(Nigeria Food) Benue state is known as the "Food Basket of Nigeria" and celebrated this year with an enormous food festival. The tastes, smells and flavours of an array of classic Nigerian food dishes were accompanied by delicious servings of local dancing, drummers and celebrated musicians.
But the stars of the show are the women from across Benue who took part in the festival's cooking competition.
"For women -- cooking is like a natural thing," says Doosuur Tor- Anyiin, a Benue state journalist and cook in the competition.
Hundreds of women attended to watch the competition. The prizes included: a new car for first prize (plus 500,000N), a motorbike for second (plus 300,000N), and a deep freezer for third place (plus 200,000N).
"I learnt how to cook when I was fourteen years old and I can't quantify," explained Doosuur Tor- Anyiin.
(Nigerian Food) Doosuur cooked a delicious soup recipe from her local area -- it's called Ikyegh Shashwa -- and the ingredients include chicken, onions, pepper, local seed for flavouring, ginger, locust beans and black eyed pepper.
"It all goes into the soup," she says.
But she had plenty of competition in the event (organised by Unilever in partnership with the office of the first lady of Benue state) as women from across the state vied with their own Nigerian Food dishes.
"I have been cooking for my husband and he has never one day said madam you have not cooked well today," said Mwuese, wiping her brow as she cooked her Okra and vegetable soup. "So I'm highly confident that I will win!"

The Benue River (French: la Bénoué) is the major tributary of the Niger River. The river is approximately 1,400 km long and is almost entirely navigable during the summer months. As a result, it is an important transportation route in the regions through which it flows.
It rises in the Adamawa Plateau of northern Cameroon, from where it flows west, and through the town of Garoua and Lagdo Reservoir, into Nigeria south of the Mandara mountains, and through Jimeta, Ibi and Makurdi before meeting the Niger at Lokoja.
Large tributaries are the Gongola River and the Mayo Kébbi, which connects it with the Logone River (part of the Lake Chad system) during floods. Other tributaries are Taraba River and River Katsina Ala.
At the point of confluence the Benue exceeds the Niger by volume (mean discharge before 1960: 3400 m³/s vs. 2500 m³/s). During the following decades the runoff of both rivers decreased markedly due to irrigation.

Herdsmen kill at least 96 people in Benue state
At least 96 people were killed in Benue state in Nigeria's middle belt region when several villages were attacked by suspected Fulani herdsmen, a state police spokesman and an army source said on Tuesday. Hundreds are killed each year in clashes pitting the semi-nomadic, cattle-herding Fulani people against more settled communities that practice a mix of farming and cattle rearing, driven by disputes centred around land use. A senior military officer said fighting around five villages lasted several days in the Logo local government area of Benue. Benue Valley is an Evidence Based Advocacy Documentary on the crises between Benue TIV Farmers and Normadic Fulani Herdsmen in Benue State Nigeria. An underreported conflict that erupted early 2011 killing over 1000 people and destroyed properties worth billions of Naira.
In this Documentary, we strived to leverage forward-looking efforts in community leaders through targeted interactions in conflict stricken areas of Benue state in order to build their capacity to resolve conflicts using dialogue and to address human rights issues, while simultaneously drawing relevant regional actors into actions
Our objective is to introduce to Nigeria, dialogue procedure as the only sustainable approach towards conflict resolution and hope that the conflicts between Farmers and Cattle Herders in Nigeria will be approached in the same manner using standard frameworks such as this

At least 96 people were killed in Benue state in Nigeria's middle belt region when several villages were attacked by suspected Fulani herdsmen, a state police spokesman and an army source said on Tuesday.
Hundreds are killed each year in clashes pitting the semi-nomadic, cattle-herding Fulani people against more settled communities that practice a mix of farming and cattle rearing, driven by disputes centred around land use.
A senior military officer said fighting around five villages lasted several days in the Logo local government area of Benue.
Police spokesman Austine Ezeani said a mobile police unit was deployed to the area.
The unrest is often seen as sectarian in nature since Fulanis are Muslim and the communities with which they are in conflict in central Nigeria - where the country's mostly Christian south and Muslim north meet - tend to be Christian.
Nigerian troops fought militiamen in early May after dozens were killed in villages on the border of middle belt states Plateau and Taraba.
