I asked some Canadian students what Serbian sounds like to them. I started by playing them the audio from the a of a Serbian TV show. Then I asked them to guess which language was in the sample played to them. After a few guesses I gave them visual clues from the video so they could see the script and ethnicity of the people in the sample video.
Most of them thought it was one of the romance languages, like Spanish or Italian. In fact, I also thought the first few seconds of the clip sounded like a romance language.
Finally, I asked them to imitate what they have heard for native Serbian speakers to hear what their language sounds like to foreigners. This segment took some convincing because the subjects did not want to offend anyone or seem racist. Therefore please do not blame them if you are offended, I asked them to do it and most of them did it reluctantly.
I used "Miljana Gavrilović - Tačno 9 (4.3.2014)" as the sample.

In my first video about Serbian I played a clip of Serbian to see if people could identify the language in the clip. In this one I started by asking people for their impression on Serbian. Most said Serbian sounds like Russian. Then I played them a clip of Serbian to see if it was what they thought Serbian would sound like. After their brave imitations I played 2 more clips, one in Serbian and one in Russian, to see if they could identify Serbian.

I want to make myself clear on some points and say things that I didn’t mention :
When I cite ‘’the baby example ‘’, at the end of the video ‘’ : A baby never learns by heart : I am / You are /She is /We are /they Are’’. Don’t get me wrong !
You have to learn verbs by heart when you start to learn a language. That’s the regular procedure. Of course !..but after.. when you start to speak the language : comprehension is essential.
I said it that way because i can see a lot of people learning grammar,verbs,tenses and after using them without knowing WHY is this specific tense or word used (for example)
FLUENCY is reached with COMPREHENSION.
To put it simply, every language is different. For example, French and Spanish are two latin languages but they are not the same.
Every single time , when i’m improving my languages, i am trying to understand the language and its specifics. Every polyglot friend that I have..is doing the same thing. It’s just a matter of practice and LOVE. Yes, love.
Every person is different : someone will understand it with listening , someone will manage his/her skills with talking and someone will study hard in order to understand. As I said, nothing is given for granted. Behind every great talent : there is HARDWORK and hard work can surpass talent. Trust me. ( I’m sure that you’ve already heard that !) :)
Therefore, to reach fluency : talk / listen/ read. Find your own way.. I mean you can learn a language with movies. I know a bunch of people that learned English with tv shows. I am one of them. :)
You can’t reach fluency without work. Watching series, listening the radio, reading foreign articles. –
your interests can lead you to accomplishment. Why don’t you read an article in another language ? :)
And yes , as i said in the video : it’s essential to make mistakes. Don’t be ASHAMED. I was ashamed in school because i had some friends in my class that were perfectionists. I would rather say nothing than make mistakes in front of them. I guess I was so immature.
If you worry constantly about your mistakes and if you only want to reach a certain ‘’language-perfection’’, if I can say so , YOU WILL MAKE EVEN MORE MISTAKES.
That’s what I learned. Don’t be ashamed of your accent or anything... Just speak.
Also , I can hear a lot of people saying : ‘’ Yes ,but I don’t have a private teacher’ ,‘’ If my parents had enough money to pay languages courses, I would’ve learned 10 languages ‘’ my language level in school is not high’ ‘ my teachers aren’t good’ ‘ etc..
I have friends from different social groups , and trust me, a lot of them didn’t have any of those things. . AND THEY ARE BILINGUAL.
My favorite quote is : ‘‘ Every accomplishment starts with the decision to TRY‘’ – this quote doesn’t say : ‘’every accomplishment starts with wealthy parents or great highschool ’’
When I say that ,my purpose is not to sound wise. That’s just true ! It’s never a matter of money.
A friend ,from my neighbourhood, wasn’t rich. His parents were social workers. He studied hard , applied for a local Belgrade College..Asked for scolarship. Got it. 4 years later ,He asked for scolarship abroad. He went to the States.. Did his master and now works for a great company and earns a lot of money.
I NEVER said that learning a language was or will be easy. I will never say it. Nothing in life is easy but some improvements can be made with WORK. ( I’m sure that everyone knows that ) :)
My friends always told me that I should make this video and share my story. And here it is, i’ve made it. :)
There are mistakes but that was my intention : I wanted to be natural and to improvize. Also , i really wanted to see myself , my faces reaction and have fun with improvisation
..to be honest, i love to laugh about myself once in a while.
( Even though, when I speak french, I’m completely serious about the bullies ) - PS : if anyone from my old school reads this, please know that i felt it that way. Maybe it wasn’t your intention. I guess we were all immature.

A: Sure. I have a blog where I wrote probably everything I think about language learning (http://www.foreverastudent.com). Feel free to check it out. I could write here too but I would only be repeating myself. I also made a lot of videos about language learning on this channel.
Q: How long does it take you to learn a new language?
A: It depends on the language. Also it is difficult to tell what it means to 'learn a language'. To get to a C1 level in Russian it took me about 3 months, to do the same thing in Chinese about 7-8 years.

A: I must've gotten about 100 comments like this and worse. I honestly don't understand why all the hate against Brazilian Portuguese from Portugal. I just felt silly writing 'Brazilian' instead of 'Portuguese' especially since as far as I know the official language of Brazil is called Portuguese, not Brazilian. It's like saying I speak 'American' instead of 'English'. But, lesson learned, next time I will proudly say I learned 'Brazilian Portuguese'. I learned Brazilian Portuguese because: I love its sound, wonderful Brazilian smiling people, the country, the music, the nature and because I'd like to live there one day.

Scandinavian languages?
A: Originally no, because I never had a chance or good reasons to learn them, plus it's too cold for me up there, but recently I read a book by Stieg Larsson and got a bit interested, so maybe I will.
Q: Great Chinese but you speak with a Taiwanese accent.
A: I lived in Taiwan for 5 years. I don't know how to speak in any other way.
Q: The use of the word 'geil' in the German part was inappropriate/wrong/off.
A: It was a bit off, you're right. I learned German when I was a teenager and didn't use it since. I said the word without thinking too much. It's definitely not that I used it on purpose to sound cool.

Serbo-Croatian is the only European language with active digraphia, using both Cyrillic and Latin alphabets. Teen polyglot speaks 6 languages : English / French ( francais ) / Spanish ( español ) / Italian ( italiano) / Portuguese ( português)/ Serbian ( srpski) - instagram : @novakovsara Please read :) I want to make myself clear on some points and say things that I didn’t mention : When I cite ‘’the baby example ‘’, at the end of the video ‘’ : A baby never learns by heart : I am / You are /She is /We are /they Are’’. Don’t get me wrong ! You have to learn verbs by heart when you start to learn a language. That’s the regular procedure. Of course !..but after.. when you start to speak the language : comprehension is essential. I said it that way because i can see a lot of people learning grammar,verbs,tenses and after using them without knowing WHY is this specific tense or word used (for example) FLUENCY is reached with COMPREHENSION. To put it simply, every language is different. For example, French and Spanish are two latin languages but they are not the same. Every single time , when i’m improving my languages, i am trying to understand the language and its specifics. Every polyglot friend that I have..is doing the same thing. It’s just a matter of practice and LOVE. Yes, love. Every person is different : someone will understand it with listening , someone will manage his/her skills with talking and someone will study hard in order to understand. As I said, nothing is given for granted. Behind every great talent : there is HARDWORK and hard work can surpass talent. Trust me. ( I’m sure that you’ve already heard that !) :) Therefore, to reach fluency : talk / listen/ read. Find your own way.. I mean you can learn a language with movies. I know a bunch of people that learned English with tv shows. I am one of them. :) You can’t reach fluency without work. Watching series, listening the radio, reading foreign articles. – your interests can lead you to accomplishment. Why don’t you read an article in another language ? :) And yes , as i said in the video : it’s essential to make mistakes. Don’t be ASHAMED. I was ashamed in school because i had some friends in my class that were perfectionists. I would rather say nothing than make mistakes in front of them. I guess I was so immature. If you worry constantly about your mistakes and if you only want to reach a certain ‘’language-perfection’’, if I can say so , YOU WILL MAKE EVEN MORE MISTAKES. That’s what I learned. Don’t be ashamed of your accent or anything... Just speak. Also , I can hear a lot of people saying : ‘’ Yes ,but I don’t have a private teacher’ ,‘’ If my parents had enough money to pay languages courses, I would’ve learned 10 languages ‘’ my language level in school is not high’ ‘ my teachers aren’t good’ ‘ etc.. I have friends from different social groups , and trust me, a lot of them didn’t have any of those things. . AND THEY ARE BILINGUAL. My favorite quote is : ‘‘ Every accomplishment starts with the decision to TRY‘’ – this quote doesn’t say : ‘’every accomplishment starts with wealthy parents or great highschool ’’ When I say that ,my purpose is not to sound wise. That’s just true ! It’s never a matter of money. A friend ,from my neighbourhood, wasn’t rich. His parents were social workers. He studied hard , applied for a local Belgrade College..Asked for scolarship. Got it. 4 years later ,He asked for scolarship abroad. He went to the States.. Did his master and now works for a great company and earns a lot of money. I NEVER said that learning a language was or will be easy. I will never say it. Nothing in life is easy but some improvements can be made with WORK. ( I’m sure that everyone knows that ) :) My friends always told me that I should make this video and share my story. And here it is, i’ve made it. :) There are mistakes but that was my intention : I wanted to be natural and to improvize. Also , i really wanted to see myself , my faces reaction and have fun with improvisation ..to be honest, i love to laugh about myself once in a while. ( Even though, when I speak french, I’m completely serious about the bullies ) - PS : if anyone from my old school reads this, please know that i felt it that way. Maybe it wasn’t your intention. I learned Brazilian Portuguese because: I love its sound, wonderful Brazilian smiling people, the country, the music, the nature and because I'd like to live there one day. Q: You didn't learn Greek! You should be ashamed of yourself. A: I got about 50 similar comments. I have no intelligent answer for this. People help me out:) Q: Why didn't you learn Arabic? Armenian? Hindi? Indonesian? European Portuguese? Greek?... I'm dissapointed. A: I never had a good reason or interest. Q: Were you ever interested in learning Scandinavian languages? A: Originally no, because I never had a chance or good reasons to learn them, plus it's too cold for me up there, but recently I read a book by Stieg Larsson and got a bit interested, so maybe I will. Q: Great Chinese but you speak with a Taiwanese accent. A: I lived in Taiwan for 5 years. I don't know how to speak in any other way. Q: The use of the word 'geil' in the German part was inappropriate/wrong/off. A: It was a bit off, you're right. I learned German when I was a teenager and didn't use it since. What Serbian sounds like to foreigners/kako srpski jezik zvuči strancima
follow me on Twitter https://twitter.com/ShunfuSha I asked some Canadian students what Serbian sounds like to them. I started by playing them the audio from the a of a Serbian TV show. Then I asked them to guess which language was in the sample played to them. After a few guesses I gave them visual clues from the video so they could see the script and ethnicity of the people in the sample video. Most of them thought it was one of the romance languages, like Spanish or Italian. In fact, I also thought the first few seconds of the clip sounded like a romance language. Finally, I asked them to imitate what they have heard for native Serbian speakers to hear what their language sounds like to foreigners. This segment took some convincing because the subjects did not want to offend anyone or... -

I asked some Canadian students what Serbian sounds like to them. I started by playing them the audio from the a of a Serbian TV show. Then I asked them to guess which language was in the sample played to them. After a few guesses I gave them visual clues from the video so they could see the script and ethnicity of the people in the sample video.
Most of them thought it was one of the romance languages, like Spanish or Italian. In fact, I also thought the first few seconds of the clip sounded like a romance language.
Finally, I asked them to imitate what they have heard for native Serbian speakers to hear what their language sounds like to foreigners. This segment took some convincing because the subjects did not want to offend anyone or seem racist. Therefore please do not blame them if you are offended, I asked them to do it and most of them did it reluctantly.
I used "Miljana Gavrilović - Tačno 9 (4.3.2014)" as the sample.

In my first video about Serbian I played a clip of Serbian to see if people could identify the language in the clip. In this one I started by asking people for their impression on Serbian. Most said Serbian sounds like Russian. Then I played them a clip of Serbian to see if it was what they thought Serbian would sound like. I want to make myself clear on some points and say things that I didn’t mention :
When I cite ‘’the baby example ‘’, at the end of the video ‘’ : A baby never learns by heart : I am / You are /She is /We are /they Are’’. Don’t get me wrong !
You have to learn verbs by heart when you start to learn a language. That’s the regular procedure. Of course !..but after.. when you start to speak the language : comprehension is essential.
I said it that way because i can see a lot of people learning grammar,verbs,tenses and after using them without knowing WHY is this specific tense or word used (for example)
FLUENCY is reached with COMPREHENSION.
To put it simply, every language is different. For example, French and Spanish are two latin languages but they are not the same.
Every single time , when i’m improving my languages, i am trying to understand the language and its specifics. Every polyglot friend that I have..is doing the same thing. It’s just a matter of practice and LOVE. Yes, love.
Every person is different : someone will understand it with listening , someone will manage his/her skills with talking and someone will study hard in order to understand. As I said, nothing is given for granted. Behind every great talent : there is HARDWORK and hard work can surpass talent. Trust me. ( I’m sure that you’ve already heard that !) :)
Therefore, to reach fluency : talk / listen/ read. Find your own way.. I mean you can learn a language with movies. I know a bunch of people that learned English with tv shows. I am one of them. :)
You can’t reach fluency without work. Watching series, listening the radio, reading foreign articles. –
your interests can lead you to accomplishment. Why don’t you read an article in another language ? :)
And yes , as i said in the video : it’s essential to make mistakes. Don’t be ASHAMED. I was ashamed in school because i had some friends in my class that were perfectionists. I would rather say nothing than make mistakes in front of them. I guess I was so immature.
If you worry constantly about your mistakes and if you only want to reach a certain ‘’language-perfection’’, if I can say so , YOU WILL MAKE EVEN MORE MISTAKES.
That’s what I learned. Don’t be ashamed of your accent or anything... Just speak.
Also , I can hear a lot of people saying : ‘’ Yes ,but I don’t have a private teacher’ ,‘’ If my parents had enough money to pay languages courses, I would’ve learned 10 languages ‘’ my language level in school is not high’ ‘ my teachers aren’t good’ ‘ etc..
I have friends from different social groups , and trust me, a lot of them didn’t have any of those things. . AND THEY ARE BILINGUAL.
My favorite quote is : ‘‘ Every accomplishment starts with the decision to TRY‘’ – this quote doesn’t say : ‘’every accomplishment starts with wealthy parents or great highschool ’’
When I say that ,my purpose is not to sound wise. That’s just true ! It’s never a matter of money.
A friend ,from my neighbourhood, wasn’t rich. His parents were social workers. He studied hard , applied for a local Belgrade College..Asked for scolarship. Got it. 4 years later ,He asked for scolarship abroad. He went to the States.. Did his master and now works for a great company and earns a lot of money.
I NEVER said that learning a language was or will be easy. I will never say it. Nothing in life is easy but some improvements can be made with WORK. ( I’m sure that everyone knows that ) :)
My friends always told me that I should make this video and share my story. And here it is, i’ve made it. :)
There are mistakes but that was my intention : I wanted to be natural and to improvize. Also , i really wanted to see myself , my faces reaction and have fun with improvisation
..to be honest, i love to laugh about myself once in a while.
( Even though, when I speak french, I’m completely serious about the bullies ) - PS : if anyone from my old school reads this, please know that i felt it that way. Maybe it wasn’t your intention. I guess we were all immature.

A: I don't think there was a starting moment in my life. I grew up with 2-3 native languages and spoke 5 at an almost native level by the time I was 13 and just continued learning languages here and there as I grew up. As for how long it took me, it took me my entire life.
Q: Could you give me some tips to learn language XYZ?
A: Sure. I have a blog where I wrote probably everything I think about language learning (http://www.foreverastudent.com). Feel free to check it out. I could write here too but I would only be repeating myself. I also made a lot of videos about language learning on this channel.
Q: How long does it take you to learn a new language?
A: It depends on the language. Also it is difficult to tell what it means to 'learn a language'. To get to a C1 level in Russian it took me about 3 months, to do the same thing in Chinese about 7-8 years.

A: There is no secret, only passion, lots of time spent on practice, good conditions and a bit of talent.
Q: Where are you from?
A: I was born and lived most of my life in Slovakia.
Q: You made a mistake in the French part. It shouldn't be 'ce video' it should be 'cette video'.
A: Thank you, I'll remember.
Q: You made a mistake in the Serbian part. It should't be 'kuči' but 'kući'.
A: Thank you. I realized it the moment I said it.
Q: The Spanish part was too short.
A: I know. I'll make a video where I speak only Spanish next time.
Q: You don't speak Portuguese, you speak Brazilian. Why did you learn that ugly Brazilian Portuguese and not the real Portuguese from Portugal?
A: I must've gotten about 100 comments like this and worse. I honestly don't understand why all the hate against Brazilian Portuguese from Portugal. I just felt silly writing 'Brazilian' instead of 'Portuguese' especially since as far as I know the official language of Brazil is called Portuguese, not Brazilian. It's like saying I speak 'American' instead of 'English'. But, lesson learned, next time I will proudly say I learned 'Brazilian Portuguese'. I learned Brazilian Portuguese because: I love its sound, wonderful Brazilian smiling people, the country, the music, the nature and because I'd like to live there one day.
Q: You didn't learn Greek! You should be ashamed of yourself.
A: I got about 50 similar comments. I have no intelligent answer for this. People help me out:)
Q: Why didn't you learn Arabic? Armenian? Hindi? Indonesian? European Portuguese? Greek?... I'm dissapointed.
A: I never had a good reason or interest.
Q: Were you ever interested in learning
Scandinavian languages?
A: Originally no, because I never had a chance or good reasons to learn them, plus it's too cold for me up there, but recently I read a book by Stieg Larsson and got a bit interested, so maybe I will.
Q: Great Chinese but you speak with a Taiwanese accent.
A: I lived in Taiwan for 5 years. I don't know how to speak in any other way.
Q: The use of the word 'geil' in the German part was inappropriate/wrong/off.
A: It was a bit off, you're right. I learned German when I was a teenager and didn't use it since. I said the word without thinking too much. It's definitely not that I used it on purpose to sound cool.
