Abd al-Rahman
Abd al-Rahman or Abd ar-Rahman (Arabic: عبد الرحمن or occasionally عبد الرحمان; DMG ʿAbd ar-Raḥman) is a male Muslim given name, and in modern usage, surname. It is built from the Arabic words Abd, al- and Rahman. The name means "servant of the most merciful", ar-Rahman being one of the names of God in the Qur'an, which give rise to the Muslim theophoric names.
The letter A of the al- is unstressed, and can be transliterated by almost any vowel, often by u. Because the letter R is a sun letter, the letter l of the al- is assimilated to it. Thus although the name is written in Arabic with letters corresponding to Abd al-Rahman, the usual pronunciation corresponds to Abd ar-Rahman. Alternative transliterations include ‘Abd ar-Rahman, Abdul Rahman, Abdur Rahman, Abdur Rehman, Abdul Rehman, Abidur Rahman, and others, all subject to variant spacing and hyphenation. Certain transliterations tend to be associated with certain areas, for example, Abdirahman in Somalia, and Abderrahmane in French-speaking North Africa.

Abdur Rahman Khan
Abdur Rahman Khan (Pashto: عبد رحمان خان) (between 1830 to 1844 – October 1, 1901) was Emir of Afghanistan from 1880 to 1901. He was the third son of Mohammad Afzal Khan, and grandson of Dost Mohammad Khan. Abdur Rahman Khan was considered a strong ruler who re-established the writ of the Afghan government after the disarray that followed the second Anglo-Afghan war. He became known as The Iron Amir after defeating a number of rebellions by various tribes who were led by his relatives.
Background and early career
Before his death in Herat, on June 9, 1863, Dost Mohammad Khan had nominated as his successor Sher Ali Khan, his third son, passing over the two elder brothers, Afzal Khan and Azam Khan. At first, the new Amir was quietly recognized. But after a few months Afzal Khan raised an insurrection in the north of the country, where he had been governing when his father died. This began a fierce contest for power between Dost Mohammad's sons, which lasted for nearly five years.

The Umayyad Caliphate of Damascus violently collapses as the rival Abbasid come to power in a massive civil war. One of the few surviving members of the Umayyad royalty manages to escape from Syria and arrives in Spain after a five year journey. His name is Abd Al-Rahman I and through his resourcefulness, he establishes a Dynasty in Al Andalus that leaves its mark on world history.

Abd Al-Rahman Traboulsi is a Syrian-American student at the Ohio State University studying Biomedical Engineering. Since the Syrian revolution began he has been working to aid civilians and refugees afflicted by the crisis, travelling to the refugee camps and field hospitals with UOSSM. Abd Al-Rahman founded Refuge, an organization that pairs adolescent refugees with college students in a mentorship program that focus on social acclimation and accessibility to higher education.

Abd Al-Rahman shares his personal experiences on the ground in Syria, offering an intimate perspective to challenge the misconceptions about the Syrian conflict and attempts to humanize the conditions of the countless lives stuck on the brink of a lost future.
Abd Al-Rahman Traboulsi is a Syrian-American student at the Ohio State University studying Biomedical Engineering. Since the Syrian revolution began he has been working to aid civilians and refugees afflicted by the crisis, travelling to the refugee camps and field hospitals with UOSSM. Abd Al-Rahman founded Refuge, an organization that pairs adolescent refugees with college students in a mentorship program that focus on social acclimation and accessibility to higher education.

Abd al-Rahman
Abd al-Rahman or Abd ar-Rahman (Arabic: عبد الرحمن or occasionally عبد الرحمان; DMG ʿAbd ar-Raḥman) is a male Muslim given name, and in modern usage, surname. It is built from the Arabic words Abd, al- and Rahman. The name means "servant of the most merciful", ar-Rahman being one of the names of God in the Qur'an, which give rise to the Muslim theophoric names.
The letter A of the al- is unstressed, and can be transliterated by almost any vowel, often by u. Because the letter R is a sun letter, the letter l of the al- is assimilated to it. Thus although the name is written in Arabic with letters corresponding to Abd al-Rahman, the usual pronunciation corresponds to Abd ar-Rahman. Alternative transliterations include ‘Abd ar-Rahman, Abdul Rahman, Abdur Rahman, Abdur Rehman, Abdul Rehman, Abidur Rahman, and others, all subject to variant spacing and hyphenation. Certain transliterations tend to be associated with certain areas, for example, Abdirahman in Somalia, and Abderrahmane in French-speaking North Africa.
