Your input is requested for an upcoming film on the
Secrets of
Stealth Camping, to be released
March 2014. What topics do you want to see included?
Stealth camping is the act of secretly camping in a public or private area and then leaving without being detected. Although it is used mostly by commandos on secret missions, stealth camping has become popular with civilians who dare try it. Creating a private campground of your own, located in a highly inconspicuous place, remaining hidden at all times and leaving no trace that you were ever there takes enormous skill and training.
While stealth camping is not for everyone, those who dare to try it will find it both challenging and extremely rewarding. While this type of camping will surely take some getting used to, I personally can not think of a more challenging experience. Stealth camping has less environmental impact than campground camping. It allows you to be up-close and personal with nature. Stealth camping is safe because strangers don't know you are there. However, for extra safety, you should tell someone you trust where you plan to camp.
Stealth camping does not necessarily mean illegal camping. It is legal some places and illegal other places. Obtain permission from the local land owner / manager before you camp. Stealth / dispersed camping is legal in most US
National Forests and
BLM Land. Many private land owners will allow people to use their property, if you ask permission.
The film will show how to:
- Obtain permission from the land owner / manager
-
Select a camp site -- using shadows to your advantage
- Select alternative shelters -- using vegetation, tents, hammocks, military poncho hoochs, etc.
-
Escape detection when arriving and departing the site
-
Minimize light, sound, fire and food odors
- How to
Leave No Trace, packing out what you pack in
-
Call for help if you get in trouble
- Have fun
