Originally released on Milestone (9067).McCoy Tyner's first major attempt at commercial success, 1976's FLY WITH THE WIND, is in a sense a follow-up to 1973's SONG OF THE NEW WORLD. On that album, although Tyner was experimenting with writing for a large group, his material was a direct outgrowth of his work with John Coltrane. Here, producer Orrin Keepnews and drum star Billy Cobham bring McCoy fully into the jazz-rock world.The orchestral backup and strings that sweeten Tyner's flights of pianistic fancy add a cinematic touch, and Hubert Laws's flute lends commercial viability as well as a textural contrast. But Tyner's playing still leaves spiritual echoes, while Cobham's excitable virtuosity makes the pianist's solos sound almost introspective by comparison. "Beyond the Sun" features a poignant and spare arrangement; after the orchestral statement, the piano enters unaccompanied, effectively imitating the orchestra. Tyner's piano sweeps evoke strings, harp, and flute. "Rolem," a rock-samba, is replete with the quick unison passages that were the rage at the time." ~ Music Outfitter

McCoy Tyner (born December 11, 1938) is a jazz pianist from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, known for his work with the John Coltrane Quartet and a long solo career.
Tyner was born Alfred McCoy Tyner in Philadelphia as the oldest of three children. He was encouraged to study piano by his mother. He began studying the piano at age 13 and within two years music had become the focal point in his life. His early influences included Bud Powell, a Philadelphia neighbor. When he was 17, he converted to Islam through the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community and changed his name to Sulieman Saud.
Tyner's first main exposure came with Benny Golson, being the first pianist in Golson's and Art Farmer's legendary Jazztet (1960). After departing the Jazztet, Tyner joined Coltrane's group in 1960 during its extended run at the Jazz Gallery replacing Steve Kuhn. (Coltrane had known Tyner for a while in Philadelphia, and featured one of the pianist's compositions, "The Believer", as early as 1958.) He appeared on the saxophonist's popular recording of "My Favorite Things" for Atlantic Records. The Coltrane Quartet, which consisted of Coltrane on tenor sax, Tyner, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums, toured almost non-stop between 1961 and 1965 and recorded a number of classic albums, including Live at the Village Vanguard, Ballads, Live at Birdland, Crescent, A Love Supreme, and The John Coltrane Quartet Plays ..., on the Impulse! label.

Keith Jarrett (born May 8, 1945, in Allentown, Pennsylvania) is an American pianist and composer who performs both jazz and classical music.
Jarrett started his career with Art Blakey, moving on to play with Charles Lloyd and Miles Davis. Since the early 1970s he has enjoyed a great deal of success in jazz, jazz fusion, and classical music; as a group leader and a solo performer. His improvisations draw not only from the traditions of jazz, but from other genres as well, especially Western classical music, gospel, blues, and ethnic folk music.
In 2003, Jarrett received the Polar Music Prize, the first (and to this day only) recipient not to share the prize with a co-recipient, and in 2004 he received the Léonie Sonning Music Prize.
In 2008, he was inducted into the Down Beat Hall of Fame in the magazine's 73rd Annual Readers' Poll.
Jarrett grew up in suburban Allentown, Pennsylvania, with significant early exposure to music. He possessed absolute pitch, and he displayed prodigious musical talents as a young child. He began piano lessons just before his third birthday, and at age five he appeared on a TV talent program hosted by the swing bandleader Paul Whiteman. The young Jarrett gave his first formal piano recital at the age of seven, playing works by composers including Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, and Saint-Saëns, and ending with two of his own compositions. Encouraged especially by his mother, Jarrett took intensive classical piano lessons with a series of teachers, including Eleanor Sokoloff of the Curtis Institute.

McCoy Tyner: Live At SFJAZZ
Few pianists have been as influential to modern jazz practice as McCoy Tyner. His harmonic and rhythmic conceptions, notably displayed as a member of John Coltrane's "classic" quartet, are instantly recognizable. And at age 74, you can still hear his driving left hand and dense chordal suggestions in fine form. For the opening of the SFJAZZ Center, Tyner called his strolling "Walk Spirit, Talk Spirit," with a multi-generational quartet. Then he played a happy blues to welcome some Bay Area jazz royalty: alto saxophonist John Handy and vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson. Originally released on Milestone (9067).McCoy Tyner's first major attempt at commercial success, 1976's FLY WITH THE WIND, is in a sense a follow-up to 1973's SONG OF THE NEW WORLD. On that album, although Tyner was experimenting with writing for a large group, his material was a direct outgrowth of his work with John Coltrane. Here, producer Orrin Keepnews and drum star Billy Cobham bring McCoy fully into the jazz-rock world.The orchestral backup and strings that sweeten Tyner's flights of pianistic fancy add a cinematic touch, and Hubert Laws's flute lends commercial viability as well as a textural contrast. But Tyner's playing still leaves spiritual echoes, while Cobham's excitable virtuosity makes the pianist's solos sound almost introspective by comparison. "Beyond the Sun" features a poignant and spare arrangement; after the orchestral statement, the piano enters unaccompanied, effectively imitating the orchestra. Tyner's piano sweeps evoke strings, harp, and flute. "Rolem," a rock-samba, is replete with the quick unison passages that were the rage at the time." ~ Music Outfitter

Few pianists have been as influential to modern jazz practice as McCoy Tyner. His harmonic and rhythmic conceptions, notably displayed as a member of John Coltrane's "classic" quartet, are instantly recognizable. And at age 74, you can still hear his driving left hand and dense chordal suggestions in fine form. For the opening of the SFJAZZ Center, Tyner called his strolling "Walk Spirit, Talk Spirit," with a multi-generational quartet. Then he played a happy blues to welcome some Bay Area jazz royalty: alto saxophonist John Handy and vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson. Hutcherson has emphysema, and requires an oxygen supply; his entire being lit up when it came time to play with the pianist he's collaborated with for nearly 50 years. -- PATRICK JARENWATTANANON

Although McCoy Tyner recorded with consistent excellence beyond his brilliant and definitive work with John Coltrane, the pianist's Milestone legacy (1972-81) cemented his individual place in the jazz pantheon. Focal Point is a 1976 Milestone date with Tyner's then working trio of Charles Fambrough on bass and Eric Gravatt on drums with the commanding reeds of Gary Bartz, Joe Ford and Ron Bridgewater and Guilherme Franco's colorful, exotic percussion. Here, Tyner explores a neat half dozen of his exceptional originals and elicits some of his most powerful, energetic personal pianism. Stand outs include "Mes Trois Fils," the very Tyneresque "Mode for Dulcimer" (with Tyner on the eponymous instrument and Franco subtly working the tabla), the Tyner-Gravatt duet of "Parody" and the Tyner-Ford-Fambrough-Gravatt-Franco "Theme For Nana." A little overdubbing occurs, but the result is still a tight, simpatico septet that understands and thrives on Tyner's unique conceptions.

On March 7th, 1963 saxophonist John Coltrane and a fledgeling vocalist named Johnny Hartman went to engineer Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey to record what would become a landmark recording on epic proportions. Both Hartman and Coltrane had a history together playing with the legendary Dizzy Gillespie during the late 1940's. Upon producer Bob Thiele's request for Coltrane to record a record of standards with the vocalist, Hartman was reluctant at first because he felt that he wasn't apt to perform with the saxophonist and felt he wasn't a jazz vocalist. After a performance with Trane at Birdland, the two, along with pianist McCoy Tyner, discussed the songs that they'd record for that session. I have placed some annotations in the video and hope that the enhanced midi keyboard view will help with deciphering the various techniques I use. As with my previous McCoy style video, here are some basics: 1. Know your pentatonic scales in all 12 keys. Practice different patterns in the right hand using these scales and try moving in and out of different keys. 2. On March 7th, 1963 saxophonist John Coltrane and a fledgeling vocalist named Johnny Hartman went to engineer Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey to record what would become a landmark recording on epic proportions. Both Hartman and Coltrane had a history together playing with the legendary Dizzy Gillespie during the late 1940's.
Upon producer Bob Thiele's request for Coltrane to record a record of standards with the vocalist, Hartman was reluctant at first because he felt that he wasn't apt to perform with the saxophonist and felt he wasn't a jazz vocalist. After a performance with Trane at Birdland, the two, along with pianist McCoy Tyner, discussed the songs that they'd record for that session. In route to the studio, Hartman heard a version of Nat "King" Cole's record "Lush Life" and wanted to record it instantly.
At 50 years old, John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman has stood the test of time. Trane's quartet featured the legendary McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. The album was recorded in one take with the exception of "You Are Too Beautiful" in which Jones dropped one of his drumsticks during the first take.
This year McCoy Tyner will release a tribute record commemorating this recording. He plans to tour with vocalist Jose James and saxophonist Eric Alexander.
These guys have revived these 6 sings in ways that stay true to the recording. McCoy as always continues to master the simplistic nature of these standards as well as make them his own just like played them 50 years ago. Vocalist Jose James adds a fresh and innovative take on these songs as well as continues to grow as musician. Both James and saxophonist Eric Alexander are the next generation and legacy of jazz music. The two have rightfully become a new voice musically and are on their way to bigger and better projects, like this tribute.

My first "McCoy Style" video was so well received I decided to make another one. I have placed some annotations in the video and hope that the enhanced midi keyboard view will help with deciphering the various techniques I use.
As with my previous McCoy style video, here are some basics:
1. Know your pentatonic scales in all 12 keys. Practice different patterns in the right hand using these scales and try moving in and out of different keys.
2. You can move in and out of different keys as long as you end up at the tonal center at key points or as I call them "landing zones". These typically will be the first beat of a 4 measure phrase.
3. 2nd inversion triads (there is a typo in the video) can be effective in the right hand when used in combination with stacked 4ths in the left.
4. Much of McCoy's improvisation is rhythm based - that's why he has dynamite drummers and very solid bass players. Vary the rhythms of both hands. Check out the section from 3:30 - 3:36 for an example of this.
5. Anticipate the upcoming chord in the LH by playing a line in the RH based on that upcoming chord in beat 3 or 4 of the preceding measure.
Production Notes:
The backing track was created partially with Band-in-a-Box with additional drums (crash cymbals) and bass added using the Roland FP-4.
The MIDI keyboard on the screen is from a program by PGMusic (makers of Band-in-a-Box) called PowerTracks Pro Audio. The notes played on the keyboard are captured using the program Camtasia and resized and placed in the proper position using the video editing program Adobe Premiere elements.

2. You can move in and out of different keys as long as you end up at the tonal center at key points or as I call them "landing zones". These typically will be the first beat of a 4 measure phrase.
3. 2nd inversion triads (there is a typo in the video) can be effective in the right hand when used in combination with stacked 4ths in the left.
4. Much of McCoy's improvisation is rhythm based - that's why he has dynamite drummers and very solid bass players. Vary the rhythms of both hands. Check out the section from 3:30 - 3:36 for an example of this.
5. Anticipate the upcoming chord in the LH by playing a line in the RH based on that upcoming chord in beat 3 or 4 of the preceding measure.

The backing track was created partially with Band-in-a-Box with additional drums (crash cymbals) and bass added using the Roland FP-4.
