In which John Green teaches you a little bit about drought, which is a natural weather phenomenon, and famine, which is almost always the result of human activity. Throughout human history, when food shortages strike humanity, there was food around. There was just a failure to connect those people with the food that would keep them alive. There are a lot of reasons that food distribution breaks down, and John is going to teach you about them in the context of the late-19th century famines that struck British India.

Mark Davis reports on the devastating famine in North Korea of 1997, confirming the extent of the food crisis, and that international aid did not get through to the people who need it most.
He captures a rare insight into the negotiations between CARE and the government Relief Committee, who complain CARE is not helping enough. The obsessively secretive government wants to direct all aid to the fertile rice bowl areas around the capital, because productivity here is highest. Then they will be able to feed the starving in the country's north. Williamson disagrees and is granted a rare permit to travel north to judge for himself. The team break the schedule and visit a nursery of their choosing. Here the hungry children are lacklustre and silent. Officially banned from filming in hospitals, desperate doctors allow the camera in. Hungry mothers are supposed to supply food for their children. A family with no men starve more than their more productive neighbours. If you don't work, it seems, you don't eat. This is no socialist famine. The government says the north is not a farming area and shouldn't get aid first. CARE says aid should go to the starving.

The worst drought in 60 years has thrown some 13 million people across the Horn of Africa into crisis.
In Somalia, ravaged by two decades of conflict, the consequences have been disastrous. For over six months, aid agencies on the ground sounded the alarm that a major drought and famine was on the horizon.
Then in July and August, the world watched and international aid agencies scrambled as tens of thousands of Somalis fled famine and fighting in the devastated Southern part of the country, controlled by the armed group al-Shabab. And they continued to flee - to the Somali capital of Mogadishu, and refugee camps in Kenya and Ethiopia - in the following months, when the world seemed to lose interest.
Tens of thousands of Somalis have died and the UN has warned that three quarters of a million more are at risk of dying before the end of the year.
Somalia's weak Transitional Federal Government, the Obama administration, and the United Nations have all blamed the anti-government group al-Shabab for restricting international aid operations in the areas they control. But is al-Shabab the only reason a drought and food crisis has turned into a deadly famine?
In the first of a two-part series examining the US response to drought and hunger in the Horn of Africa, Fault Lines travels to Mogadishu to meet refugees who have fled to the most war-ravaged city in the world to escape a worse fate, and the aid and medical workers struggling to help them. We examine the legacy of US engagement in Somalia and its efforts to address the current crisis.
Has aid in this region of the world become politicised? And has Washington's pre-occupation with terrorism in the Horn of Africa contributed to the deadly consequences of this disaster?

A famine is a widespread scarcity of food, caused by several factors including crop failure, overpopulation, or government policies. This phenomenon is usually accompanied or followed by regional malnutrition, starvation, epidemic, and increased mortality. Nearly every continent in the world has experienced a period of famine throughout history. Many countries continue to have extreme cases of famine.
Emergency measures in relieving famine primarily include providing deficient micronutrients, such as vitamins and minerals, through fortified sachet powders or directly through supplements. The famine relief model increasingly used by aid groups calls for giving cash or cash vouchers to the hungry to pay local farmers instead of buying food from donor countries, often required by law, as it wastes money on transport costs, but more importantly, it perpetuates the cycle of dependency on foreign imports rather than helping to create real local stability through agricultural abundance. Such independence however does rest upon local conditions of soil, water, temperature and so on.

19841985 famine in Ethiopia The 19841985 famine in Ethiopia was a widespread famine affecting the inhabitants of today's Eritrea and Ethiopia. Four Ethiopian provinces -- Gojjam, Hararghe, Tigray, and Wollo -- all received record low rainfalls in those years. The effects of this low rainfall were exacerbated by lack of adequate government preparations, as well as the increasing drain on government revenues by various insurgencies. In the north, the insurgency of the Tigrayan People's Liberation Front and the government's counterinsurgency was the ultimate cause of the famine, though the failure of the short rains in 1984 was the proximate cause. In the south, a separate and simultaneous cause was the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) insurgency.[2] In 1984, President Mengistu Haile Mariam announced that 46% of the Ethiopian Gross National Product would be allocated to military spending, creating the largest standing army in sub-Saharan Africa; meanwhile, the allocation for health in the government budget fell from 6% in 1973/1974 to 3% in 1990/1991. Although an estimated death toll of over one million from this famine is often quoted, this figure has been challenged due to "scant empirical evidence". Nevertheless, the magnitude has been well documented, and in addition to hundreds of thousands of famine-related deaths, millions of people became destitute. Media activity in the West, along with the size of the crisis, led to the "Do They Know It's Christmas?" charity single and the July 1985 concert Live Aid (raised $100m) , which elevated the international profile of the famine and helped secure international aid. However, in early March 2010, the BBC published evidence that the aid was diverted to buying weapons instead of feeding the starving [6]. Famine scholar Alex de Waal argues that, "The humanitarian effort prolonged the war, and with it, human suffering."

Mark Davis reports on the devastating famine in North Korea of 1997, confirming the extent of the food crisis, and that international aid did not get through to the people who need it most.
He captures a rare insight into the negotiations between CARE and the government Relief Committee, who complain CARE is not helping enough. The obsessively secretive government wants to direct all aid to the fertile rice bowl areas around the capital, because productivity here is highest. Then they will be able to feed the starving in the country's north. Williamson disagrees and is granted a rare permit to travel north to judge for himself. The team break the schedule and visit a nursery of their choosing. Here the hungry children are lacklustre and silent. Officially banned from filming in hospitals, desperate doctors allow the camera in. Hungry mothers are supposed to supply food for their children. A family with no men starve more than their more productive neighbours. If you don't work, it seems, you don't eat. This is no socialist famine. The government says the north is not a farming area and shouldn't get aid first. CARE says aid should go to the starving.

The worst drought in 60 years has thrown some 13 million people across the Horn of Africa into crisis.
In Somalia, ravaged by two decades of conflict, the consequences have been disastrous. For over six months, aid agencies on the ground sounded the alarm that a major drought and famine was on the horizon.
Then in July and August, the world watched and international aid agencies scrambled as tens of thousands of Somalis fled famine and fighting in the devastated Southern part of the country, controlled by the armed group al-Shabab. And they continued to flee - to the Somali capital of Mogadishu, and refugee camps in Kenya and Ethiopia - in the following months, when the world seemed to lose interest.
Tens of thousands of Somalis have died and the UN has warned that three quarters of a million more are at risk of dying before the end of the year.
Somalia's weak Transitional Federal Government, the Obama administration, and the United Nations have all blamed the anti-government group al-Shabab for restricting international aid operations in the areas they control. But is al-Shabab the only reason a drought and food crisis has turned into a deadly famine?
In the first of a two-part series examining the US response to drought and hunger in the Horn of Africa, Fault Lines travels to Mogadishu to meet refugees who have fled to the most war-ravaged city in the world to escape a worse fate, and the aid and medical workers struggling to help them. We examine the legacy of US engagement in Somalia and its efforts to address the current crisis.

The 19841985 famine in Ethiopia was a widespread famine affecting the inhabitants of today's Eritrea and Ethiopia. Four Ethiopian provinces -- Gojjam, Hararghe, Tigray, and Wollo -- all received record low rainfalls in those years. The effects of this low rainfall were exacerbated by lack of adequate government preparations, as well as the increasing drain on government revenues by various insurgencies. In the north, the insurgency of the Tigrayan People's Liberation Front and the government's counterinsurgency was the ultimate cause of the famine, though the failure of the short rains in 1984 was the proximate cause. In the south, a separate and simultaneous cause was the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) insurgency.[2] In 1984, President Mengistu Haile Mariam announced that 46% of the Ethiopian Gross National Product would be allocated to military spending, creating the largest standing army in sub-Saharan Africa; meanwhile, the allocation for health in the government budget fell from 6% in 1973/1974 to 3% in 1990/1991. Although an estimated death toll of over one million from this famine is often quoted, this figure has been challenged due to "scant empirical evidence". Nevertheless, the magnitude has been well documented, and in addition to hundreds of thousands of famine-related deaths, millions of people became destitute.
Media activity in the West, along with the size of the crisis, led to the "Do They Know It's Christmas?" charity single and the July 1985 concert Live Aid (raised $100m) , which elevated the international profile of the famine and helped secure international aid. However, in early March 2010, the BBC published evidence that the aid was diverted to buying weapons instead of feeding the starving [6]. Famine scholar Alex de Waal argues that, "The humanitarian effort prolonged the war, and with it, human suffering."

Glass sky-rise blocks dwarf traditional stone settlements, and with daybreak hundreds of builders arrive at the citys construction sites. But on the outskirts is a very different scene. A long queue is forming here. Word has spread that cheap, government-subsidised food will be sold here. We ask one man if he has trouble feeding himself. Yes, he says, because of the Food Shortage. Just very recently we hit the worst, local woman Valerie Browning tells us. But the Developed World, the Ethiopian government and even many aid agencies want Ethiopia to be a success story. That means the real story often goes untold. At the breadline government security arrives and forces us to leave. This happens every day to news crews in Ethiopia. L'équipe d'ARTE Reportage s'est rendue dans l'Est du pays, dans la province de Diapaga, sévèrement touchée par la sécheresse.
Dans cette région rurale et isolée, peuplée de 45.000 habitants, la production céréalière, habituellement excédentaire, a chuté de 32%. Résultat : une flambée des prix renforcée par la hausse générale des cours mondiaux.
Ici, les familles sont loin de tout et plus pauvres que la moyenne nationale, avec 8 enfants à nourrir en moyenne, contre 6 dans le reste du pays.
Les taux d'admission d'enfants souffrant de malnutrition dans les centres nutritionnels ont doublé. Les autorités locales et les ONG tirent la sonnette d'alarme.

Relaxation is not simply important for your physical self, it will positively affect your spirit, your mind, your body and your overall well being.
Those unable to relax, often suffer from an inability to focus their concentration. This exercise will allow you to do this.
To be effective, this exercise will require you to have no direct distractions. Nothing that will divide your attention in any fashion, you will want to find a chair or couch that is comfortable. Turn off the television or radio, turn down the lights and relax. This is not a 'screamer' - it is an actual relaxation exercise....
