Act of God

An act of God is a legal term for events outside human control, such as sudden natural disasters, for which no one can be held responsible.

Contract law

In the law of contracts, an act of God may be interpreted as an implied defense under the rule of impossibility or impracticability. If so, the promise is discharged because of unforeseen occurrences, which were unavoidable and would result in insurmountable delay, expense, or other material breach.

An example scenario could assume that an opera singer and a concert hall have a contract. The singer promises to appear and perform at a certain time on a certain date. The hall promises to have the stage and audio equipment ready for her. However, a tornado destroys the hall a month before the concert is to take place. Of course, the hall is not responsible for the tornado. It may be impossible for the hall to rebuild in time to keep its promise. On the other hand, it may be possible but extraordinarily expensive to reconstruct on such short notice. The hall would argue that the tornado was an act of God and excuses its nonperformance via impossibility or impracticability.

Stuart Wilde

Stuart Wilde (24 September 1946 – 1 May 2013) was a British writer. Best known for his works on New Age, self-empowerment, and spirituality, he was also a lecturer, teacher, humorist, essayist, scriptwriter, lyricist, and music producer. He was the author of twenty books including the popular seriesThe Taos Quintet: Miracles, The Force, Affirmations, The Quickening, and The Trick to Money is Having Some.

Early life

Wilde was born in Farnham, England. He has a twin sister, Dee Dee, who became well known in Britain for her weekly appearances on Top of the Pops with the dance troupe Pan's People. He was educated at St. George's College, Weybridge, Surrey. After his schooling he joined the English Stage Company in Sloane Square, London. A year later he opened a jeans business in Carnaby Street London, at the height of the Swinging Sixties where he enjoyed considerable commercial success.

Career

He studied alternative religions and Taoist philosophy for five years from the age of twenty-eight, and when he was thirty-three, he emigrated to the United States of America where he lived in Laguna Beach, California with his first wife Cynthia. He wrote his first book, Miracles, in 1983.

That year our church was doing a Secret Santa and I told my mom we should buy some things to give donate. I didn't know this, but at the time, money was really tight for us, but we bought some things anyway. I remember on Christmas Eve my mom telling my brothers and me that we shouldn't feel sad if we didn't get a lot of stuff that year, because we didn't have a lot of money. Later that night, someone knocked on our door and dropped off a bag full of gifts for our whole family. I have always remembered that day.

It was clear then, as it is to this day, the consensus among most scholars is that the average length of a biblical generation is between 40-70 years and here's why: The Bible does not give a direct answer in regards to the actual length of a generation. We can derive some observations. Scripture shows that the length of a generation varies, depending on the historical period. Early history of man shows longer generations because people lived much longer. The New Testament opens with the genealogy from Abraham to Jesus Christ. At the conclusion of this genealogy, Matthew 1:17 states, “So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, from David until the captivity in Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the captivity in Babylon until the Christ are fourteen generations.” These three groupings are all considered fourteen generations. When looking at the average generation for each group, we find that the generation length differs. Some confuse life spans with generations. The average generation is the average age of parents at the time of birth of their children. When life span increases, so does the average length of generations. To show the extent of how life span varied over time, the average life span of the pre-Flood patriarchs was 912 years. The average lifespan from Shem to Peleg (contemporary of the Tower of Babel) diminished to 484 years, and from Peleg to Abraham, it diminished to 195 years. The average generation from Abraham to David (Matt. 1:17) was approximately 64 years, while the average generation for the other two groups was 38 years. The time span covered by each generation is not the emphasis, but rather THE FACT OF THE PASSING OF THE NUMBER OF SUCCESSIVE GENERATIONS. There are also other meanings for the term “generation.” For example, the “generation” that will see Christ return (Matt. 24:34) refers to those who will be alive at that time! Amen Come Lord Jesus, who is our great God and the Savior.
