Scotch may refer to:
Scotch (adjective) is a largely obsolescent adjective meaning having to do with Scotland and usually now considered pejorative (unless related to food or drink). There remain, however, places and situations where it is still used in a non-pejorative sense, such as in Southern Ontario, Canada. The terms Scottish, Scot, Scots, and Scotch are all variants of the same word. They have had different histories, however, and in modern English they have developed different uses and connotations. The normal everyday words used to mean "of or relating to Scotland or its people" are Scottish - as in Scottish people; Scottish hills; Scottish Gaelic; or "she is English, not Scottish" - or sometimes Scots, as in "that thing is Scots". The normal, neutral word for "a person from Scotland" is Scot, along with Scotsman, Scotswoman, and the plural form the Scots (or the Scottish). "Scotch" nowadays seldom refers to a native of Scotland, though John Kenneth Galbraith considered The Scotch, his memoir of growing up in Canada, "his finest piece of writing": his London publisher had insisted on changing the title for the British edition. Tommy Douglas, no southern Ontarian but from Scotland, arriving in the Canadian province of Manitoba at age 14 in 1918 and in an online vote conducted by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) in 2004 was voted the "Greatest Canadian." referred to himself as "Scotch."
