Covering an eventful period in Herbert Hoover's career -- more specifically, his life as a political pugilist from 1933 to 1955 -- The Crusade Years is a previously unknown memoir that Hoover composed and revised during the 1940s and 1950s -- and then, surprisingly, set aside. While going through some old kinescopes, I came upon this clip of former President Herbert Hoover giving a speech on the opening day of the Republican National Convention held at the International Ampitheater in Chicago, IL.
This was the year that Richard Nixon and Henry Cabot Lodge were nominated to run against John Kennedy & Lyndon Johnson. (As you know, Nixon lost but later won along with VP Spiro Agnew.)
Anyway, here is a clip of 85 year old Hoover's speech to the convention on July 25, 1960.

A new history of the Great Depression is emerging. One that acknowledges the role that government played in causing and prolonging it, and the constructive role that free enterprise could have played, if it were given the chance. In this video, UCLA economist Lee Ohanian explains how Herbert Hoover, widely misunderstood as a champion of the free market, actually turned what should have just been a recession into a depression due to his mistrust of the market.

A parallel volume to Hoover's Freedom Betrayed, this work recounts Hoover's family life after March 4, 1933, his myriad philanthropic interests, and his unrelenting "crusade against collectivism" in American life. Aside from its often feisty account of Hoover's political activities during the Roosevelt/Truman era and its window on Hoover's private life and campaigns for good causes, The Crusade Years invites readers to reflect on the factors that made possible his extraordinarily fruitful post-presidential years. As least as much as Theodore Roosevelt, he came to personify the activist ex-presidency; some historians even argue that he invented it.

The Herbert Hoover Library and Herbert Hoover National Historic Site present "Herbert Hoover: Master of Emergencies." This presentation is a part of a series called The Presidential Primary Sources Project, a collaboration between Internet2, The National Park Service, and The Presidential National Libraries.
A successful and world-renowned mining engineer, Herbert Hoover's reputation for integrity, efficiency, and problem-solving led him to a life of public service. Hoover was a leader of worldwide humanitarian organizations and he worked for three presidents before being elected president in 1928.
This presentation will demonstrate Hoover's effectiveness as a leader throughout the course of his life leading up to the election of 1928. His strong leadership qualities, which earned him the nickname "the master of emergencies," made him "the most popular man in the world," and secured the presidency in 1928 by the largest landslide in presidential election history.
This program will use illustrative primary sources including photographs, correspondence, documents, and historic structures.

Remembering Herbert Hoover and the Commission for Relief in Belgium
Why has the Commission for Relief in Belgium, one of the greatest humanitarian relief operations in modern history, been almost completely forgotten?
The operation started in Belgium in 1914 and relied on the heroic determination and managerial genius of Herbert Hoover. With his Belgian partner Emile Francqui, it is estimated that Hoover and the Commission for Relief in Belgium (CRB) saved from starvation over 10 million people in Belgium and northern France by collecting more than $200 million and distributing more than three million tons of food and clothing.
To honor Hoover and the CRB, the U.S. Embassy in Brussels organized an exhibit and a series of lectures on the work of Hoover and his Belgian partners during and after WWI.
This video, produced by the Office of Public Diplomacy at the U.S. Embassy in 2007, highlights the exhibit and the seminars. It also features interviews with Herbert Hoover III, former Secretary of State George Schultz, former U.S. Ambassador to Belgium Tom C. Korologos and many other Belgian and American historians and dignitaries.

REPORT: TECHNICAL EVALUATION OF HERBERT HOOVER DIKE LAKE OKEECHOBEE, FLORIDA - April 27, 2006 http://groups.google.com/group/e-everglades/web/hhd-technical-evaluation-rpt-4-2006 (82 pages)
Corps keeping the lid on dike data - Palm Beach Post, August 27, 2006
(Excerpt) "Ninety-nine percent of understanding Herbert Hoover Dike is understanding its past performance and its geology," said Vick, a Colorado engineer who co-wrote a recent report labeling the dike a "grave and imminent danger" to human life. "People need to know what risks they're exposed to." Vick said he never saw the leak database during his months of examining corps documents for the South Florida Water Management District.
South Florida Dike Poses "Grave Danger," Engineers Say - National Geographic News, August 15, 2006 http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2006/08/060815-florida-dike.html (Excerpt) Vick, an author of the report, said there was "very clear evidence that there was a bureaucratic logjam here. "Things occurred very slowly up until the report," Vick said. "We're pleased to see the interest at all levels, and the response, since the report came out. We see things very positive about the acceleration from the pace that's been maintained in the past 20 years."
Dike Report Toned Down - Palm Beach Post, July 24, 2006
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_8163/is_20060724/ai_n51928978/
(Excerpts) An early draft of the document called the leak-prone dike around Lake Okeechobee a "clear and present danger" - echoing a phrase the U.S. Supreme Court has used to describe perils facing the nation during wartime. The final version released May 2 changed that to "grave and imminent danger." Similarly, the state's consultants originally warned in their April 14 draft that a dike failure would cause "a disaster of catastrophic proportion played out on a regional scale." The final version settled for "a catastrophe for South Florida." The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had objected to the original wording in both passages, saying the language could cause "an extremely high level of anxiety in a lay audience." But the corps was hardly mollified by the new phrasing, which it called "not much better." The public never saw the April 14 draft, which bore a front-page notice declaring it confidential "for security purposes." The Palm Beach Post obtained the draft and the corps' critiques through a public records request to the South Florida Water Management District, which commissioned the $300,000 dike study.
Palm Beach Post, May 21, 2006 (Excerpt) Vick said one of the report's most alarming details — the statement that the dike once was within "hours" of breaching from wave erosion — came from corps staff members during a meeting in Jacksonville. In contrast, Carpenter has said the dike never has required any "heroic" efforts by his staff to keep it from failing. Vick said nobody should take his or his colleagues' word about the dike's condition. Just read the corps' earlier documents, he said. In preparing their own report, he added, "We said to ourselves: If worse comes to worse and that dike fails, can we look ourselves in the mirror and say we did everything we could to prevent a failure?"
Palm Beach Post, May 03, 2006 (Excerpt) "I was surprised that the dike had been left in this condition for so long, with so many engineers who have said over and over again that it needed to be fixed," said one of the three experts, Colorado engineering consultant Steven Vick, who also has served on an expert panel examining federal efforts in New Orleans.

This is an edited compilation of interviews from 4 faculty members who worked at Herbert Hoover High School in Des Moines, IA during the 1980's. The interviews were filmed in the spring of 2006. The total length of interview tape was over 2hrs - but was edited down to 11+min for showing during the HHS class of '81's 25yr reunion. The faculty interviewed were: Gerald Hollingsworth (Spanish), Bob Wells (vice-principal), Don Murphy (chemistry), and Gerald Dockum (principal). Tracy (Parks) Codel and Julie (Jennings) Walter filmed and interviewed the faculty. Although Tracy & Julie are not professionals (as demonstrated by the dog walking through the video and the sun setting during interviews making lighting dark) - they made a good effort to capture fond and fun memories. A student at Central Campus helped to edit the footage in 2006. Enjoy.

Robert's bio and his Mises articles can be found here: https://mises.org/profile/robert-p-murphy
Robert hosts the popular Contra Krugman podcast with Tom Woods that debunks each of Paul Krugman of the NY Times' articles: http://contrakrugman.com/
Robert's many popular Austrian School of Economics books can be found here: http://www.amazon.com/Robert-P.-Murphy/e/B001JOYQXI/
During this 35+ minute interview, Jason starts by asking Robert about the long term consequences to the interventionist policy of the Keynesian central planners.
Robert talks about the Austrian Theory of the Business Cycle and how while the bust has been delayed, it has also been made much larger.
Jason and Robert discuss Keynesian Economics and why Keynesian Economics won't die. Robert thinks the people in power love it because it gives them the justification to do what they already wanted to do.
Next, Jason asks Robert if he sees parallels to the US now and prior to the 1929 stock market crash and ensuing Great Depression since he wrote a book about the Great Depression of 1929 and the New Deal.
Robert says the 2008 crash resembled the 1929 crash and the roaring 20s were similar to the housing bubble of the 2000s prior to the 2008 crash.
Robert then talks about how the history books have Herbert Hoover incorrect labeled as a proponent of the free market when in fact he was a massive interventionist.
To wrap up the interview, Jason and Robert talk about how Wall St and Keynesians don't count asset price inflation as inflation while Austrians do and why Keynesians hate saving and deflation so much.

Herbert Hoover's economic policies helped to cause the Great Depression. John McCain has been promising exactly the same kind of failed policies.
A Hands Off Ideology
Due To A Shared Hands Off Ideology, Both Bush & Hoover Refused To Act To Avert Economic Crises. According to a report published by the Center for American Progress, A deteriorating economy under Hoover and now under Bush is due in large part to a lack of action by both presidents. In both cases, their refusal to act was motivated by a hands-off economic ideology and an unconditioned faith in the power of the market to self-correct. [Center for American Progress, 6/5/08]
* McCain: It Is Not The Duty Of Government To Bail Out And Reward Those Who Act Irresponsibly. [McCain Remarks via States News Service, 3/25/08]
Voluntary Solutions
Both Bush & Hoover Relied On Voluntary, Market-Based Solutions To Solve The Crisis. Both voluntary efforts were unsuccessful, largely because Hoover refused to mandate compliance . [Center for American Progress, 6/5/08]
* McCain Proposed A Voluntary Solution Of His Own. During a speech on the housing crisis, John McCain proposed, We should also convene a meeting of the nations top mortgage lenders. Working together, they should pledge to provide maximum support and help to their cash-strapped, but credit worthy customers. [McCain Remarks via States News Service, 3/25/08]
Slow Response To A Housing Crisis
According to a report published by the Center for American Progress, Under both presidents, housing foreclosures rose rapidly—even more rapidly under Bush than Hoover. [Center for American Progress, 6/5/08]
* February 2008: McCain Said Housing Crisis Was Not Yet Bad Enough To Warrant Intervention. During an interview on ABCs This Week, George Stephanopoulos asked Senator McCain if it was a good idea to establish a government fund to help borrowers who are facing foreclosure on their homes. McCain said, I dont think so yet. [ABC, This Week, 2/17/08, emphasis added]
Economic Policies Favoring The Wealthy
CAP: Income Inequality In The Bush Years Has Grown To Levels Above Even Those During The Depression Era. [Center for American Progress, 6/5/08]
* McCains Tax Plan Delivers 58% of The Benefits To The Top 1% of Tax Payers. According to the Center for American Progress, [T]he McCain plan would predominantly benefit the most fortunate taxpayers, offering two new massive tax cuts for corporations and delivering 58 percent of its benefits to the top 1 percent of taxpayers. [Center for American Progress, 3/21/08]
Opposition To Unemployment Assistance
Hoover Vetoed The Garner-Wagner Relief Bill That Would Provide Unemployment Assistance To The States. [Center for American Progress, 6/5/08]
* McCain Refused To Support Stimulus Bill Including Jobless Benefits. On February 6, 2008, McCain skipped a vote that would have bolstered the economic stimulus package to offer additional help for American families and businesses. [CQ Today, 2/6/08]
* Hoover Said He Intensely Regretted The Pork Barrel Characteristics Of The Unemployment Bill. In a speech regarding the Garner-Wagner, President Hoover said, Any study of many of these public works provisions will indicate plainly their pork-barrel characteristics. A large part of the expenditures proposed are wasteful in the present times. They impose tremendous future costs on the people for maintenance; they are not economically needed. [Hoover Speech via UCSB, 6/24/32]
McCains Attacks On Obama Mirror Hoovers Attacks On FDR
While speaking about FDR at Madison Square Garden in 1932, President Herbert Hoover said, We are told by the opposition that we must have a change, that we must have a new deal It is not the change that comes from normal development of national life to which I object, or you object, but the proposal to alter the whole foundations of our national life ... [Encyclopedia Britannica, accessed 10/13/08; Audio via Michigan State University, accessed 10/13/08; emphasis added]
* McCain: The Wrong Change Looks Not To The Future But To The Past Thats Not Change We Can Believe In. During a speech in Louisiana, John McCain said, The wrong change looks not to the future but to the past for solutions that have failed us before and will surely fail us again. [...] That attitude created the unresponsive bureaucracies of big government in the first place. And thats not change we can believe in. [New York sun, 6/3/08]
