Margaret Florence Herrick (September 27, 1902 – June 21, 1976), also known professionally as Margaret Gledhill, was the librarian and executive director of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences library, the Margaret Herrick Library, which in 1971 was named the Margaret Herrick Library in her honor.
She was born Margaret Buck in Spokane, Washington, to Nathan K. Buck, an attorney, and Adda M. Buck (née Morie).
In 1929, Herrick graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in library science.
In 1929, Herrick became head librarian at the Yakima Public LIbrary in Yakima, Washington. She moved to Hollywood, California, with her husband and became the Academy's first librarian. She served in that capacity until 1943, during the war, when she became the interim executive director of the Academy, replacing her husband. In 1946, she was offered the Executive Director position permanently and held that position until her retirement in January 1971.

This recently unearthed newsreel footage was shot in the Philippines during a 1966 global outreach tour that spanned 11 countries. The tour was in part a response to international interest in the Academy’s Foreign Language Film Award, which had been a competitive category for 10 years at the time of her visit. In the newsreel, Herrick arrives at a cocktail party held in her honor by Filipino filmmaker Luis Nepomuceno and his wife in late August 1966. At the party, she meets Filipino film industry professionals and reporters, feasts on the local cuisine, and watches a performance of traditional Fili...

A proud and patriotic tour through the Library’s reading rooms, book stacks, card catalogs and auditorium, the Academy Award-winning short documentary “Library of Congress” (1945), preserved by the Academy Film Archive, highlights the federal institution’s global and local impact. The journey of books from Washington D.C. to rural America bookends the film, reinforcing its theme of the Library as an ambassador of knowledge and free speech. The film emphasizes the diversity of the Library’s impressive collections, from American history collections that range from founding documents to Native American and immigrant histories, to the Oriental Division (now the Asian Reading Room), and the Library’s efforts to bring reading to non-sighted patrons with books in Braille and “talking books” on re...
