Ernest Bevin (9 March 1881 – 14 April 1951) was a British trade union leader and Labour politician. He co-founded and served as general secretary of the powerful Transport and General Workers' Union from 1922 to 1940, as Minister of Labour in the war-time coalition government, and as Foreign Secretary in the post-war Labour Government he supported the creation of NATO.
Bevin was born in the village of Winsford in Somerset, England, to Diana Bevin who, since 1877, had described herself as a widow. His father is unknown. After his mother's death in 1889, the young Bevin lived with his half-sister's family, moving to Morchard Bishop in Devon. He had little formal education, having briefly attended two village schools and then Hayward's School, Crediton, starting in 1890 and leaving in 1892. He later recalled being asked as a child to read the newspaper aloud for the benefit of adults in his family who were illiterate. At the age of eleven, he went to work as a labourer, then as a lorry driver in Bristol, where he joined the Bristol Socialist Society. In 1910 he became secretary of the Bristol branch of the Dockers' Union, and in 1914 he became a national organiser for the union.

Imran Sanaullah the inaugural winner of the Naz Bokhari Award presented the Ernest Bevin College Naz Bokhari Award 2015 to Viknesh Jeevachandran Imran gave an inspirational speech to the sixth formers, before announcing the winner, he talked how the Naz Bokhari Award had changed his life and said anything is possible if you work hard enough. He then presented Viknesh with a crystal award and cheque for £500 to support him in his first year at university. The Ernest Bevin College Naz Bokhari Award is an annual award for students who achieve university acceptance despite adversity, who had to strive harder than others due to personal or social issues. Einat Wilf is a center-left-wing, peace-oriented Israeli scholar and activist who is committed to achieving justice for the Palestinians - and for Israel. The talk explains what she has learned about the core of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict - and how "Western" intervention is making it worse. There are lots of "aha" examples in the talk - and she is a fascinating, compelling speaker. Here is a dry resumé of the main argument:
The British foreign minister, Ernest Bevin, gave a speech in February, 1947, in which he explained why the UK was giving up the Mandate for Palestine (that is, the part lying west of the River Jordan, as the rest had been given in 1922 to the Hashemites as TransJordan - today's Jordan).
Bevin said that there is an irreconcilable conflict between core principles. The Jews want a sovereign state in their ancient homeland. The Arabs would rather die than accept Jewish sovereignty anywhere in the region - regardless of the size of Jewish state. After many years of working for peace, Einat Wilf has concluded that Bevin's analysis has been the best predictor of actual behavior: Arab leaders have rejected every partition proposal up to this day, including one from the 1930s, which only gave the Jews 10% of the area from the River Jordan to the Mediterranean Sea.
Deep down, many, if not most Israelis and Palestinians want the whole area "from the river to the sea" to themselves, and they wish that the other claimants would disappear. Einat Wilf understands these deep-seated desires - on both sides. But these desires live in the realm of dreams. She believes that if one side wins, the tragedy for the other will be much greater than past tragedies related to the conflict have been.
This is a widely shared belief. So many Israelis and Palestinians know that the land will most likely have to be divided. However, the division cannot be forced. It cannot happen until the people and their leaders themselves are so tired of the conflict - whether it is expressed in violence, diplomatic maneuvering, or propaganda - that they are motivated to solve it themselves.
But the "international community" is trying to force a solution, and in doing so is worsening and prolonging the conflict.
On the one hand, the "international community" is very much aware that Jewish settlements and other activity outside of the 1949 armistice lines (the "green lines") keep an impossible Israeli dream alive (this dream is impossible even though the green lines were never intended to become actual borders). So huge - and growing - amounts of pressure are being applied to Israel about this issue.
On the other hand, the "international community" pays no attention to how the impossible Palestinian dream is kept alive. This is most evident in UNRWA - the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine refugees. UNRWA goes so far in keeping the dream alive that it classifies all descendents of 1949-49 Arab Palestine refugees as refugees themselves, even if they have citizenship somewhere. This is why there are five million so-called refugees, of which less than 100 thousand are actual survivors. And the funding is mostly provided by Western democracies and NGOs.
Einat Wilf explains how UNRWA and the organizations it cooperates with fuel the flames of the Palestinian "river-to-the-sea" dream of millions of people. Many NGOs and Western democracies are not aware of what is going on; and many of those who are aware of it do not understand that the brain-washing of Palestinians, especially young people, is actually creating a much worse barrier to a solution than settlements are.
As long as the "international community" continues appeasing the Palestinians while excoriating Israel, they are creating an uneven playing field that only prolongs the conflict.

Abdullah I bin al-Hussein, King of Jordan (Arabic: عبد الله الأول بن الحسين, Abd Allāh ibn al-Husayn, February 1882 – 20 July 1951) born in Mecca, Hejaz, Ottoman Empire (in modern-day Saudi Arabia) was the second of three sons of Hussein bin Ali, Sharif and Emir of Mecca and his first wife Abdiyya bint Abdullah (d. 1886). He was educated in Constantinople and Hejaz. From 1909 to 1914, Abdullah sat in the Ottoman legislature, as deputy for Mecca, but allied with Britain during World War I. Between 1916 to 1918, working with the British guerrilla leader T. E. Lawrence, he played a key role as architect and planner of the Great Arab Revolt against Ottoman rule, leading guerrilla raids on garrisons.[3] He was the ruler of Transjordan and its successor state, Jordan, from 1921 to 1951[4]—first as Emir under a British Mandate from 1921 to 1946, then as King of an independent nation from 1946 until his assassination in 1951.
Abdullah, alone among the Arab leaders of his generation, was considered a moderate by the West. It is possible that he might have been willing to sign a separate peace agreement with Israel, but for the Arab League's militant opposition. Because of his dream for a Greater Syria comprising the borders of what was then Transjordan, Syria, Lebanon, and the British Mandate for Palestine under a Hashemite dynasty with "a throne in Damascus," many Arab countries distrusted Abdullah and saw him as both "a threat to the independence of their countries and they also suspected him of being in cahoots with the enemy" and in return, Abdullah distrusted the leaders of other Arab countries.
Abdullah supported the Peel Commission in 1937, which proposed that Palestine be split up into a small Jewish state (20 percent of the British Mandate for Palestine) and the remaining land be annexed into Transjordan. The Arabs within Palestine and the surrounding Arab countries objected to the Peel Commission while the Jews accepted it reluctantly.[15] Ultimately, the Peel Commission was not adopted. In 1947, when the UN supported partition of Palestine into one Jewish and one Arab state, Abdullah was the only Arab leader supporting the decision.[1]
In 1946–48, Abdullah actually supported partition in order that the Arab allocated areas of the British Mandate for Palestine could be annexed into Transjordan. Abdullah went so far as to have secret meetings with the Jewish Agency (future Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir was among the delegates to these meetings) that came to a mutually agreed upon partition plan independently of the United Nations in November 1947.[16][17] On 17 November 1947, in a secret meeting with Meir, Abdullah stated that he wished to annex all of the Arab parts as a minimum, and would prefer to annex all of Palestine.[18] This idea of secret Zionist-Hashemite negotiations in 1947 was expanded upon by New Historian Avi Shlaim in his book Collusion Across The Jordan: King Abdullah, the Zionist Movement, and the Partition of Palestine. This partition plan was supported by British Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin who preferred to see Abdullah's territory increased at the expense of the Palestinians rather than risk the creation of a Palestinian state headed by the Mufti of Jerusalem Mohammad Amin al-Husayni.
The claim has, however, been strongly disputed by Israeli historian Efraim Karsh. In an article in Middle East Quarterly, he alleged that "extensive quotations from the reports of all three Jewish participants [at the meetings] do not support Shlaim's account...the report of Ezra Danin and Eliahu Sasson on the Golda Meir meeting (the most important Israeli participant and the person who allegedly clinched the deal with Abdullah) is conspicuously missing from Shlaim's book, despite his awareness of its existence".[20] According to Karsh, the meetings in question concerned "an agreement based on the imminent U.N. Partition Resolution, [in Meir's words] "to maintain law and order until the UN could establish a government in that area"; namely, a short-lived law enforcement operation to implement the UN Partition Resolution, not obstruct it".
