Decorah Municipal Airport

Decorah Municipal Airport (IATA: DEH, ICAO: KDEH, FAA LID: DEH) is a city-owned public-use airport located two nautical miles (3.7 km) southeast of the central business district of Decorah, in Winneshiek County, Iowa, United States.

Facilities and aircraft

Decorah Municipal Airport covers an area of 154 acres (62 ha) at an elevation of 1,158 feet (353 m) above mean sea level. It has one runway designated 11/29 with a concrete surface measuring 4,001 by 75 feet (1,220 x 23 m).

For the 12-month period ending July 19, 2007, the airport had 9,100 general aviation aircraft operations, an average of 24 per day. At that time, there were 25 aircraft based at this airport: 96% single-engine and 4% ultralight.

Book of Nahum

The Book of Nahum is the seventh book of the 12 minor prophets of the Hebrew Bible. It is attributed to the prophet Nahum, and was probably written in Jerusalem in the 7th century BC.

Background

According to some, Nahum prophesied in the beginning of the reign of Ahaz (740s BC). Others, however, think that his prophecies are to be referred to the latter half of the reign of Hezekiah (8th century BC). The book would then have been written in Jerusalem, where he witnessed the invasion of Sennacherib and the destruction of his host (2 Kings 19:35).

The scholarly consensus is that the "book of vision" was written at the time of the fall of Nineveh at the hands of the Medes and Babylonians (612 BC). This theory is demonstrated by the fact that the oracles must be dated after the Assyrian destruction of Thebes, Egypt in 663 BC as this event is mentioned in Nahum 3:8.

Author

Little is known about Nahum’s personal history. His name means "comforter," and he was from the town of Alqosh, (Nahum 1:1) which scholars have attempted to identify with several cities, including the modern `Alqush of Assyria and Capharnaum of northern Galilee. He was a very nationalistic Hebrew, and lived amongst the Elkoshites in peace. His writings were likely written in about 615 BC, before the downfall of Assyria.

Twitch (device)

A twitch is a device that is used to restrain horses for various stressful situations, such as veterinary treatment. Although it may look and sound inhumane, a twitch calms the horse by releasing endorphins as pressure is applied on the twitch, not causing the horse any pain. It is usually made up of a stick-like handle loop of chain or rope on the end, or a metal ring with a rope loop which is wrapped around the upper lip of the horse and tightened. Another design, sometimes called a "humane" twitch, is a plier-like clamp that squeezes the lip with motion akin to that seen in a nutcracker. The aluminium screw twitch is yet another form of twitch.

How the twitch works

The upper lip of the horse is grasped and the loop of chain or rope is placed around it, then the handle of the twitch is twisted until the loop is firmly around the lip. A wooden handled twitch has the disadvantage that it requires a handler and the handle may injure the horse handler if the horse throws its head. Other twitches may be attached to the halter or headcollar. An emergency twitch can be improvised by placing a loop of leather or heavy cord around the nose and tightening it by twisting a stick around and around until it is tightened sufficiently.
