I’ve been a huge Peranakan food fan from when I had my first meal years ago. In Singapore I went to Daisy’s Dream Kitchen, an amazing Peranakan restaurant. The restaurant not only serves amazing food, but it also has a unique story. Daisy, who is the principle cook and owner, loved to cook for her family and friends. Her family loved her cooking and it was her dream to eventually open a restaurant. But she started off at a food court, and sold just a few minimum Peranakan dishes. Eventually they opened a full restaurant called Daisy’s Dream Kitchen. The passion of service and hospitality, paired with delicious food, is what made it such a good experiences to eat there. Let’s just quickly talk about Peranakan food. Peranakans are Straits born Chinese - so Chinese descendants born someone along the straits of Malacca in Malaysia, Singapore, and a few in southern Thailand. They are known for adapting and sometimes intermarrying with the local Malay population, and so the food reflects a unique blend of both Chinese and Malay, and it’s an amazing combination. When Ying and I ate at Daisy’s Dream Kitchen, they brought us out a selection of some of their most popular signature dishes, and we had an absolute feast of a meal including stink beans with anchovies, a fried fish with sambal, ngo hiang, a meatball soup, and the dish that I had for the very first time, buah keluak - and one of the restaurant specialities. The nut that’s the main part of this dish, is buried for about 11 days, they cooked, and then prepared. I think the nut was emptied out and mixed with some minced meat, and then cooked in a curry. It was so unique and so delicious - it kind of tasted like chocolate cake and rye bread within a curry. Daisy’s Dream Kitchen is a great place to eat Peranakan food in Singapore. I had met Ray, the son of Daisy while I was in Bangkok, and they invited me to eat at their family restaurant. I didn’t pay for our food, as the family was very kind, but this is not a sponsored video. But then again, there is nothing more unsettling than finding out that there is something that cannot be explained by scientists, leaving everyone to scratch their heads. The idea of something being unexplainable is rather terrifying, as it leads to ambiguity and mystery that leaves us vulnerable. For example, the Our Lady of Akita was documented crying human tears in over 101 occurrences over a span of 6 years in Japan. Scientists tested the tears and discovered that they were human. So what does this mean? Does it mean that it’s the end of the world? Could it mean there’s another type of human hybrid in existence? But that’s not the first time a female religious figure terrified and intrigued us. In 1996, the Virgin Mary was seen in the window of an office building in Clearwater, Florida as a silhouette. Call it chance, the angle of the sun, but it is truly remarkable that such an image should appear. Then, we have the Shroud of Turin that was believed to have been used for Jesus’ body after he died. The marks and wounds on the shroud are consistent with a crucifixion. Scientists were able to make a 3D model of the face and body from the shroud, giving the world possibly the most accurate depiction of Jesus Christ. Then we have the miraculous story of a young boy temporarily coming back to life after dying of pneumonia and asking for a glass of water. But this miracle didn’t last long as the boy once again passed out and died. But it gives hope that it is possible, with enough passion and prayer, to ask for one more chance at life. Also, we discover in this video a yogi who has lived for seventy years without food or water thanks to the aid of a goddess that he worships. Is this proof that there is such a thing as divine intervention? It is also true that there is such a thing as surviving as a fall that should have killed a person almost instantly, but thanks to a miracle, a 37-year old man by the name of Alcides was able to survive a fall of 47 stories after surgery and a 3 week coma. And finally, a flight attendant survived a 2600 foot fall from an airplane after it was shot down. How did she survive? Only a higher power knows. Overall, these miracles should not have happened, but they did. Is this proof that there is a god? Is this proof that perhaps science isn’t the only answer to our existence, and perhaps, instead, we should just sit back and accept the fact that perhaps we will never have all the answers? Maybe. There are so many things in this world that scientists are still trying to work through, and maybe there will be answers in the next few decades. Here are 10 of the more incredible moments the recording devices have captured. Number 10. Man walking around with a golf club. The Seattle officer on the scene said that the 69-year-old wielded the sporting equipment in a threatening manner, so she arrested him. Video evidence taken by the patrol car’s dashcam shows he was, as he said, just using it as a cane. An apology was issued. Number 9. Officer saves choking motorist. While on traffic patrol in the Bronx, a member of the NYPD noticed a car that had slowed down in the right lane. After pulling the vehicle over, he approached the driver and discovered she was having difficulty breathing. He performed the Heimlich maneuver, dislodged a cough drop, and called for medical assistance. Number 8. Tossing a ball around with a lonely kid. Sergeant Ariel Soltura was traveling through a Rosenberg, Texas neighborhood when he saw a kid with a football, but no friends to enjoy it with. He took a moment to get out of the car and play some catch with the youth, no doubt making the 10-year-old’s day. Number 7. Delaware officer shakes it off. Sometimes when a Taylor Swift song plays a person just needs to get down and sing along. That’s exactly what Master Corporal Jeff Davis did, only his performance was caught on camera and shared with the world via Facebook and YouTube. Number 6. Falling tree. It started out as a regular traffic stop, but certainly didn’t end that way. In the midst of talking to the driver about why their lights weren’t on, the Centerville, Iowa officer was struck by a falling tree. He survived, but whether the incident makes him lucky or unlucky remains a hotly debated topic. Number 5. Long, complicated horse chase. A horse carriage driver in Poland only left his coach for a moment to run into a store. While he was away, an engine backfired and the frightened animals took off. Efforts to corral them included a car chase, roadblocks, and finally just pursing the pair on foot and grabbing the reins when the horses were distracted. Number 4. Officers fighting. Upon being pulled over by a uniformed member of the Miami Police Department, the lieutenant who was stopped for speeding reportedly stated his title and forced his car door open into the officer. The two struggled and ended up on the ground. Several other units showed up and an investigation followed. Number 3. Batman gets stopped. It seems that even Batmobiles must be sporting state-issued tags. During a traffic stop related to the lack of them, police learned that this particular bat-inspired crusader’s name is really Lenny, but that he truly was in the midst of performing an act of heroism. He was on his way to a hospital to spread some cheer among sick children. Number 2. Officer breaks down. Believing that a man he’d stopped was going to pull a weapon on him, a policeman in Billings, Montana drew his own firearm and fatally wounded the individual. Upon realizing the victim wasn’t even armed, the officer collapsed next to a squad car and was inconsolable over what he’d just done. Number 1. A sing-along with Katy Perry. Luckily dashcams don’t always record what’s going on in front of police cars, because sometimes the good stuff is going on inside of them.
