The world's largest trebuchet siege engine at Warwick Castle in the midlands, fired daily and similar to the design of the smaller trebuchet at Dover castle. It stands 18 metres tall and weighs 22 tonnes, It uses a 5 tonne swinging counterweight on the end of the arm to fire rounds of 15kg in weight at up to 250 kmh (150 mph) but can cope with projectiles of up to ten times this weight!

This is a brief tutorial on trebuchet physics and useful tricks to make your trebuchet throw farther. Much of this isn't obvious if you're new to trebuchets and I overlooked many of the key energy transfer methods when I was starting out. Hopefully, this will help you optimize your trebuchet
In this tutorial, I discuss how to use sling stalls and CW-arm stalls to your advantage. Having a basic understanding of both is necessary when designing an efficient trebuchet.
For the purposes of the tutorial, I made a tabletop hanging counterweight trebuchet. This means that the tutorial will primarily focus on Hanging Counterweight trebuchets, but the concepts also apply to floating arm trebuchets (once you have the rail gaps worked out, a floating arm trebuchet is like a hanging counterweight trebuchet with greater fall distance and a vertical CW-arm stall point... hence, it is far more forgiving...)
Also briefly mentioned is the multiple rotations trebuchet, where a link is included....

My friend's daughter, who is also one of my karate students got to build a trebuchet for a class catapult contest at her school, so I offered to help. This is how it turned out. We need to add some heavier counterweights and it will fly much farther.
We got ideas for the design from this very helpful site:

Our model is about 2.5 times the size of the desktop trebuchet on that site.
I had a lot of fun building this, now I want to make a big one :-)

The trebuchet was only the most frightening of the weapons early European warriors employed in siege warfare. They also relied on battering rams, siege towers, tunnels - anything to gain access to a castle. Defenders, meanwhile, had a few tricks of their own.

Our biggest trebuchet is for throwing pumpkins. It is able to throw 8 pound pumpkins over 600 feet, lighter ones even further. The counterweight can range from 700 to 1100 pounds.

Our Guinness World Record "Largest trebuchet with projectile 20kg or larger". See page 200/201 of GBWR 2006 for proof. Weight 45 tonnes, counterweight 23 tonnes, release height of projectile 23m (75 ft). The car and boat together weighed 1300 kg and went 39m (128 ft).
The rope broke on the first trial. Cars don't throw well - they are too light and lose speed when the roof goes flat to the wind. A trebuchet (French trébuchet) is a siege engine that was employed in the Middle Ages. It is sometimes called a "counterweight trebuchet" or "counterpoise trebuchet" in order to distinguish it from an earlier weapon that has come to be called the "traction trebuchet", the original version with pulling men instead of a counterweight. The counterweight trebuchet appeared in both Christian and Muslim lands around the Mediterranean in the twelfth century. It could fling projectiles of up to three hundred and fifty pounds (140 kg) at high speeds into enemy fortifications.
The trebuchet did not become obsolete until the 15th century, well after the introduction of gunpowder, which appeared in Europe in second half of 13th century.
A trebuchet is a type of catapult that works by using the energy of a raised counterweight to throw the projectile. Initially, the sling, which has a pouch containing the projectile, is placed in a trough below the axle, which supports the beam. Upon releasing the trigger, the sling and the beam swing around toward the vertical position, where one end of the sling releases, opening the pouch and propelling the projectile towards the target. The stored energy of the counterweight is transferred efficiently to the projectile.

This is a brief tutorial on trebuchet physics and useful tricks to make your trebuchet throw farther. Much of this isn't obvious if you're new to trebuchets and I overlooked many of the key energy transfer methods when I was starting out. Hopefully, this will help you optimize your trebuchet
In this tutorial, I discuss how to use sling stalls and CW-arm stalls to your advantage. Having a basic understanding of both is necessary when designing an efficient trebuchet.
For the purposes of the tutorial, I made a tabletop hanging counterweight trebuchet. This means that the tutorial will primarily focus on Hanging Counterweight trebuchets, but the concepts also apply to floating arm trebuchets (once you have the rail gaps worked out, a floating arm trebuchet is like a hanging counterweight trebuchet with greater fall distance and a vertical CW-arm stall point... hence, it is far more forgiving...)
Also briefly mentioned is the multiple rotations trebuchet, where a link is included....

My friend's daughter, who is also one of my karate students got to build a trebuchet for a class catapult contest at her school, so I offered to help. This is how it turned out. We need to add some heavier counterweights and it will fly much farther.
We got ideas for the design from this very helpful site:

Our Guinness World Record "Largest trebuchet with projectile 20kg or larger". See page 200/201 of GBWR 2006 for proof. Weight 45 tonnes, counterweight 23 tonnes, release height of projectile 23m (75 ft). The car and boat together weighed 1300 kg and went 39m (128 ft).
The rope broke on the first trial. Cars don't throw well - they are too light and lose speed when the roof goes flat to the wind.
