A wing is a type of fin with a surface that produces aerodynamic forces facilitating movement through air and other gases, or water and other liquids. As such, wings have an airfoil shape, a streamlined cross-sectional shape producing lift.
The word "wing" from the Old Norse vængr for many centuries referred mainly to the foremost limbs of birds (in addition to the architectural aisle.) But in recent centuries the word's meaning has extended to include lift producing appendages of insects, bats, pterosaurs, boomerangs, some sail boats and aircraft, or the inverted airfoil on a race car that generates a downward force to increase traction.
Various species of penguins and other flighted or flightless water birds such as auks, cormorants, guillemots, shearwaters, eider and scoter ducks and diving petrels are avid swimmers, and use their wings to propel through water.
A wing's aerodynamic quality is expressed as its lift-to-drag ratio. The lift a wing generates at a given speed and angle of attack can be one to two orders of magnitude greater than the total drag on the wing. A high lift-to-drag ratio requires a significantly smaller thrust to propel the wings through the air at sufficient lift.
Wing and a Prayer (also known as The Story of Carrier X) is a black-and-white 1944 war film about the heroic crew of an American carrier in the desperate early days of World War II in the Pacific theater, directed by Henry Hathaway and starring Dana Andrews and Don Ameche. Although arguably a classic propaganda movie, it was appreciated for its very realistic portrayal and was nominated for the 1944 Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
In the days just after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the American people are asking "Where is our navy? Why doesn't it fight?" Gravely weakened by the disaster, the Navy comes up with a plan to trap the Japanese fleet, by using one carrier as several ships to deceive the Japanese Navy into heading for Midway, where a showdown with them will be planned. Meanwhile, on the carrier charged with the mission, flight commander Bingo Harper (Don Ameche) is in charge of the bomber crews on one of the aircraft carriers that shouldered the burden in the desperate early days of the war. He is tough and sticks to the rules, while his young pilots behave more like youngsters and do not always follow his logic.

My dad, Ned Smith, was a member of the 414th Bomb Squadron which was known as "Coming in on a Wing and a Prayer". There was also a song written about the group. The All American B-17 almost had it's entire tail section cut off but made it back. I put this slide show together with some of my dad's pictures and some I got off the internet.

Gypsy in my blood
And I lie where the myth is sold
Cross my palm with silver
And I'll give you my heart of gold
Steal away my crystal ball
And bring me in from the cold
And it's fair to say there's no comfort here
No hands to hold and treasure dear
You could very well be the very death of me
Crawling 'round your floor
On my hands and knees
All caution to the wind
Taken by the breeze
No grave concern for repercussion
No room for talk or brave discussion
Well I never
But the devil may care
I'm coming in
On a wing and a prayer
Snowbound daze
Leaves me high and dry
And I swear there's more to me than meets your hollow eyes
Throw me a line I'm sinking fast
I'm not yet willing to die
My secret's safe with you I trust
Show me faith and give me dust
Well I never
But the devil may care
I'm coming in
On a wing and a prayer
The devil always fools
With the best laid plans
And never can I meet
With all your choice demands
It goes against the grain
To place my life in your hands
I'll take the flak if you'll take the blame
Well I never
But the devil may care
I'm coming in
On a wing and a prayer
Well I never
But the devil may care
I'm coming in
