MEDICAL CONDITION: The condition depicted is known as "Tungiasis". It is an infestation of the skin by a burrowing flea called Tunga penetrans (aka: Chigoe Flea). A victim is commonly referred to as having "Jiggers." These fleas tend to infest those who have inadequate living conditions and sanitation. The flea lives both outside around warm-blooded mammals and inside poorly constructed homes. It inhabits dust on floors, cracks in walls and bedding. Shoes protect to some degree but are often not affordable or adequate. More needs to be done to ensure a jigger-free environment, including extermination and sanitation measures, improvements in home construction and making clean bedding more commonplace. Jiggers are vicious and real!
The parasites burrow into the skin and then swell up with eggs; the larvae hatch and the cycle continues. Jiggers cause untold suffering in the afflicted, interfering with sleep, and causing itching, pain and the inability to walk. The parasite can afflict all parts of the body. Victims are often socially stigmatized, left isolated and without family or communal support.
METHODOLOGY: Rise Up Society uses the method of physical extraction under the direction of highly qualified, local physicians with hands-on knowledge in this field. We have refined our method over a 3-year period in which approximately 150,000 victims of Jigger infestation have been helped. We have incorporated new and improved equipment, medicines and practices over the course of time as information became available and funding allowed. While physical extraction is not new, it is efficient and our preferred method until research reveals better treatments. Treatment options for Jiggers vary, and our method may not reflect the practices of other groups in other parts of Kenya or in the surrounding countries that are also inflicted with the jigger menace.

The Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons takes the viewer into “The Management of Gunshot Wounds of the Abdomen.” Made under the supervision of Dr. Robert J. Freeark, a surgeon who established the nation’s first trauma unit, the film includes graphic scenes of a gunshot victim’s wounds and of abdominal surgery. It opens at mark 00:54 with the arrival of the victim at an emergency room. Such an event, we are told, sets into motion a standardized management plan, which is shown on the screen: resuscitation, tracking the missile, preparation for surgery, and operative repair. The film then details each step, beginning with resuscitation at mark 01:25, as ER personnel take vital signs, draw blood, and conduct a physical exam — including a rectal exam — which is shown at mark 03:21. At mark 03:48, the film delves into the tracking of a missile, including inspection of the wound on a victim and x-rays. Mark 04:51 shows a doctor inserting a tube into a patient’s side at blood and pus drain out to prevent a potential pneumothorax. The patient is ready to be prepared for surgery by mark 07:23, including an examination of the peritoneal cavity, as a physician probes a victim’s buttock, hips, and groin after he was shot in the side. Once the gunshot victim is ready for surgery, a surgeon quickly cuts an incision starting at mark 09:17 as blood and fluids are shown rushing out of the resulting abdominal cavity. Loops of bloody small intestine and the rectum are examined by the surgeon as he locates entrance and exit wounds in the body, and at mark 11:00 is shown examining a perforated portion of the end of the small intestine where it intersects with the large intestine. Another lengthy operative scene begins at mark 14:30, with surgeons again shown using a scalpel to create a large incision in the patient’s abdomen and doctors and nurses then pull out his intestines as blood floods the field. Once bleeding is controlled, the operating team are shown conducting a meticulous and graphic abdominal exam and noting all areas of penetration before detailed surgical repairs are shown being conducted on his ureter and small bowel. As the operation, and the film, nears an end, the surgical staff scoops the patient’s intestines back into to the abdominal cavity and begin to close the incision by mark 27:55.
Raised in Chicago, Dr. Robert Freeark is credited with establishing the first trauma unit in the country in 1965 as chairman of surgery at Cook County Hospital. While at Loyola, he pioneered many efforts, including the development of the Aero Medical Program, which brought the Lifestar helicopter to Loyola.

1. Zhang Bin, a 15-year-old boy who was stabbed in the head with a large sword, has miraculously survived. The teenager had invited school friends to his house, but one guest brought the dangerous weapon. Measuring 50cm, it's not known exactly how the sword penetrated 5cm deep into Zhang's forehead. However, he was lucky to be alive after doctors at a local hospital refused to operate – citing inexperience. ‘Three classmates came to visit me at home and one of them brought a sword. He stood 7-9 feet away from me,' explained Zhang as he recovered in bed. ‘I don't know how the sword could fly to me and stab into my head. ‘I felt sharp pains and a large amount of blood streamed down.' After being turned away by local doctors, the boy was then faced with a four-hour drive the nearest hospital in Changsha where surgeons delicately removed the object.
2. This mugging victim had a six inch knife plunged deep into her back — and she didn't even feel it. The shocking picture shows the blade sticking out just above Julia Popova's shoulders and blood pouring from the wound. Incredibly the 22-year-old, who was knifed by a mugger on her way home from work, failed to notice the appalling injury and managed to calmly stroll to safety. The office worker had grappled with her attacker when he snatched her handbag as she walked to her parents' house in the Russian capital Moscow. But she was so shocked by the ordeal she didn't know that the thug had buried a kitchen knife in her neck just fractions of an inch from her spinal cord.
When she got home her horrified parents rushed her to hospital where surgeons managed to remove the blade without damaging Julia's spine. One medic said: "Shock had kicked in and her body prevented her from feeling any pain. She simply walked home without feeling the knife in her back."
3. A soldier survived being knifed in the forehead by an insurgent. Doctors estimate that at least four inches of the knife was plunged into his head. The attack occurred at a cordoned-off blast site. What saved him was medical know-how, great logistics and quite a lot of teamwork.
4. A 19-year old man from the Russian city of Yekaterinburg has survived after stabbing himself in the head with a pair of scissors. The man, Mark Makarenkov, was having an argument with his girlfriend and after she left, he suddenly grabbed the scissors and stabbed himself in the temple. Makarenkov's mother called for an ambulance and he was taken to hospital. The surgeons carried out an operation to remove the scissors which was embedded 5 centimeters into his skull, but luckily did not damage his brain or eye. After learning of the brutal incident, his girlfriend rushed to the hospital and begged for forgiveness, with reasons undisclosed.
5. This harrowing picture shows an x-ray of a 15-year-old boy's skull after a five inch knife was plunged into his head. Amazingly the teenager survived the stabbing and ten months on from the attack has enrolled in college. The boy and two other youngsters were attacked when they tried to stop a friend being robbed at a bus stop in London. The muggers used a kitchen knife to stab one boy in the forehead, another twice in the back and a third in the shoulder. He survived because he was rushed to hospital with the knife still sticking out of his head and doctors managed to operate in time. Surgeons said if anyone had tried to take it out he would have died.
6. A 23-year-old man has survived an operation after he was thrust into his left orbit with a sword. Bui Ngoc Tuan, from the central province of Thanh Hoa, had a row with two cab drivers over the taxi fares after they had taken him together with 10 other people back to their hotel in Dong Hoi City of the central province of Quang Binh. The ten are part of a group comprising 30 people, also from Thanh Hoa, who dropped by Dong Hoi on their way home after travelling with Tuan to Da Nang and Quang Tri Provinces in central Vietnam.
The cab drivers, after a while, called in a gang who then rushed to attack the passengers with sticks, knives, and swords. One of them suddenly thrust a 50-centimeter sword into Tuan's left eye socket. The others were slightly hurt. Tuan was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, and then sent to Hue central hospital in Thua Thien Hue Province as local doctors said the wound was truly serious. He survived the operation at the latter hospital though the sword penetrated almost 10 cm deep inside the orbit.

It is an infestation of the skin by a burrowing flea called Tunga penetrans (aka: Chigoe Flea). A victim is commonly referred to as having "Jiggers." These fleas tend to infest those who have inadequate living conditions and sanitation. The flea lives both outside around warm-blooded mammals and inside poorly constructed homes. It inhabits dust on floors, cracks in walls and bedding. Shoes protect to some degree but are often not affordable or adequate. More needs to be done to ensure a jigger-free environment, including extermination and sanitation measures, improvements in home construction and making clean bedding more commonplace. Jiggers are vicious and real! The parasites burrow into the skin and then swell up with eggs; the larvae hatch and the cycle continues. Jiggers cause untold suffering in the afflicted, interfering with sleep, and causing itching, pain and the inability to walk. The parasite can afflict all parts of the body. Victims are often socially stigmatized, left isolated and without family or communal support. METHODOLOGY: Rise Up Society uses the method of physical extraction under the direction of highly qualified, local physicians with hands-on knowledge in this field. We have refined our method over a 3-year period in which approximately 150,000 victims of Jigger infestation have been helped. We have incorporated new and improved equipment, medicines and practices over the course of time as information became available and funding allowed. While physical extraction is not new, it is efficient and our preferred method until research reveals better treatments. Treatment options for Jiggers vary, and our method may not reflect the practices of other groups in other parts of Kenya or in the surrounding countries that are also inflicted with the jigger menace. The Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons takes the viewer into “The Management of Gunshot Wounds of the Abdomen.” Made under the supervision of Dr. Robert J. Freeark, a surgeon who established the nation’s first trauma unit, the film includes graphic scenes of a gunshot victim’s wounds and of abdominal surgery. It opens at mark 00:54 with the arrival of the victim at an emergency room. Such an event, we are told, sets into motion a standardized management plan, which is shown on the screen: resuscitation, tracking the missile, preparation for surgery, and operative repair. The film then details each step, beginning with resuscitation at mark 01:25, as ER personnel take vital signs, draw blood, and conduct a physical exam — including a rectal exam — which is shown at mark 03:21. At mark 03:48, the film delves into the tracking of a missile, including inspection of the wound on a victim and x-rays. Mark 04:51 shows a doctor inserting a tube into a patient’s side at blood and pus drain out to prevent a potential pneumothorax. The patient is ready to be prepared for surgery by mark 07:23, including an examination of the peritoneal cavity, as a physician probes a victim’s buttock, hips, and groin after he was shot in the side. Once the gunshot victim is ready for surgery, a surgeon quickly cuts an incision starting at mark 09:17 as blood and fluids are shown rushing out of the resulting abdominal cavity. Loops of bloody small intestine and the rectum are examined by the surgeon as he locates entrance and exit wounds in the body, and at mark 11:00 is shown examining a perforated portion of the end of the small intestine where it intersects with the large intestine. Another lengthy operative scene begins at mark 14:30, with surgeons again shown using a scalpel to create a large incision in the patient’s abdomen and doctors and nurses then pull out his intestines as blood floods the field. Once bleeding is controlled, the operating team are shown conducting a meticulous and graphic abdominal exam and noting all areas of penetration before detailed surgical repairs are shown being conducted on his ureter and small bowel. As the operation, and the film, nears an end, the surgical staff scoops the patient’s intestines back into to the abdominal cavity and begin to close the incision by mark 27:55. Raised in Chicago, Dr. Robert Freeark is credited with establishing the first trauma unit in the country in 1965 as chairman of surgery at Cook County Hospital. While at Loyola, he pioneered many efforts, including the development of the Aero Medical Program, which brought the Lifestar helicopter to Loyola. The teenager had invited school friends to his house, but one guest brought the dangerous weapon. Measuring 50cm, it's not known exactly how the sword penetrated 5cm deep into Zhang's forehead. However, he was lucky to be alive after doctors at a local hospital refused to operate – citing inexperience. ‘Three classmates came to visit me at home and one of them brought a sword. He stood 7-9 feet away from me,' explained Zhang as he recovered in bed. ‘I don't know how the sword could fly to me and stab into my head. ‘I felt sharp pains and a large amount of blood streamed down.' After being turned away by local doctors, the boy was then faced with a four-hour drive the nearest hospital in Changsha where surgeons delicately removed the object. 2. This mugging victim had a six inch knife plunged deep into her back — and she didn't even feel it. The shocking picture shows the blade sticking out just above Julia Popova's shoulders and blood pouring from the wound. Incredibly the 22-year-old, who was knifed by a mugger on her way home from work, failed to notice the appalling injury and managed to calmly stroll to safety. The office worker had grappled with her attacker when he snatched her handbag as she walked to her parents' house in the Russian capital Moscow. But she was so shocked by the ordeal she didn't know that the thug had buried a kitchen knife in her neck just fractions of an inch from her spinal cord. When she got home her horrified parents rushed her to hospital where surgeons managed to remove the blade without damaging Julia's spine. One medic said: "Shock had kicked in and her body prevented her from feeling any pain. She simply walked home without feeling the knife in her back." 3. A soldier survived being knifed in the forehead by an insurgent. Doctors estimate that at least four inches of the knife was plunged into his head. The attack occurred at a cordoned-off blast site. What saved him was medical know-how, great logistics and quite a lot of teamwork. 4. A 19-year old man from the Russian city of Yekaterinburg has survived after stabbing himself in the head with a pair of scissors. The man, Mark Makarenkov, was having an argument with his girlfriend and after she left, he suddenly grabbed the scissors and stabbed himself in the temple. Makarenkov's mother called for an ambulance and he was taken to hospital. The surgeons carried out an operation to remove the scissors which was embedded 5 centimeters into his skull, but luckily did not damage his brain or eye. After learning of the brutal incident, his girlfriend rushed to the hospital and begged for forgiveness, with reasons undisclosed. 5. This harrowing picture shows an x-ray of a 15-year-old boy's skull after a five inch knife was plunged into his head. Amazingly the teenager survived the stabbing and ten months on from the attack has enrolled in college. The boy and two other youngsters were attacked when they tried to stop a friend being robbed at a bus stop in London. The muggers used a kitchen knife to stab one boy in the forehead, another twice in the back and a third in the shoulder. He survived because he was rushed to hospital with the knife still sticking out of his head and doctors managed to operate in time. Surgeons said if anyone had tried to take it out he would have died. 6. A 23-year-old man has survived an operation after he was thrust into his left orbit with a sword. Bui Ngoc Tuan, from the central province of Thanh Hoa, had a row with two cab drivers over the taxi fares after they had taken him together with 10 other people back to their hotel in Dong Hoi City of the central province of Quang Binh. The ten are part of a group comprising 30 people, also from Thanh Hoa, who dropped by Dong Hoi on their way home after travelling with Tuan to Da Nang and Quang Tri Provinces in central Vietnam. The cab drivers, after a while, called in a gang who then rushed to attack the passengers with sticks, knives, and swords. One of them suddenly thrust a 50-centimeter sword into Tuan's left eye socket. The others were slightly hurt. Tuan was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, and then sent to Hue central hospital in Thua Thien Hue Province as local doctors said the wound was truly serious. MEDICAL CONDITION: The condition depicted is known as "Tungiasis". It is an infestation of the skin by a burrowing flea called Tunga penetrans (aka: Chigoe Flea). A victim is commonly referred to as having "Jiggers." These fleas tend to infest those who have inadequate living conditions and sanitation. The flea lives both outside around warm-blooded mammals and inside poorly constructed homes. It inhabits dust on floors, cracks in walls and bedding. Shoes protect to some degree but are often not affordable or adequate. More needs to be done to ensure a jigger-free environment, including extermination and sanitation measures, improvements in home construction and making clean bedding more commonplace. Jiggers are vicious and real!
The parasites burrow into the skin and then swell up with eggs; the larvae hatch and the cycle continues. Jiggers cause untold suffering in the afflicted, interfering with sleep, and causing itching, pain and the inability to walk. The parasite can afflict all parts of the body. Victims are often socially stigmatized, left isolated and without family or communal support.
METHODOLOGY: Rise Up Society uses the method of physical extraction under the direction of highly qualified, local physicians with hands-on knowledge in this field. We have refined our method over a 3-year period in which approximately 150,000 victims of Jigger infestation have been helped. We have incorporated new and improved equipment, medicines and practices over the course of time as information became available and funding allowed. While physical extraction is not new, it is efficient and our preferred method until research reveals better treatments. Treatment options for Jiggers vary, and our method may not reflect the practices of other groups in other parts of Kenya or in the surrounding countries that are also inflicted with the jigger menace.

The Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons takes the viewer into “The Management of Gunshot Wounds of the Abdomen.” Made under the supervision of Dr. Robert J. Freeark, a surgeon who established the nation’s first trauma unit, the film includes graphic scenes of a gunshot victim’s wounds and of abdominal surgery. It opens at mark 00:54 with the arrival of the victim at an emergency room. Such an event, we are told, sets into motion a standardized management plan, which is shown on the screen: resuscitation, tracking the missile, preparation for surgery, and operative repair. The film then details each step, beginning with resuscitation at mark 01:25, as ER personnel take vital signs, draw blood, and conduct a physical exam — including a rectal exam — which is shown at mark 03:21. At mark 03:48, the film delves into the tracking of a missile, including inspection of the wound on a victim and x-rays. Mark 04:51 shows a doctor inserting a tube into a patient’s side at blood and pus drain out to prevent a potential pneumothorax. The patient is ready to be prepared for surgery by mark 07:23, including an examination of the peritoneal cavity, as a physician probes a victim’s buttock, hips, and groin after he was shot in the side. Once the gunshot victim is ready for surgery, a surgeon quickly cuts an incision starting at mark 09:17 as blood and fluids are shown rushing out of the resulting abdominal cavity. Loops of bloody small intestine and the rectum are examined by the surgeon as he locates entrance and exit wounds in the body, and at mark 11:00 is shown examining a perforated portion of the end of the small intestine where it intersects with the large intestine. Another lengthy operative scene begins at mark 14:30, with surgeons again shown using a scalpel to create a large incision in the patient’s abdomen and doctors and nurses then pull out his intestines as blood floods the field. Once bleeding is controlled, the operating team are shown conducting a meticulous and graphic abdominal exam and noting all areas of penetration before detailed surgical repairs are shown being conducted on his ureter and small bowel. As the operation, and the film, nears an end, the surgical staff scoops the patient’s intestines back into to the abdominal cavity and begin to close the incision by mark 27:55.
Raised in Chicago, Dr. Robert Freeark is credited with establishing the first trauma unit in the country in 1965 as chairman of surgery at Cook County Hospital. While at Loyola, he pioneered many efforts, including the development of the Aero Medical Program, which brought the Lifestar helicopter to Loyola.

1. Zhang Bin, a 15-year-old boy who was stabbed in the head with a large sword, has miraculously survived. The teenager had invited school friends to his house, but one guest brought the dangerous weapon. Measuring 50cm, it's not known exactly how the sword penetrated 5cm deep into Zhang's forehead. However, he was lucky to be alive after doctors at a local hospital refused to operate – citing inexperience. ‘Three classmates came to visit me at home and one of them brought a sword. He stood 7-9 feet away from me,' explained Zhang as he recovered in bed. ‘I don't know how the sword could fly to me and stab into my head. ‘I felt sharp pains and a large amount of blood streamed down.' After being turned away by local doctors, the boy was then faced with a four-hour drive the nearest hospital in Changsha where surgeons delicately removed the object.
2. This mugging victim had a six inch knife plunged deep into her back — and she didn't even feel it. The shocking picture shows the blade sticking out just above Julia Popova's shoulders and blood pouring from the wound. Incredibly the 22-year-old, who was knifed by a mugger on her way home from work, failed to notice the appalling injury and managed to calmly stroll to safety. But she was so shocked by the ordeal she didn't know that the thug had buried a kitchen knife in her neck just fractions of an inch from her spinal cord.
When she got home her horrified parents rushed her to hospital where surgeons managed to remove the blade without damaging Julia's spine. One medic said: "Shock had kicked in and her body prevented her from feeling any pain. She simply walked home without feeling the knife in her back."

The man, Mark Makarenkov, was having an argument with his girlfriend and after she left, he suddenly grabbed the scissors and stabbed himself in the temple. Makarenkov's mother called for an ambulance and he was taken to hospital. The surgeons carried out an operation to remove the scissors which was embedded 5 centimeters into his skull, but luckily did not damage his brain or eye. After learning of the brutal incident, his girlfriend rushed to the hospital and begged for forgiveness, with reasons undisclosed.
5. This harrowing picture shows an x-ray of a 15-year-old boy's skull after a five inch knife was plunged into his head. Amazingly the teenager survived the stabbing and ten months on from the attack has enrolled in college. The boy and two other youngsters were attacked when they tried to stop a friend being robbed at a bus stop in London. The muggers used a kitchen knife to stab one boy in the forehead, another twice in the back and a third in the shoulder. He survived because he was rushed to hospital with the knife still sticking out of his head and doctors managed to operate in time. Surgeons said if anyone had tried to take it out he would have died.
6. A 23-year-old man has survived an operation after he was thrust into his left orbit with a sword. Bui Ngoc Tuan, from the central province of Thanh Hoa, had a row with two cab drivers over the taxi fares after they had taken him together with 10 other people back to their hotel in Dong Hoi City of the central province of Quang Binh. The ten are part of a group comprising 30 people, also from Thanh Hoa, who dropped by Dong Hoi on their way home after travelling with Tuan to Da Nang and Quang Tri Provinces in central Vietnam.
The cab drivers, after a while, called in a gang who then rushed to attack the passengers with sticks, knives, and swords. One of them suddenly thrust a 50-centimeter sword into Tuan's left eye socket. The others were slightly hurt. Tuan was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, and then sent to Hue central hospital in Thua Thien Hue Province as local doctors said the wound was truly serious. He survived the operation at the latter hospital though the sword penetrated almost 10 cm deep inside the orbit.

The teenager had invited school friends to his house, but one guest brought the dangerous weapon. Measuring 50cm, it's not known exactly how the sword penetrated 5cm deep into Zhang's forehead. However, he was lucky to be alive after doctors at a local hospital refused to operate – citing inexperience. ‘Three classmates came to visit me at home and one of them brought a sword. He stood 7-9 feet away from me,' explained Zhang as he recovered in bed. ‘I don't know how the sword could fly to me and stab into my head. ‘I felt sharp pains and a large amount of blood streamed down.' After being turned away by local doctors, the boy was then faced with a four-hour drive the nearest hospital in Changsha where surgeons delicately removed the object.
