Norman Joel Greenbaum (born November 20, 1942) is an American singer-songwriter. He is best known for writing and performing the song "Spirit in the Sky."
Greenbaum was born in Malden, Massachusetts. He was raised in an Orthodox Jewish household and attended Hebrew school at Congregation Beth Israel. His initial interest in music was sparked by southern blues music and the folk music that was popular in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He performed with various bands in high school and studied music at Boston University for two years. In college he performed at local coffeehouses but eventually dropped out and moved to Los Angeles in 1965.
Greenbaum is best known for his song "Spirit in the Sky". The song, with its combination of 'heavy' guitar, hand-clapping, and spiritual lyrics, was released by Warner Bros. Records in 1969. It sold two million copies in 1969 and 1970, and received a gold disc from the R.I.A.A. It has subsequently been used in many films, advertisements, and television shows.

Never been released on CD to my knowledge. Features Russell DaShiell who played on Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky" (the lead guitar part) and Harvey Mandel's "Games Guitars Play" (also features a Crowfoot song "Dry Your Eyes") which I have a track or two from on my channel. I forgot also to mention: Don Francisco was in Highway Robbery (that killer heavy album you know and love, yes) Not sure where he is, Don if you're out there, we love you! I have told Russell how much I love this album, he said he has no clue where the masters are, so really no chances of a re release.. THE Singer began the song quite subtlety... For thirty minutes or so the excitement in the room had been escalating... "Norman's coming on soon... We're gonna' hear Spirit in the Sky!"... It's the kind of song that switches your track; causes you to want to listen closely... Like you've heard it a hundred times... And each of those times the anticipation of the guitar licks cause ecstasy... It's a song that wields the human soul with a sense of dignity... brings everybody together... and it has done that for millions of people over the past 50 years... So here we are... "The Kids are Alright!" standing all together... Looking at the lovely Bonita and her flame Norman Greenbaum... with John Andersen playing one guitar... Darren Fravel on the other guitar...
