I rose today in the House of Commons to speak on the importance of the Dairy Industry in Canada. _Mr. Speaker, I rise today to recognize the importance of our dairy farmers. Our 12,000 dairy farms produce wholesome affordable products and create hundreds of thousands of jobs for Canadians. One of the reasons they are successful is because of our supply management system which brings better returns to Canadian dairy farmers. Canadian dairy farmers sell almost 8 billion litres of milk annually to processors & contribute over 16 billion to our GDP. Many of my colleagues in this House know me as a vegetable farmer, but I can also milk a cow. Mr. Speaker, last summer the Cape Breton Famer's Exhibition featured the dairy industry and held a milking competition which I participated in. The MacIntyre family Farm in my riding helped me improve my milking skills. Members of this House and all Canadians should visit a dairy farm this summer and see not only how milk is produced but also the love and care that is provided to cows that produce our milk. And most importantly keep your fridge full of milk, yogurt, and cheese. And of course enjoy the best treat of the summer with real Canadian ice-cream._

The rally demonstrated the importance of keeping our rail open. Many companies with over 500 employees, generating millions into our economy depend on it and it is essential for future development of Sydney harbor. Mr. Speaker the Minister of Transport has stated in this house that her government will assist in keeping the rail open. Next month the company who currently operates the rail will give notice that it will cease operations. Time is running out. Where is this government’s promised help?” After Question Period M.P. Now today we hear the minister state that the federal government is not going to be involved in keeping the rail open. (Ottawa, ON) Member of Parliament for Sydney-Victoria, Mark Eyking continues to question the Harper government’s commitment to infrastructure spending as municipalities struggle with implementing the federal government’s wastewater regulations. “Mr. Speaker, Municipalities across this county continue to find a financial black hole where federal infrastructure funding should be. This government is all talk when it comes to infrastructure spending. In the Cape Breton Regional Municipality alone over $400 million worth of waste water system upgrades are required. Will this government finally live up to its responsibility and bring the money to the table so we can get the job done, keep our water safe and get our people back to work?” Eyking asked “What this government is doing by forcing municipalities to do work without offering adequate funding to do the job it’s unfair and unreasonable. It would certainly create further financial strain on our municipalities that would have to be passed onto the residents. (Ottawa, ON) Member of Parliament for Sydney-Victoria, Mark Eyking rose in the House of Commons today to recognize the contributions and importance of Saint Mary’s Parish. “Mr. Speaker, on Saturday November 29th fire destroyed St. Mary’s Polish Parish in Whitney Pier, a strong, proud and resilient community in my riding. St. Mary’s was the only Polish church in Atlantic Canada. It was built by the Polish immigrants who came to Sydney to work in the new steel plant. Just last year, St. Mary’s celebrated its 100th anniversary; 100 years of providing spiritual guidance and support, not only to the community of Whitney Pier but all over Cape Breton. This past summer I had the opportunity to attend a fund raiser at their community hall & I’ve seen firsthand the spirit and success of the community. Parish council president, Tom Urbaniak stated ‘There is a resilience in the spirit of the Polish Cape Bretoners, and in the spirit of the larger community. Mr. Speaker, I rise today to recognize St. Mary’s and its parishioners for their spirit and faith which is very much alive as they persevere during this very difficult time.”

“Mr. Speaker, I rise today to recognize Mr. Ronald MacDonald also known as Rannie who recently passed away on October 13th. Rannie was a World War II veteran with the West Nova Scotia infantry division. Upon his return from Europe he continued onward & volunteered in the battle of Japan. He retired with full honours and achieved the rank of Captain. He was also a Stationary Engineer and was always helping others. Rannie became a proud member of Branch 126 Legion in Westmount. He also became an active member of the Coxheath Volunteer Fire Department in 1967, dutifully contributing up until his illness in 2012. Rannie will be humbly remembered by his wife of 67 years, Norma & their remaining 7 children, along with 21 grandchildren & 7 great grandchildren. He lived a full life in Cape Breton surrounded by his loving family & friends, often regarded as a gentlemen’s gentlemen. As we approach Remembrance day Mr. MacDonald will remain close to our hearts as we commemorate all veterans, including Rannie, for their great service to our country.”

(Ottawa, ON) Member of Parliament for Sydney-Victoria Mark Eyking made a statement in the House of Commons today recognizing the passing of William “Bull” Marsh. “Mr. Speaker I rise to recognize a renowned Cape Bretoner, William “Bull” Marsh, who recently passed away over the weekend. Bull was born in New Waterford on January 21st, 1922. After serving four years in the navy during World War Two, Bull went to work in New Waterford's No. 12 Colliery, then transferred to No. 16, where he began his work with the United Mine Workers of America. In 1958 he was elected President of District 26 and held that position for 22 consecutive years. He was the longest serving president in District 26 history. In 1965 there were 6500 miners working in Cape Breton, and Bull played a major role in securing their livelihoods. He had an amazing talent as a speaker. In his leisure time, you would find him fishing, hunting or training his Labrador retrievers. Giving the miners a fair deal is what Bill stood for. His impact on the community was remarkable, and he will be fondly remembered for many years to come.” Eyking stated.
