The Ku Klux Klan is the oldest terrorist organization in the United States. In response to the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, the Ku Klux Klan also experiences a new upswing - primarily in the southern states.
In many places, the authorities are involved in the Klan‘s racially motivated terror, whose goal is to maintain white supremacy in the U.S.
In 1963, the Klan commits a horrific bombing of a church in Birmingham, Alabama, and several deadly assassinations of civil rights activists. The crimes shock the public. Under political pressure, the FBI finally goes on the offensive. By the 1970s, the Klan has only a few thousand followers.
Under a new leader, David Duke, the organization remains true to its tyrannical, terrorist origins. Many Klansmen take new symbols as their own, exchanging hoods for masks and swastika tattoos. Today, membership in the Klan and other racist groups in the U.S. is on the rise again.

El Ku Klux Klan es la organización terrorista más antigua de Estados Unidos. Desde hace más de 150 años, el KKK ha sido noticia por su programa de odio, racismo, exclusión y violencia. Ahora vuelve a ganar popularidad en Estados Unidos.
En 1865, un pequeño grupo de veteranos de la guerra de Secesión de los estados sureños fundó una sociedad secreta: el Ku Klux Klan. Pronto el KKK empieza a propagar el miedo y el terror entre la población negra, recién liberada de la esclavitud. Aumentan los asesinatos y los linchamientos. En Washington, el Congreso toma medidas contra el enemigo invisible, lo que lleva a la disolución oficial del grupo en 1871. Sin embargo, en 1915 resurge tras el estreno de la película de David W. Griffith "El nacimiento de una nación."
Con nuevos líderes, el Klan se adapta a los cambios sociales en Estados Unidos y radicaliza su programa. El KKK se opone radicalmente a la inmigración y la urbanización, y se vuelve anticomunista, antisemita y anticatólico. Casi cuatro millones de estadounidenses se unen a la organización, que se ha convertido en un enorme e influyente grupo de presión. Ku Klux Klan
The Ku Klux Klan (KKK), or simply "the Klan", is the name of three distinct past and present movements in the United States that have advocated extremist reactionary currents such as white supremacy, white nationalism, and anti-immigration, historically expressed through terrorism aimed at groups or individuals whom they opposed. All three movements have called for the "purification" of American society, and all are considered right wing extremist organizations.
The first Ku Klux Klan flourished in the Southern United States in the late 1860s, then died out by the early 1870s. It sought to overthrow the Republican state governments in the South during the Reconstruction Era, especially by using violence against African American leaders. With numerous chapters across the South, it was suppressed around 1871, through federal enforcement. Members made their own, often colorful, costumes: robes, masks, and conical hats, designed to be terrifying, and to hide their identities.

The Ku Klux Klan is the oldest terrorist organization in the United States. In response to the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, the Ku Klux Klan also experiences a new upswing - primarily in the southern states.
In many places, the authorities are involved in the Klan‘s racially motivated terror, whose goal is to maintain white supremacy in the U.S.
In 1963, the Klan commits a horrific bombing of a church in Birmingham, Alabama, and several deadly assassinations of civil rights activists. The crimes shock the public. Under political pressure, the FBI finally goes on the offensive. By the 1970s, the Klan has only a few thousand followers.
Under a new leader, David Duke, the organization remains true to its tyrannical, terrorist origins. Many Klansmen take new symbols as their own, exchanging hoods for masks and swastika tattoos. Today, membership in the Klan and other racist groups in the U.S. is on the rise again.

En 1865, un pequeño grupo de veteranos de la guerra de Secesión de los estados sureños fundó una sociedad secreta: el Ku Klux Klan. Pronto el KKK empieza a propagar el miedo y el terror entre la población negra, recién liberada de la esclavitud. Aumentan los asesinatos y los linchamientos. En Washington, el Congreso toma medidas contra el enemigo invisible, lo que lleva a la disolución oficial del grupo en 1871. Sin embargo, en 1915 resurge tras el estreno de la película de David W. Griffith "El nacimiento de una nación."
Con nuevos líderes, el Klan se adapta a los cambios sociales en Estados Unidos y radicaliza su programa. El KKK se opone radicalmente a la inmigración y la urbanización, y se vuelve anticomunista, antisemita y anticatólico. Casi cuatro millones de estadounidenses se unen a la organización, que se ha convertido en un enorme e influyente grupo de presión. A finales de la década de 1920, el movimiento se debilita a causa de los escándalos y la Gran Depresión. Tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial se disuelve una vez más. Pero ese no es su final....

En montrant ainsi combien le mouvement et ses crimes incarnent une histoire et des valeurs collectives, il jette une lumière crue sur cette part d’ombre que l’Amérique blanche peine encore à reconnaître.

From the abolition of slavery in the 19th century to the populism of the inter-war period, the civil rights struggle of the 1950s and 1960s, and the recent riots in Charlottesville, the history of the Ku Klux Klan is inseparable from that of the United States. But what do we really know about this secret society? How has it managed to perpetuate itself up to the present day? What hatreds and fears has the Klan fed on, and fueled? What kinds of resistance have civil society and democratic institutions offered? And what does its story tell us about America's relationship to its minorities?
Through the secret history of the Ku Klux Klan, from its creation to the present day, this film will explore more than a century of racial segregation and racism, bringing together numerous archive images as well as interviews with historians and witnesses who have faced the violence of the Klan.

The Ku Klux Klan is the oldest terrorist organization in the United States. In response to the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, the Ku Klux Klan also experiences a new upswing - primarily in the southern states.
In many places, the authorities are involved in the Klan‘s racially motivated terror, whose goal is to maintain white supremacy in the U.S.
In 1963, the Klan commits a horrific bombing of a church in Birmingham, Alabama, and several deadly assassinations of civil rights activists. The crimes shock the public. Under political pressure, the FBI finally goes on the offensive. By the 1970s, the Klan has only a few thousand followers.
Under a new leader, David Duke, the organization remains true to its tyrannical, terrorist origins. Many Klansmen take new symbols as their own, exchanging hoods for masks and swastika tattoos. Today, membership in the Klan and other racist groups in the U.S. is on the rise again.

El Ku Klux Klan es la organización terrorista más antigua de Estados Unidos. Desde hace más de 150 años, el KKK ha sido noticia por su programa de odio, racismo, exclusión y violencia. Ahora vuelve a ganar popularidad en Estados Unidos.
En 1865, un pequeño grupo de veteranos de la guerra de Secesión de los estados sureños fundó una sociedad secreta: el Ku Klux Klan. Pronto el KKK empieza a propagar el miedo y el terror entre la población negra, recién liberada de la esclavitud. Aumentan los asesinatos y los linchamientos. En Washington, el Congreso toma medidas contra el enemigo invisible, lo que lleva a la disolución oficial del grupo en 1871. Sin embargo, en 1915 resurge tras el estreno de la película de David W. Griffith "El nacimiento de una nación."
Con nuevos líderes, el Klan se adapta a los cambios sociales en Estados Unidos y radicaliza su programa. El KKK se opone radicalmente a la inmigración y la urbanización, y se vuelve anticomunista, antisemita y anticatólico. Casi cuatro millones de estadounidenses se unen a la organización, que se ha convertido en un enorme e influyente grupo de presión. A finales de la década de 1920, el movimiento se debilita a causa de los escándalos y la Gran Depresión. Tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial se disuelve una vez más. Pero ese no es su final....

El Ku Klux Klan es la organización terrorista más antigua de Estados Unidos. Como reacción al movimiento por los derechos civiles de la década de 1960, experimentó un resurgimiento, principalmente en los estados del Sur.
En muchos lugares, incluso las autoridades están implicadas en el terrorismo racista que persigue mantener la supremacía blanca en la sociedad estadounidense. En 1963, el KKK comete un horrible atentado contra una iglesia en Birmingham, Alabama, y asesina a varios activistas de los derechos civiles.
Los crímenes conmocionan a la opinión pública. Bajo presión política, el FBI finalmente pasa a la ofensiva. En los años setenta, el Klan sólo tiene unos pocos miles de seguidores.
Aunque su líder en los años setenta, David Duke, intenta dar a la organización cierta seriedad, el KKK sigue siendo fiel a su reputación tiránica. Muchos de sus miembros cambian las tradicionales capuchas por máscaras y tatuajes de esvásticas.
Hoy, el número de miembros del Ku Klux Klan y de otros grupos racistas en Estados Unidos está aumentando de nuevo.

Ku Klux Klan
The Ku Klux Klan (KKK), or simply "the Klan", is the name of three distinct past and present movements in the United States that have advocated extremist reactionary currents such as white supremacy, white nationalism, and anti-immigration, historically expressed through terrorism aimed at groups or individuals whom they opposed. All three movements have called for the "purification" of American society, and all are considered right wing extremist organizations.
The first Ku Klux Klan flourished in the Southern United States in the late 1860s, then died out by the early 1870s. It sought to overthrow the Republican state governments in the South during the Reconstruction Era, especially by using violence against African American leaders. With numerous chapters across the South, it was suppressed around 1871, through federal enforcement. Members made their own, often colorful, costumes: robes, masks, and conical hats, designed to be terrifying, and to hide their identities.
