JCCC Midwest Litter Fest And Pick Up America (Advocacy Journalism)
Sustainability Requires
Direct Action!
PERSPECTIVES: To bring awareness of roadside litter,
Johnson County Community College (
JCCC) joined "
Pick Up America" and
Kansas City area volunteers during the
September 24,
2011 Midwest Litter Fest. The groups picked up trash and recyclables along a 45-mile stretch of roadway from
Roeland Park to
Lawrence, Kansas.
Lily Berman, Pick Up America's
Director of
Community Outreach, stated, "Picking up trash is not the easiest task.
It's something that's really physically strenuous; it's really emotionally challenging to see our country completely covered in plastic."
"Three Pick Up Artists" represented
Team JCCC:
Kris Mo, Bea Sanders, and Jay Antle. They traveled on foot from the front of the college entrance, west along the north side of
College Blvd. towards Renner Blvd., collecting trash and recyclables along the team's
2.2 mile-long designated litter pick up route.
The entire event collected approx. 450lbs of trash and recyclables with the college team collecting two bags of trash and one bag of recyclables.
ADVOCACY JOURNALISM:
Inspired by the trio's direct sustainability actions, on
October 30, 2011 I retraced one mile of Team JCCC's path, picking up additional trash and recyclables: Three volunteers and a photographer can make a
difference!
