Rabaul, a large natural harbor on the eastern end of the huge Island of New Britain (located northeast of New Guinea in the Southwest Pacific) was an essential strategic linchpin for the Japanese from which they could project their forces throughout the region. They poured tens of thousands of troops, hundreds of airplanes, and thousands of tons of supplies and material into this base to make it a mighty fortress. The Allies' brilliant solution to the Rabaul conundrum was to isolate it, slowly starve it, and bypass it -- rather than assault it directly.
This dramatic, high impact documentary film shows some of the most memorable, exciting, and extensive footage of 5th Air Force B-25G bombers conducting tree top level attacks with machine guns and delayed action bombs to come out of World War 2 .The first step in the reduction of Rabaul was the seizure of a string of Japanese bases along the Northeast coast of New Guinea.
The film focuses on the decisive and revolutionary impact of the air component in the strategy, including high & low level attacks, parachute drops, and resupply, accompanied by a magnificent musical score drawn from Holst's "The Planets." You're literally sitting in the cockpit or in the tail gunners seat watching amazing low level attack runs. You'll also see P-38s, A-20s, B-25s and B-24 cooperating with US Australian and New Zealand Forces securing forward air bases to strike against Rabaul and for the invasion of New Britain. "Mission to Rabaul" shows how each piece of this classic strategy culminated inevitably in the first escorted, massed bomber strike on Rabaul on 12th October, 1943 an essential goal in the reduction of Japanese defenses.

Rabaul town was considered the most beautiful town in Papua New Guinea and also the 'Pearl of the South Pacific' until 1994 when it was destroyed by the twin volcanic eruptions of Mt. Tavurvur and Vulcan. Even though Rabaul town is gone, it will always be in the heart of people who had lived there. It is slowly rising up from the ashes and is still maintaining its natural beauty.

Rabaul is a treasure trove of World War Two relics, tunnels and caverns to explore within driving distance of Rabaul. Close to the now thriving centre of Kokopo, are the remnants of Gunantambu mansion, built in the 1880s by the legendary Queen Emma. After the eruption of Tavurvur and Vulcan in September 1994, most Rabaul services were relocated to Kokopo. The town has grown rapidly and the busy market, selling fresh produce, local cigars and betel nut, is located on the main road from Tokua Airport. The waterfront is the place to find boats for travel to the outer islands or for a spot of fishing.

The Americans counter by taking Guadalcanal first and then finally Bougainville. The 3rd Marines land there and take control in 5 weeks of hard fighting. Then the Army engineers only take 5 days to build another airfield to help in cutting off the Japanese on Rabaul. The Allies continue this practice as Rabaul is completely cutoff and ultimately destroyed. Just another notch in the chain of advancement towards Tokyo.

Rabaul is a township in East New Britain province, Papua New Guinea. The town was the provincial capital and most important settlement in the province until it was destroyed in 1994 by falling ash of a volcanic eruption. During the eruption, ash was sent thousands of metres into the air and the subsequent rain of ash caused 80% of the buildings in Rabaul to collapse. After the eruption the capital was moved to Kokopo, about 20 kilometres (12 mi) away. Rabaul is continually threatened by volcanic activity due to having been built on the edge of Rabaul caldera, a flooded caldera of a large volcano.
Rabaul was the headquarters of German New Guinea until captured by the British Empire during World War I, when it became the capital of the Australian mandated Territory of New Guinea until 1937. During World War II it was captured by the Japanese in 1942, and it became the main base of Japanese military and naval activity in the South Pacific. Settlements and military installations around the edge of the caldera are often collectively referred to as Rabaul despite the old town of Rabaul itself being reduced to practical insignificance by the volcanic eruption in 1994.

They poured tens of thousands of troops, hundreds of airplanes, and thousands of tons of supplies and material into this base to make it a mighty fortress. The Allies' brilliant solution to the Rabaul conundrum was to isolate it, slowly starve it, and bypass it -- rather than assault it directly.
This dramatic, high impact documentary film shows some of the most memorable, exciting, and extensive footage of 5th Air Force B-25G bombers conducting tree top level attacks with machine guns and delayed action bombs to come out of World War 2 .The first step in the reduction of Rabaul was the seizure of a string of Japanese bases along the Northeast coast of New Guinea.

Tavurvur and Vulcan. Even though Rabaul town is gone, it will always be in the heart of people who had lived there. It is slowly rising up from the ashes and is still maintaining its natural beauty.

Close to the now thriving centre of Kokopo, are the remnants of Gunantambu mansion, built in the 1880s by the legendary Queen Emma. After the eruption of Tavurvur and Vulcan in September 1994, most Rabaul services were relocated to Kokopo. The town has grown rapidly and the busy market, selling fresh produce, local cigars and betel nut, is located on the main road from Tokua Airport. The waterfront is the place to find boats for travel to the outer islands or for a spot of fishing.

This song "a kini na vaninara" (=be ready/alert) warns people of the danger of the volcano.It was written and first recorded in the late 70s by Rabaul musicians then was rerecorded in 1980 by Fijian female artist named "Melaia Dimuri".
Barike Band recorded it again in 2002 in their "Frek Tasol"album with the late singer John Wong.This is a duet between John Wong and Matalau Nakikus,where Matalau sings the first part and John the 2nd. Since this clip was done as a tribute to John,only the second half of the song with John singing is included.Rest in Peace John Wong(singer) and Glen Low(Basist).

이곳은 예전에 시청사로 썼던 곳이다. 건물은 화산재에 묻혀있다. 라바울 화산 폭발은 높이 6m의 화산재를 라바울 시내에 뿌려놓았고 이렇게 구시가는 폐허가 되었다. 현재도 활화산이 있다. 가는 길의 바다는 부글부글 끓고 있었다. 화산발치에는 유황이 탈색돼 흰 눈이 쌓인 것 같고, 나무는 화산폭발로 타버렸다 몇 개의 둔덕과 해변을 걸어야 화산에 접근할 수 있다. 요즘은 화산이 잠잠하다한다. 그래서 끓는 용암을 볼 수는 없었다. 이 화산은 유황연기가 화산 곳곳에서 피어올라 기묘한 아름다움을 연출한다. 해지는 라바울의 모습은 또 다른 풍경을 만든다.

The town was the provincial capital and most important settlement in the province until it was destroyed in 1994 by falling ash of a volcanic eruption. During the eruption, ash was sent thousands of metres into the air and the subsequent rain of ash caused 80% of the buildings in Rabaul to collapse. After the eruption the capital was moved to Kokopo, about 20 kilometres (12 mi) away.
