The vigesimal or base 20 numeral system is based on twenty (in the same way in which the ordinary decimal numeral system is based on ten).
In a vigesimal place system, twenty individual numerals (or digit symbols) are used, ten more than in the usual decimal system. One modern method of finding the extra needed symbols is to write ten as the letter A20 (the 20 means base-20), to write nineteen as J20, and the numbers between with the corresponding letters of the alphabet. This is similar to the common computer-science practice of writing hexadecimal numerals over 9 with the letters "A-F". Another method skips over the letter "I", in order to avoid confusion between I20 as eighteen and one, so that the number eighteen is written as J20, and nineteen is written as K20. The number twenty is written as 1020.
According to this notation:
In the rest of this article below, numbers are expressed in decimal notation, unless specified otherwise. For example, 10 means ten, 20 means twenty.
Francisco Morazan was a 1,442 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1922 as Arcadia by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, for German owners. She was sold in 1924 and renamed Elbing. She was seized by the Allies in the River Elbe, Germany in May 1945, passed to the United Kingdom's Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Congress. In 1946, she was allocated to the Norwegian Government and renamed Brunes.
Brunes was sold into merchant service in 1947 and renamed Skuld. In 1948, another sale saw her renamed Ringås. In 1958, she was sold to Liberia and renamed Los Mayas and then Francisco Morazan (for Francisco Morazán) the following year. She served until 29 November 1960 when she ran aground in Lake Michigan and was declared a total loss.
The ship was built in 1922 by Deutsche Werft AG, Hamburg, as yard number 19.
The ship was 234 feet 5 inches (71.45 m) long, with a beam of 36 feet 8 inches (11.18 m). She had a depth of 17 feet 9 inches (5.41 m), and a draught of 16 feet 6 1⁄2 inches (5.042 m). She had a GRT of 1,141 and a NRT of 747, with a DWT of 2,097.

Examine the sophisticated base 20 system developed by the ancient Maya, which included a value for zero.
NUS GEK1536 VIDEO PROJECT SCEIPT: The Maya had surprised achievement in architecture, mathematics and astronomy, and developed a complex culture centered on commerce, farming and religious beliefs. However, most of them were destroyed in 16th century when the Spanish conquered the Yucatan Peninsula. One of their fantastic inventions is the Vigesimal, also called base-20. Scientists believe that base 20 was invented because humans have 20 fingers and toes in total. Mayan numbers consists of three symbols, dot, bar and shell, relatively represents 1, 5 and 0. Here is a glance of Mayan numbers from 1 to 19. That the Maya had invented a symbol for 0 is probably the most important aspect of their mathematic system. Why? It’s because the value of a number is determined by the place where it app...

Fuente: Discovery Channel. Programa: Discovery en la Escuela.
