British India from the view point of John Sergeant (BBC). A must watch documentary for all Indians
John Sergeant embarks on a unique 3,000 mile journey through the history of the greatest legacy the British left to India - its rail network. The biggest in Asia, it runs on 40,000 miles of track and reaches every corner of the subcontinent. Proposed in 1853 by Governor General Lord Dalhousie, it would become the biggest engineering project of its time and instrumental in every chapter of India's history.
Starting in Kolkata, Sergeant traverses India from east to west, travels through turbulent Bihar state, visits the Victorian railway town of Jamalpur, and discovers why the construction of the Dufferin Bridge at Varanasi resulted in Victorian technology and ingenuity clashing with ancient religion, before ending his journey at the border with Pakistan.
Even though Mahatma Gandhi denounced the railways as evil, Sergeant reveals how it became a civil engineering triumph that united the country and played a crucial role when India became independent in 1947.

His second novel, Midnight's Children (1981), won the Booker Prize in 1981. Much of his fiction is set on the Indian subcontinent. He is said to combine magical realism with historical fiction; his work is concerned with the many connections, disruptions and migrations between Eastern and Western civilizations.
His fourth novel, The Satanic Verses (1988), was the centre of a major controversy, provoking protests from Muslims in several countries. Death threats were made against him, including a fatwā issued by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the Supreme Leader of Iran, on 14 February 1989.
Rushdie was appointed Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres of France in January 1999. In June 2007, Queen Elizabeth II knighted him for his services to literature. In 2008, The Times ranked him thirteenth on its list of the fifty greatest British writers since 1945.
Rushdie's first career was as a copywriter, working for the advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather, where he came up with "irresistibubble" for Aero and "Naughty but Nice" for cream cakes, and for the agency Ayer Barker, for whom he wrote the memorable line "That'll do nicely" for American Express. It was while he was at Ogilvy that he wrote Midnight's Children, before becoming a full-time writer. John Hegarty of Bartle Bogle Hegarty has criticised Rushdie for not referring to his copywriting past frequently enough, although conceding: "He did write crap ads ... admittedly."

Jugantar Patrika (Bengali: যুগান্তর) was a Bengali revolutionary newspaper founded in 1906 in Calcutta by Barindra Kumar Ghosh, Abhinash Bhattacharya and Bhupendranath Dutt. A political weekly, it was founded in March 1906 and served as the propaganda organ for the nascent revolutionary organisation Anushilan Samiti that was taking shape in Bengal at the time. The journal derived its name Jugantar (Lit:New Era) from a political novel of the same name by renowned Bengali author Shivnath Shastri. The journal went on to lend its name to the Western Bengal wing of the Anushilan Samiti, which came to be known as the Jugantar group. The journal expounded and justified revolutionary violence against the British Raj as a political tool for independence, and denounced the right and legitimacy of the British rule in India. It was also critical of the Indian National Congress and its modeate methods which was viewed as aiding the Raj. Its target audience was the young, literate and politically motivated youth of Bengal, and was priced at one paisa. The paper rapidly acquired a broad popularity, at one time having a readership of 20,000. Bhupendranath Dutt served as the editor of the newspaper till his arrest in 1907, although it also published articles from a number of noted Bengali revolutionaries including Barindra Kumar Ghosh and Aurobindo Ghosh. It faced prosecution a number of times by the British Indian government for publishing seditious articles. Bhupendranath Dutt was arrested in 1907 for publication of articles "inciting violence against the Government of India", for which he was sentenced to a year's rigorous imprisonment. The paper was ultimately forced to shut down in 1908, amidst financial ruins following the prosecutions, and after the passage of The Newspapers (Incitement to offences) act in June 1908 which made its position vulnerable.

British woman has reportedly filed a written complaint against India hockey captain Sardar Singh, accusing him of sexual harassment.
She has accused that the veteran midfielder "mentally, physically and emotionally tortured" her.
The 21-year-old, in a startling revelation, has also claimed that Sardar, whom she met during the London Olympics in 2012 and has been engaged to him for the past four years, also forced her to abort their child in 2015.
"I met him during the London Olympics and we got to know each other better after that. We got engaged but in 2015 I got pregnant. He told me to abort the child, which I did against my wishes and without getting support from anyone," The Indian Express quoted her as saying on Wednesday.
The Ludhiana Police Commissioner P S Umranangal said that, though, a written complaint has been filed but they haven't registered an FIR.
"...complaint is being verified. The woman has alleged sexual harassment and filed a written complaint against national hockey captain Sardar Singh. The maternal family of the player lives near Bhaini Sahib and the woman has alleged that they met during visits to this religious sect guru. FIR has not been registered as investigation is going on," he said.
The woman said that Sardar ignored, abandoned her following the abortion and refused to get married to her. "He has been ignoring me and has refused to marry me after that incident. He has harassed me emotionally, physically and mentally," she said.
Sardar is currently playing for the Punjab Warriors in the ongoing Hockey India League.

History of British India Lec 02 -- Upper-division undergraduate course, comprised of 20 lectures, at UCLA in Fall 2013; lecture of 1 October 2013. Beginnings of the British presence in India; the founding of the East India Company. What made it possible for the British to hold on to India for so long a Socratic inquiry. Consideration of some reasons that permitted the British to rule India. Are there intrinsic differences between the 'East' and the 'West'? Did the Indian not have the conception of the 'foreigner'? Is Orientalism the same as 'soft power'? Solme thoughts on modern empire: US in Afghanistan, and rationales for American intervention. The idea that intervention is justified to liberate brown women from brown men; criteria used by UNDP to evaluate civilizations. Imperialism and the notion of 'law and order'; Henry Sumner Maine's description of India as 'bereft of law'. What are the positivist and romantic sides of Orientalism? Does Orientalism have any relationship to the Orient? The politics of Orientalism; Orientalism and the question of temporality. Orientalism is not simply a set of prejudices. Roland Barthes, "Empire of Signs". What are the essences by which India is sought to be captured? "Oriental Despotism" as a trope of Orientalism. Some thoughts on caste, religious primordialism, and Orientalist discourse. Hegel's views on India, from the "Philosophy of History".

BBC PRESENTATION
The partition of India تقسیم ہند was the partition of British India on the basis of religious demographics. This led to the creation of the sovereign states of the Dominion of Pakistan (that later split into the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the People's Republic of Bangladesh) and the Union of India (later Republic of India). The Indian Independence Act 1947 had decided 15 August 1947 as the appointed date for the partition. However, Pakistan came into existence a day earlier, on 14 August.
The partition of India was set forth in the Indian Independence Act 1947 and resulted in the dissolution of the British Indian Empire and the end of the British Raj. It resulted in a struggle between the newly constituted states of India and Pakistan and displaced up to 12.5 million people with estimates of loss of life varying from several hundred thousand to a million (most estimates of the numbers of people who crossed the boundaries between India and Pakistan in 1947 range between 10 and 12 million). The violent nature of the partition created an atmosphere of mutual hostility and suspicion between India and Pakistan that plagues their relationship to this day.
The partition included the geographical division of the Bengal province into East Bengal, which became part of the Dominion of Pakistan (from 1956, East Pakistan). West Bengal became part of India, and a similar partition of the Punjab province became West Punjab (later the Pakistani Punjab and Islamabad Capital Territory) and East Punjab (later the Indian Punjab, as well as Haryana and Himachal Pradesh). The partition agreement also included the division of Indian government assets, including the Indian Civil Service, the Indian Army, the Royal Indian Navy, the Indian railways and the central treasury, and other administrative services.
The two self-governing countries of India and Pakistan legally came into existence at the stroke of midnight on 14--15 August 1947. The ceremonies for the transfer of power were held a day earlier in Karachi, at the time the capital of the new state of Pakistan, so that the last British Viceroy, Lord Mountbatten of Burma, could attend both the ceremony in Karachi and the ceremony in Delhi. Thus, Pakistan's Independence Day is celebrated on 14 August and India's on 15 August.

#1903: Marine Links MI-3 Mycroft Red Switch Hack to Serco Free Flight Boeing, Inmarsat Black Hat Trap
http://www.abeldanger.net/2014/03/1903-marine-links-mi-3-mycroft-red.html
Plum City -- (AbelDanger.net). United States Marine Field McConnell has linked his erstwhile colleagues' hack of the Red Switch Network, allegedly procured by Nicholas 'Mycroft' Soames in 1978 for the Master Innholders and the MI-3 Innholders Livery Company, to Serco director Maureen Baginski's choice of Free Flight hijack maneuvers for the MH 370 Boeing aircraft which have apparently been used in a black hat ping trap for the agents of Inmarsat operations in the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT) of Diego Garcia.
McConnell recognizes Mycroft Warrants as writs issued by a competent but blackmailed or extorted officer, usually a judge or magistrate, who permits otherwise illegal acts (spoliation of evidence; ultra vires authorisation of kidnaps; spread bet body-bag counts; bypassing autopsies to conceal murder-for-hire and placing blackmailed pedophiles in decoy triage teams) and affords the person executing the writ protection from damages if the act is performed.
MI-3 = Kristine Marcy (sister) + Norman Inkster + Interpol + Intrepid (William Stephenson)
McConnell claims Serco root companies extorted then Prince of Wales (Bullingdon alumnus, later Edward VII) to issue Mycroft warrants to a telegraph-betting center in London's Langham Hotel -- an alleged pedophile honeypot used to entrap and blackmail MI-3 Innholders' guests and now a Serco virtual war room to guide and synchronize global deployments of Zigbee kidnap and contract-hit teams. (cf. Ian Fleming's Target Force unit -- a.k.a. T-Force -- a lightly armed and highly mobile unit, tasked with capturing Nazi scientific and technical military material).
McConnell claims that after the 1979-1995 Unabomb campaign, Baginski and Soames, a former personal assistant to the late chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Mark Hatfield, hired former Serco Aerospace Operations Director, Gordon McMillan, to hack the Red Switch Network in support of the MI-3 Innholders' Free Flight hijack maneuvers of 9/11 and the Inmarsat-pinged Boeing 777-200 of MH 370 on March 8, 2014.
McConnell claims that erstwhile colleagues in the Marine Corps Intelligence Activity (MCIA) have been alerted to decades of Red Switch hacking by Baginski and Soames -- a former Defence Minister under Langham habitué John Major -- and have now structured a black hat trap for MI-3 Innholders and Inmarsat pingers to be triggered when MH 370 is produced.
McConnell invites key word Googlers to read excerpts below and ask why "The List of Sherlock Innholders -- The Wrist That Didn't Bleed" book has a new title at http://www.abeldanger.net/

Article 147. Interpretation In this Chapter and in Chapter V of Part VI references to any substantial question of law as to the interpretation of this Constitution shall be construed as including references to any substantial question of law as to the interpretation of the Government of India Act, 1935 (including any enactment amending or supplementing that Act), or of any Order in Council or order made thereunder, or of the Indian Independence Act, 1947 , or of any order made thereunder CHAPTER V COMPTROLLER AND AUDITOR
===
GENERAL OF INDIA
(The aforesaid provisions has laid downs the conditions upon the Supreme Court and High Courts not to interpret anything beyond the scope of the interpretation of the Government of India Act, 1935).
(The Government of India Act, 1935 was enacted by the British parliament, so amendment in it, obviously can be made by the British Parliament only, which means Article 147 is imposing a condition upon the Indian Judiciary to recognise any subsequent amendment, if passed by the British Parliament, thus virtually the sovereignty of Indian Judiciary with regards to interpretations are concerned, was tagged with the right of the British Parliament to amend the said Act).
(On the other hand provision does not provide any provision for amendment in Indian Independence Act 1947).
(The word "Council" is denotes to British Privy Council. Otherwise what is justification in Judgments pronounced by the Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court based on references from the Judgments of the British Privy Council)?

Indian Independence Act 1947
The Indian Independence Act 1947 (10 & 11 Geo 6 c. 30) was as an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that partitioned British India into the two new independent dominions of India and Pakistan. The Act received the royal assent on 18 July 1947, and Pakistan came into being on August 14, and India on August 15, as two new countries.[1]
The legislation was formulated by the government of Prime Minister Clement Attlee, after representatives of the Indian National Congress,[2] the Muslim League,[3] and the Sikh community[4] came to an agreement with the Viceroy of India, Lord Mountbatten of Burma, on what has come to be known as the 3 June Plan or Mountbatten Plan.

Government of India Act 1935
The Government of India Act 1935 was originally passed in August 1935 (25 & 26 Geo. 5 c. 42), and is said to have been the longest (British) Act of Parliament ever enacted by that time. Because of its length[citation needed], the Act was retroactively split by the Government of India (Reprinting) Act 1935 (26 Geo. 5 & 1 Edw. 8 c. 1) into two separate Acts:

The Indian Workers Association (Great Britain), has played a significant role in the British working class movement over the last 60 years. The Grenwich & Bexley Heath branch of the Indian Workers Association (Great Britain) held this meeting to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of their branch. (1:34)
Harpal Brar, National organiser of the IWA (GB), and chairman of the CPGB-ML gives a landmark speech reflecting on the history of the IWA (GB). The organisation was able, in its time, to organise demonstrations of tens and hundreds of thousands of workers, and regularly held meetings of 4-5,00 members and supporters, throughout the country.
The IWA was a vibrant organisation because its program was correct, says Harpal. (01:45)
Indian workers, like other immigrant populations, were driven from their homes by the economic poverty (and in many cases the political chaos and violence - as with Syria, Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan), created by the stranglehold of monopoly capitalist domination of their economic and political life at home. (2:42)
The IWA (GB), therefore was from its inception an anti-imperialist organisation, giving solidarity and support to all other anti-imperialist movements, including the Irish Republican movement, the South African and Zimbabwean Anti-Apartheid struggles, the struggle of the Korean and Vietnamese against US and UN imperialism, the Palestinian and Arab peoples against zionism and colonialism, as well as the wider the anti-war movement and the struggle against occupation of the people of Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya and the Ukraine. (3:14)
On arrival in Britain, Indian workers faced racism in the street, in employment, in institutions and in the state. The IWA mobilised not only Indians and the black community, but also wider sections of the white British working class in the fight against racism. This was its great strength. (4:07)
Guided by the IWA, the indian community took a stand against black separatism, emphasising communality of interests of the working class. (4:30) We mobilised to prevent the National Front from holding an 'Election Rally' in Southall in 1979, where the police defended the racists, beat hundreds of demonstrators, and murdered Blair Peach. (5:14) In 1993, the IWA chaired an anti-racist march of 100,000 in Welling, to oppose the presence of the BNP Bookshop that was a central organising point for racist gangs and murders in the area - including those of Rohit Duggal and Stephen Lawrence. (5:37)
Last, the IWA (GB) recognised that Indians in Britain were first and foremost workers, and played their part in the general trades union struggles, and for the rights of workers, with such honourable examples as the Grunwick strikers, the Timex strikers and the Hillingdon Hospital workers. (9:10)
During the great miners strike of 1984-5 it we mobilised support, money, clothes and toys for the striking miners. (10:46) The IWA held meetings at which miners leaders spoke up and down the country, fed visiting detachments of miners and marched with them on demonstrations. This real demonstration of class solidarity and support did more to educate the working class of both communities than 1000 lectures on the importance of anti-racism. (11:24)
We live in Britain and must play our role in the British working class struggle and political movement. (12:56). British capitalism in crisis is again stoking the fires of racism and anti-immigrant sentiment, in order to distract workers from the anti-capitalist struggle. (16:18)
It is not enough to hope that the election of a left leader - Jeremy Corbyn - will transform the Labour party and solve all our problems for us. (20:34) The labour party cannot change its nature as a party of imperialism, and workers will have to learn this lesson. (21:00) We must build a truly revolutionary alternative, and the CPGB-ML with your support can become such an organisation. (22:02)

Two rebellious British teenagers experience strict parenting on the other side of the world, as angry 16-year-old Aron Shave and spoilt 17-year-old Nadia Traboulsi get new parents in India. For a week they must live with the Nanjundayyas in Bangalore, India's Silicon Valley. They are a highly disciplined family who believe in education and ambition.
Mum is a businesswoman and dedicated charity worker who, since her husband passed away 15 years ago, has raised her children with the help of her proud extended family - uncle Pradeep and uncle Mukesh - but has never taken her eye off the parenting ball.
Despite adapting their traditional family values to a modern society, the Nanjundayyas have a zero tolerance attitude towards bad language and public disorder. So when Nadia and Aron have a huge argument in the school playground, the family are humiliated.
Can the Nanjundayyas encourage Aron to control his anger and move on from a death in the family?
And will Nadia become less selfish and focus on her education and find her ambition?
