Interval Notation
This algebra video tutorial provides a basic introduction into interval notation. It explains how to express the solution of an inequality using a number line and interval notation. Examples include compound inequalities. You should use the parentheses symbol next to an infinity symbol or for open circles on the number line. You should use brackets whenever you can encounter a closed circle on a number. This video contains plenty of examples and practice problems on interval notation.

Interval Notation Explained - The Basics You NEED to Know!
Today, we're covering how to express a solution in interval notation, which is common when solving an inequality.
The interval notation has a few components - parenthesis, brackets, and the number (or infinity), separated by a comma. Parenthesis are used when the inequality symbol has either a "less than" or "greater than" sign, which is represented with an open circle on a number line, indicating that the number itself is not included. A bracket is used when the symbol is "greater than or equal to," or "less than or equal to." Infinity will always have a parenthesis, since we cannot include it - it is a concept, not an actual number.
We'll review several examples you need to know, including the union of two sets, represented by a "U," which joins two sets together, as well as the inters...

Algebra I on Khan Academy: Algebra is the language through which we describe patterns. Think of it as a shorthand, of sorts. As opposed to having to do something over and over again, algebra gives you a simple way to express that repetitive process. It's also seen as a "gatekeeper" subject. Once you achieve an understanding of algebra, the higher-level math subjects become accessible to you. Without it, it's impossible to move forward. It's used by people with lots of different jobs, like carpentry, engineering, and fashion design. In these tutorials, we'll cover a lot of ground. Some of the topics include linear equations, linear inequalities, linear functions, systems of equations, factoring expressions, quadratic expressions, exponents, functions, and ratios.
About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.

We'll review several examples you need to know, including the union of two sets, represented by a "U," which joins two sets together, as well as the intersection, represented by an upside down "U," which only looks for the overlap between sets.
