Emil Gilels (1916-1985) is soloist in this February 1959 recording, issued in 1963 on the "World's Greatest Music" label, of the Mozart Piano concerto in C major, K. 467. Rudolf Barshai conducts the Moscow Chamber Orchestra (identified merely as the "Chamber Orchestra" on the label). This recording was part of a set of 10 LPs, boxed as as "Introduction to the World's Greatest Music," serial number WGM-1. On the reverse side of the LP is a recording of the Mozart third violin concerto, with David Oistrakh soloist. Emil Grigoryevich Gilels (Ukrainian: Емі́ль Григо́рович Гі́лельс, Russian: Эми́ль Григо́рьевич Ги́лельс, Emiľ Grigoriević Gileľs; October 19, 1916 – October 14, 1985) was a Soviet pianist, widely considered one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. His last name is sometimes transliterated Hilels.

Gilels was born in Odessa, Russian Empire (now part of Ukraine) to a Jewish family with no direct musical background that nevertheless owned a piano. He began studying the piano at the age of five under Yakov Tkach, who was a student of the French pianists Raoul Pugno and Alexander Villoing Thus, through Tkach, Gilels had a pedagogical genealogy stretching back to Frédéric Chopin, via Pugno, and to Muzio Clementi, via Villoing. Tkach was a stern disciplinarian who emphasized scales and studies. Gilels later credited this strict training for establishing the foundation of his technique.

Gilels made his public debut at the age of 12 in June 1929 with a well-received program of Beethoven, Scarlatti, Chopin, and Schumann. In 1930, Gilels entered the Odessa Conservatory where he was coached by Berta Reingbald, whom Gilels credited as a formative influence. Also in Odessa Conservatory Gilels studied special harmony and polyphony with professor Mykola Vilinsky.

Rondo, Allegro Emil Gilels, Klavier Gewandhausorchester Leipzig Kurt Masur, Leitung 1983 Das 27. Klavierkonzert stellt in mancher Hinsicht das reifste Werk Mozarts dieser Gattung dar. Von der Besetzung her zählt es zu den kammermusikalisch orchestrierten Klavierkonzerten, ähnlich wie beispielsweise das 14. Konzert KV 449. Formal weist das Konzert eher auf frühe Werke vor dem 13. Klavierkonzert hin. Die Vielfalt der Themen ist eingegrenzt und der Solopart weit weniger virtuos und ausgeschmückt als in einigen zurückliegenden Werken, auch hält sich Mozart mit strukturellen Neuerungen zurück. Dennoch enthält auch dieses Werk Eigentümlichkeiten und Neuerungen, die beweisen, dass Mozart bis zum Schluss auf der Suche nach neuen Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten war. So meldet sich das Klavier unüblicherweise auch nach der Solokadenz im ersten Satz noch ausführlich zu Wort. Die Durchführung des Hauptsatzes ist von einer nie dagewesenen Dichte an Modulationen und einer geistreichen Verarbeitung des Themas gekennzeichnet. Im dritten Satz verbindet Mozart lyrische Kantabilität mit der Rondoform und sparsamen thematischen Mitteln. Auch liegt in diesem Werk eine ähnliche künstlerische Gesamtkonzeption vor wie beispielsweise im 20. Performed in Seoul Arts Center by Georgii Cherkin - piano Seoul Arts Center is the biggest concert hall in South Korea with over 2500 seats. The prelude in C sharp minor became one of Rachmaninoff's most famous compositions. In the autumn of 1898, he made a tour of Western Europe and the United States, with a program that contained the Prelude. Soon after, London publishers brought out several editions with titles such as The Burning of Moscow, The Day of Judgement, and The Moscow Waltz. America followed suit with other titles, such as The Bells of Moscow.[3] It was so popular that it was referred to as "The Prelude" and audiences would demand it as an encore at his performances, shouting "C-sharp!" The prelude in G minor is second in popularity to the famous Prelude in C-sharp Minor. It is a vigorous composition with a wide dynamic range in march style except for the beautifully romantic and lyrical center section. It has been described as a "contrast of stern reality with a central episode of haunting, nostalgic lyricism; its beauty intensified by a second voice echoing the first" (Ashkenazy). Emil Gilels played this prelude at a front in World War II, in support for the Soviet military forces fighting in the war. The narrator says (in Russian): "Gilels is playing at the front, to remind us what the war is worth fighting for: Immortal music!"

His interpretations of the central German-Austrian classics formed the core of his repertoire, in particular Beethoven, Brahms, and Schumann; but he was equally illuminative with Scarlatti and 20th-century composers such as Debussy, Rachmaninoff, and Prokofiev. His Liszt was also first-class, and his recordings of the Hungarian Rhapsody No. 9 and the Sonata in B minor have acquired classic status in some circles. Gilels premiered Prokofiev's 8th Piano Sonata, dedicated to Mira Mendelssohn, on December 30, 1944, in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. He was in the midst of completing a recording cycle of Beethoven's piano sonatas for the German record company Deutsche Grammophon when he died. His recording of the "Hammerklavier" Sonata received a Gramophone Award in 1984. Gilels recorded with his daughter Elena Gilels, including Mozart's double piano concerto with Karl Böhm and the Vienna Philharmonic and Schubert's Fantasie in F minor for piano duet. Rondo, Allegro Emil Gilels, Klavier Gewandhausorchester Leipzig Kurt Masur, Leitung 1983 Das 27. Klavierkonzert stellt in mancher Hinsicht das reifste Werk Mozarts dieser Gattung dar. Von der Besetzung her zählt es zu den kammermusikalisch orchestrierten Klavierkonzerten, ähnlich wie beispielsweise das 14. Konzert KV 449. Formal weist das Konzert eher auf frühe Werke vor dem 13. Klavierkonzert hin. Die Vielfalt der Themen ist eingegrenzt und der Solopart weit weniger virtuos und ausgeschmückt als in einigen zurückliegenden Werken, auch hält sich Mozart mit strukturellen Neuerungen zurück. Dennoch enthält auch dieses Werk Eigentümlichkeiten und Neuerungen, die beweisen, dass Mozart bis zum Schluss auf der Suche nach neuen Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten war. So meldet sich das Klavier unüblicherweise auch nach der Solokadenz im ersten Satz noch ausführlich zu Wort. Die Durchführung des Hauptsatzes ist von einer nie dagewesenen Dichte an Modulationen und einer geistreichen Verarbeitung des Themas gekennzeichnet. Im dritten Satz verbindet Mozart lyrische Kantabilität mit der Rondoform und sparsamen thematischen Mitteln. Auch liegt in diesem Werk eine ähnliche künstlerische Gesamtkonzeption vor wie beispielsweise im 20. Klavierkonzert KV 466; so enthält bereits der Kopfsatz das Material des zweiten Themas des Mittelsatzes. Dies ist ein Konzept, das in die Zukunft weist und von Beethoven weiter perfektioniert wird. Zum Kopf- und Finalsatz sind Mozarts eigene Solo-Kadenzen überliefert. Die besondere Reife und Ausnahmestellung des Werkes ist jedoch von inhaltlicher Natur. Ein schwermütiger Zug liegt über dem Werk, obwohl es meist in Dur notiert ist. Eine schwebende Metrik trägt zu diesem Eindruck bei, ebenso die vorwiegend lyrischen Themen wie das Hauptthema des ersten Satzes. Es nimmt das Finalrondo auf und ist die Melodie des wenige Tage nach dem Klavierkonzert komponierten Liedes Sehnsucht nach dem Frühling. This rare video comes from Emil Gilels' 7 January 1983 recital in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. He played this recital two days before the much better-known performance of 9 January (in the Tchaikovsky Hall) which was released on CD by Melodiya and on DVD by VAI. However this performance of 7 January is never shown. It contained the same programme of Schumann and Mendelssohn, but the first half of Brahms was either not played or, more likely, not broadcast.
