Amtrak SW Chief Raton Pass
This video takes a look at I-25 southbound through Raton Pass between Trinidad, CO. and Raton, NM. Granted it's not quite as scenic as I-70 on the Rockies or I-80 in the Sierras, but this road still has nice views (that the camera can't quite capture).
When we say Warbonnets, we mean Santa Fe! Take a look at these high-tech red and silver Warbonnets in action - and theres no better place to do so than the challenging prairies and mountain passes of the Southern Colorado and New Mexico desert. The rugged passes of Raton and Glorieta are a test of strength and power for the "super fleet" diesels which pull both freight and modern Amtrak trains on this the busy line.
One of the coolest, albeit longest day of the 4 day trip with Chuck and Evan was our adventure to Colorado and New Mexico to chase Amtrak’s westbound Southwest Chief over the famed Raton Pass. This trip had been an idea of mine to do this year, so we worked it into our trip plans. We left Amarillo at 5:20 AM and arrived in Trinidad, CO around 7:30 AM. A check of Amtrak’s smart phone app showed the train being 1 hr and 45 minutes late arriving in Trinidad around 11:40 MT. We used our free time to scout for locations between Raton and Trinidad. We finally got word the train would soon arrive when a Welder seeking track and time from the DS asked where train 3 was, DS told him he would be by soon, so we set up on the east side of the Trinidad platform. Amtrak 3, Southwest Chief (Passenger:...
In the spring of 2003, BNSF was still regularly running freight over Raton Pass. I managed to catch a southbound (railroad west) with manned helpers climbing the 3% grade over the pass. A chase ensued from just south of Trinidad, Colorado to Watrous, NM, a distance of more than 100 miles. Along the way we caught the eastbound Southwest Chief passing a set of semaphores near Wagon Mound.

Trip to Colorado from Raton, NM to Trinidad, CO 2016. Ratón Pass (7834 feet or 2388 meters elevation) is a mountain pass on the Santa Fe Trail along the Colorado-New Mexico border in the United States. Raton Pass is a federally designated National Historic Landmark. Ratón is Spanish for "mouse." The pass is located on the eastern side of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains between Trinidad, Colorado and Raton, New Mexico, approximately 100 miles (160 km) northeast of Santa Fe. The pass crosses the line of volcanic mesas that extends east from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains along the state line, and furnishes the most direct land route between the valley of the Arkansas River to the north and the upper valley of the Canadian River, leading to Santa Fe, to the south.
Covered this song 'cause I love it and we live not so far from Raton. On the border between New Mexico and Colorado. Raton Pass is a beautiful piece of geography. :-) Ron Your video work deserves remuneration. I'm with ScaleLab myself. Get paid for ads that run on your vids. This drive was 5 June 2016, on our way from Steve Earle show in Pueblo to Steve Earle show in Taos, with stops at the Ludlow Massacre Monument and in Trinidad. I met the late great Townes Van Zandt in Crested Butte in the early 1970s, saw him perform various places in Colorado in 1970s, at McCabes in Santa Monica in 1980s, and The Ark in Ann Arbor in 1990s. I cannot count the innumerable times I commuted at Christmas time or moved--most notably in Summer 1978, pulling a U-Haul trailer with a Chevy Vega, Pueblo to LA--over Raton Pass.
Northeastern New Mexico is home to the last working semaphore signals on a mainline in the United States. Over the past year, I have been lucky enough to visit the Raton and Glorieta Subdivisions 2 times, and witness these rare signals, some of which have been replaced since last year. Once owned by the Santa Fe Railroad, this line is now owned by BNSF, and unfortunately no longer has freight traffic running over it. Thankfully, Amtrak's Southwest Chief still uses the line daily on it's run from Los Angeles to Chicago and back, using trains #3 and #4. These semaphores are slowly being phased out, as time progresses. Last year, the signals at Watrous were replaced, just a few months after I visited them. The line is also undergoing some needed upgrades in the coming months, with track r...

Raton Pass Remakes
Actually, this footage is from mid-April 1995 showing snow scenes on the Arizona Divide west of Flagstaff and Raton Pass in New Mexico/Colorado. This was when Warbonnets were red and said Santa Fe and freights still ran on the old main line over Raton Pass.
Chicago to Albuquerque, April 27-28, 2015. Leaving Chicago, crossing the Mississippi, great footage of Southern Colorado, Raton Pass, and Northern New Mexico
Santa Fe's old main line across Kansas, Colorado and New Mexico in 1995-96. There were still a number of through freights running as well as Amtrak's Southwest Chief and the York Canyon coal trains. At the time, semaphores were extant from La Junta-Trinidad and Raton to just north of Albuquerque. There were also a number of crossings with pedestal mounted wig-wag signals. At the south end of Wagon Mound siding, a wig-wag and semaphore stood side by side. Also shown is a brief side trip on the La Junta-Pueblo line, and an SP train which I assume was a detour move as it picked up a Santa Fe leader to work east of La Junta in ATS territory.
This section of my trip with my friend takes us across Sangre De Cristo Mountains, the southern most range of the Rockies, through southeastern Colorado and into New Mexico. This section of the route most notably features Raton Pass, west of Trinidad, Colorado, Wagon Mound, Glorietta Pass, and some of the last semaphore signals on a Class I railroad. Between La Junta and Alburquerque, the "Southwest Chief" makes stops in Trinidad, CO, Raton, NM, Las Vegas, NM, and Lamy, NM.
Video compilation of my various times on or around the Intracoastal Waterway in south Florida. The Intracoastal is a channel of water that runs parallel to the ocean, separated by the A1A. In order to get to the ocean you have to pass over the Intracoastal via various drawbridges that open at designated times. So in the same way that encountering TriRails, Amtraks and freight trains is a regular part of life in this region, so is the Intracoastal and the bridges. :) A large portion of the video was taken while riding the Fort Lauderdale water taxi on a couple of occasions, which begins in downtown on the New River, before eventually connecting up to the Intracoastal. There are three main types of water taxi boats used - the smallest, which holds about 15 people, the mid size wh...
Come along with us as we climb aboard Amtrak’s Southwest Chief for an amazing, 3-day adventure across America. Beginning in Chicago, Illinois, our train will take us over 2,200 miles to Los Angeles, California, on the former route of Santa Fe’s Super Chief streamliner. From Illinois farm country, transitioning to Kansas prairie, we thunder across Colorado, and head over the Rocky Mountains on the steep grades of Raton Pass. Then it’s down through New Mexico on scenic tracks that today are only used by Amtrak. Seemingly frozen in time are relics from Santa Fe’s heyday, including semaphore signals and long stretches of jointed rail, as we pass the historic landmarks of Wagon Mound, Glorieta Pass, and Apache Canyon. Soon we make it to California, running over Cajon Pass before making our gran...
