (1839–42), Hong Kong became a British colony with the perpetual cession of Hong Kong Island, followed by Kowloon Peninsula in 1860 and a 99-year lease of the New Territories from 1898. Hong Kong remained under British control for about a century until the Second World War, when Japan occupied the colony from December 1941 to August 1945. After the Surrender of Japan, the British resumed control. In the 1980s, negotiations between the United Kingdom and the China resulted in the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration, which provided for the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong on 30 June 1997. The territory became a special administrative region of China with a high degree of autonomy on 1 July 1997 under the principle of one country, two systems. Disputes over the perceived misapplication of this principle have contributed to popular protests, including the 2014 Umbrella Revolution.

Overview
Hong Kong is home to many of Asia's biggest media entities and remains one of the world's largest film industries. The loose regulation over the establishment of a newspaper makes Hong Kong home to many international media such as the Asian Wall Street Journal and Far Eastern Economic Review, and publications with anti-Communist backgrounds such as The Epoch Times (which is funded by Falun Gong). It also once had numerous newspapers funded by Kuomintang of Taiwan but all of them were terminated due to poor financial performance. The Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong publishes Kung Kao Po, a weekly newspaper. Apple Daily and Oriental Daily News are the two best selling newspapers, according to AC Nielsen, accounting for more than 60% of readership. Both are known for their anti-Hong Kong government political positions, colourful presentations and sensational news reportage. Whereas Apple Daily is strongly regarded as pro-democracy, Oriental Daily is inclined to be pro-China government. Traditional PRC government-friendly journals, Ta Kung Pao and Wen Wei Po, are owned by the Central Government Liaison Office. In December 2015, the South China Morning Post – Hong Kong's newspaper of record – was acquired by the Alibaba Group, with the declared aim of promoting an alternative pro-China narrative to international media.

Entertainment mogul Run Run Shaw, a major figure in Asia's film industry, has died at the age of 107. The Hong Kong resident founded Shaw Brothers Studios, which produced almost 1,000 films and brought the kung fu genre into the mainstream. He also launched Hong Kong's biggest local TV station, TVB, in 1967 and remained its chairman until 2011. Mr Shaw died peacefully at home in Hong Kong, TVB (Television Broadcasts Limited) said in a statement. Hong Kong Chief Executive CY Leung described him as "an elder that we very much respect". "Sir Run Run Shaw has for a long time promoted the entertainment industry in Hong Kong, his philanthropy also has spread from Hong Kong to China and beyond," he said. In Hong Kong, Mr Shaw will be remembered for launching the careers of stars such as Chow Yun-fat and Maggie Cheung, says the BBC's Juliana Liu. He also inspired Hollywood directors like Quentin Tarantino and the Wachowski Brothers, our correspondent says. Box office hits Born in Shanghai, Run Run Shaw initially worked with his brothers to open cinemas across Singapore and Malaysia. But he moved to Hong Kong in the 1950s and formed a production company, later opening the huge Movie Town studio which at its height churned out dozens of films each year. These included the award-winning 1962 drama The Magnificent Concubine and the 1967 movie One-Armed Swordsman, which broke Hong Kong box office records and led to multiple sequels. As competition grew, Run Run Shaw moved into US movie co-production, including the US classic Blade Runner. He then switched focus to television, building TVB into a huge Chinese-language broadcaster. "With his vision and energy, he had built the company to become Hong Kong's premier television station and a world leader in the Chinese-language television industry," the company said. Mr Shaw, who was honoured by Queen Elizabeth II in 1974, was also a philanthropist and founder of the Shaw Prizes, which mark achievements in the sciences in Asia.

Hong Kong media mogul Sir Run Run Shaw, who created an empire in Asia spanning movies to television, has died at the age of 106.
He Shaw passed away peacefully at his home in Hong Kong, surrounded by his family, his company, Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB), said in a statement.
One of Hong Kong cinema's defining figures, Shaw popularised Chinese kung fu films in the West and helped turn the former British colony into a "Hollywood East" over an 80-year career.
A passionate film-lover from an early age, legend has it that Shaw first cut his teeth in the business by distributing film reels on a bicycle to rural cinemas in Singapore and Malaysia, giving poignancy to his name "Run Run".
The Shaw studio produced about 1,000 titles, including melodramas, historical epics and kung fu classics like 'The One-armed Swordsman' - helping to redefine genres and lure new cinema-goers not only in Hong Kong and Asia, but in the West.
Shaw also invested in a number of co-productions, most notably the Ridley Scott classic, 'Blade Runner', starring Harrison Ford, in 1982.

As competition grew, Run Run Shaw moved into US movie co-production, including the US classic Blade Runner.
He then switched focus to television, building TVB into a huge Chinese-language broadcaster.
"With his vision and energy, he had built the company to become Hong Kong's premier television station and a world leader in the Chinese-language television industry," the company said.
Mr Shaw, who was honoured by Queen Elizabeth II in 1974, was also a philanthropist and founder of the Shaw Prizes, which mark achievements in the sciences in Asia.

One thing I really like about the Shaws is how they cultivated talent in how even stuntmen and extras can shine as leading/supporting actors under the right guidance and given a proper budget. To Kill a Mastermind was an underground hit and in my opinion Yuen Hua's best Shaw role. The cast was mostly extras and throw-aways guys. It's what you get when the inmates run the asylum.

Hong Kong media mogul Sir Run Run Shaw, who created an empire in Asia spanning movies to television, has died at the age of 106.
He Shaw passed away peacefully at his home in Hong Kong, surrounded by his family, his company, Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB), said in a statement.
One of Hong Kong cinema's defining figures, Shaw popularised Chinese kung fu films in the West and helped turn the former British colony into a "Hollywood East" over an 80-year career.
A passionate film-lover from an early age, legend has it that Shaw first cut his teeth in the business by distributing film reels on a bicycle to rural cinemas in Singapore and Malaysia, giving poignancy to his name "Run Run".
The Shaw studio produced about 1,000 titles, including melodramas, historical epics and kung fu classics like 'The One-armed Swordsman' - helping to redefine genres and lure new cinema-goers not only in Hong Kong and Asia, but in the West.
Shaw also invested in a number of co-productions, most notably the Ridley Scott classic, 'Blade Runner', starring Harrison Ford, in 1982.
