TAROM's Airbus A318-111, an airplane just 7 years old, which deserves to be concidered as a special catch at the second St Maarten, Skiathos Airport. Apologies for the scratched windows - nevertheless a window view from TAROM's RO67 service from Bucharest Otopeni (OTP) to Dubai International (DXB). The airframe pictured was A310-325(ET) YR-LCB. The flight took place on January 8th, 2015 and is seen from seat 6H. This service was delayed twice. First the aircraft arrived over 1h late at the gate due to the drainage system being frozen after a night at -15C. Then during startup of #1 engine the start valve was also frozen and had to be opened manually by line maintenance. Eventually we departed 90mins late from Otopeni.

Flight ROT 371 took off from Bucharest-Otopeni runway 08R for a flight to Brussels. At 09:11 LT, climbing through 4500 feet, the Airbus began to descend again and finally entered a steep dive (80° nose-down) before crashing into a field. While climbing through 2000 feet at 350km/h the crew retracted flaps. At that time the auto throttles (on 'climb' mode) should have reduced power on both engines. But the right power lever (no. 2 engine) remained in take-off power setting. It took no. 1 power lever 42sec to move to idle power. During these 42 seconds an asymmetric thrust situation developed. The aircraft by then had past the 'OTR'-beacon and the crew had, according to SID procedures, begun a 25° left turn onto a 327° heading for the Strejnic 'STJ' VOR/DME beacon. Due to the thrust asymmetry the nose-up pitch of 18° decreased to 0°. The aircraft rolled through 170° laterally and finally crashed into an open field and exploded on impact.
PROBABLE CAUSE: Lack of crew response to an extreme nose-down attitude. The investigation committee concluded that the captain was either incapacitated or absent from his seat, because he had not said anything while the critical situation was developing. Just before impact the first officer expressed his concern about the situation (either the captain's condition or the aircraft's attitude) and attempted a recovery.

S.C. Compania Națională de Transporturi Aeriene Române TAROM S.A., doing business as TAROM Romanian Air Transport, is the flag carrier and oldest currently operating airline of Romania. The brand name is an acronym for Romanian: Transporturile Aeriene ROMâne (Romanian Air Transport). The head office of the airline is located inside the International Departures Terminal of Henri Coandă International Airport (formerly known as Otopeni Airport) in Otopeni, Ilfov County, near Bucharest. Its main base is Henri Coandă International Airport.
The airline operates scheduled domestic services and international services to 53 destinations in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. With 26 aircraft, TAROM's fleet is the largest among the Romanian airlines. Ninety-five percent (95%) of TAROM is owned by the Romanian Government (Ministry of Transport). The airline transported over 1.7 million passengers in 2009 and 2.2 million in 2010 (24% increase). The airline joined SkyTeam on 25 June 2010.
Romania's first national airline was founded in 1920 under the name CFRNA - (French-Romanian Company for Air Navigation). The airline used French-built Potez 15 aircraft for its passenger/mail service between Paris and Bucharest via several cities in Central Europe. In 1925, the city of Galaţi became the first destination in Romania served by regular flights followed, from 24 June 1926, by an extended service to Iaşi and Chişinău. Ten de Havilland DH.9 and five Ansaldo A.300, in addition to the Potez aircraft, operated the service. In 1928 the airline changed its name to SNNA - Serviciul Naţional de Navigaţie Aeriană (The National Air Navigation Service). In 1930, the company adopted the name LARES - Liniile Aeriene Române Exploatate de Stat (Romanian Air Line State Run) while 1937 saw the merger of LARES with its competitor, SARTA (Societatea Anonimă Română de Transporturi Aeriene).

Flight ROT 371 took off from Bucharest-Otopeni runway 08R for a flight to Brussels. At 09:11 LT, climbing through 4500 feet, the Airbus began to descend again and finally entered a steep dive (80° nose-down) before crashing into a field. While climbing through 2000 feet at 350km/h the crew retracted flaps. At that time the auto throttles (on 'climb' mode) should have reduced power on both engines. But the right power lever (no. 2 engine) remained in take-off power setting. It took no. 1 power lever 42sec to move to idle power. During these 42 seconds an asymmetric thrust situation developed. The aircraft by then had past the 'OTR'-beacon and the crew had, according to SID procedures, begun a 25° left turn onto a 327° heading for the Strejnic 'STJ' VOR/DME beacon. But the right power lever (no. 2 engine) remained in take-off power setting. It took no. 1 power lever 42sec to move to idle power. During these 42 seconds an asymmetric thrust situation developed. The investigation committee concluded that the captain was either incapacitated or absent from his seat, because he had not said anything while the critical situation was developing. Just before impact the first officer expressed his concern about the situation (either the captain's condition or the aircraft's attitude) and attempted a recovery.

TAROM Boeing 737În 1925, oraşul Galaţi a devenit prima destinaţie internă românească pentru linia aeriană, iar în 1926, numele liniei a fost schimbat în Compania Internaţională De Navigaţie Aeriană (CIDNA). În 1930 numele a fost schimbat iar în LARES (Liniile Aeriene Române Exploatate de Stat), iar în 1937, LARES a fuzionat cu principalul său adversar, SARTA (Societatea Română de Transporturi Aeriene).
După al doilea război mondial
Pe 8 august 1945, s-a înfiinţat compania aeriană TARS (Transporturile Aeriene Româno-Sovietice). Compania era în subordinea atât a guvernului român, cât şi a celui sovietic. Începând cu data de 1 februarie 1946 au fost înfiinţate zboruri interne de la aeroportul Băneasa din Bucureşti. În data de 18 septembrie 1954 compania a devenit TAROM (Transporturile Aeriene ROMâne). În decurs de 6 ani compania a reuşit să se conecteze la princiaplele capitale europene. Încă 6 ani au trebuit până la primul zbor trans-atlantic. În 1974 TAROM a început zboruri către Aeroportul Internaţional JFK din New York şi spre Australia, zburând la Sydney, via Calcutta.
TAROM Boeing 737Dacă în anii 1950 şi 1960, România fiind o ţară din blocul estic, TAROM a fost forţată să cumpere doar aeronave sovietice. După 1970, alături de JAT, a fost printre puţinele linii aeriene din blocul estic care a introdus şi avioane produse în SUA şi Europa de Vest, printre care BAC 1-11 şi Boeing 707. În anii 1980, TAROM a achiziţionat cele câteva aeronave Rombac produse sub licenţă britanică în România.
În anii '90
După căderea Uniunii Sovietice, TAROM a putut să cumpere mai multe avioane produse în occident. În 1993, TAROM efectua zboruri din România către Montreal şi Bangkok folosind aeronavele Ilyushin Il-62 şi Airbus A310. În anii '90, TAROM şi-a înlocuit flota de Boeing 707 cu trei aeronave noi, de tip (Airbus A310)
În secolul al XXI-lea
Între 2000 şi 2003, TAROM a sistat cursele spre Bangkok, Montreal, Chicago, Beijing, New York, Craiova, Tulcea, Caransebeş şi Constanţa pentru că nu erau rentabile. Anul 2004 a fost primul an care a adus profit companiei din ultimii 10 ani.

1920 Compania Franceză-Română pentru Navigaţia Aeriană
1954 TAROM
S.C. Transporturile Aeriene Române S.A. (TAROM) este principala companie aeriană din România, cu o îndelungată tradiţie în domeniu. 2004 este primul an în care compania a avut profit, revenindu-şi după o perioadă foarte dificilă, în care a suferit pierderi din cauza rutelor neprofitabile.
Începuturile
TAROM îşi are originile în anul 1920. Acela a fost anul în care s-a creat Compania Franco-Română Pentru Navigaţie Aeriană (CFRNA). Compania folosea avioane franceze POTEZ pentru a transporta călători, marfă şi poştă, de la Paris la Bucureşti, via multe oraşe din Europa.
TAROM Boeing 737În 1925, oraşul Galaţi a devenit prima destinaţie internă românească pentru linia aeriană, iar în 1926, numele liniei a fost schimbat în Compania Internaţională De Navigaţie Aeriană (CIDNA). În 1930 numele a fost schimbat iar în LARES (Liniile Aeriene Române Exploatate de Stat), iar în 1937, LARES a fuzionat cu principalul său adversar, SARTA (Societatea Română de Transporturi Aeriene).
După al doilea război mondial
Pe 8 august 1945, s-a înfiinţat compania aeriană TARS (Transporturile Aeriene Româno-Sovietice). Compania era în subordinea atât a guvernului român, cât şi a celui sovietic. Începând cu data de 1 februarie 1946 au fost înfiinţate zboruri interne de la aeroportul Băneasa din Bucureşti. În data de 18 septembrie 1954 compania a devenit TAROM (Transporturile Aeriene ROMâne). În decurs de 6 ani compania a reuşit să se conecteze la princiaplele capitale europene. Încă 6 ani au trebuit până la primul zbor trans-atlantic. În 1974 TAROM a început zboruri către Aeroportul Internaţional JFK din New York şi spre Australia, zburând la Sydney, via Calcutta.
TAROM Boeing 737Dacă în anii 1950 şi 1960, România fiind o ţară din blocul estic, TAROM a fost forţată să cumpere doar aeronave sovietice. După 1970, alături de JAT, a fost printre puţinele linii aeriene din blocul estic care a introdus şi avioane produse în SUA şi Europa de Vest, printre care BAC 1-11 şi Boeing 707. În anii 1980, TAROM a achiziţionat cele câteva aeronave Rombac produse sub licenţă britanică în România.
În anii '90
După căderea Uniunii Sovietice, TAROM a putut să cumpere mai multe avioane produse în occident. În 1993, TAROM efectua zboruri din România către Montreal şi Bangkok folosind aeronavele Ilyushin Il-62 şi Airbus A310. În anii '90, TAROM şi-a înlocuit flota de Boeing 707 cu trei aeronave noi, de tip (Airbus A310)
În secolul al XXI-lea
Între 2000 şi 2003, TAROM a sistat cursele spre Bangkok, Montreal, Chicago, Beijing, New York, Craiova, Tulcea, Caransebeş şi Constanţa pentru că nu erau rentabile. Anul 2004 a fost primul an care a adus profit companiei din ultimii 10 ani.

TAROM încearcă să-şi dezvolte rutele de zbor, orientându-se asupra aeroporturilor din Bucureşti (OTP), Timişoara (TSR) şi Cluj-Napoca (CLJ) (în ordinea traficului de pasageri).
